1936-37
ANNUAL FRUIT AND VEGETABLE REPORT
STATE MARKETING BUREAU
By Frank Scruggs, Market News Specialist
Florida has a fruit and vegetable industry with a fixed investment
exceeding $500,000,000 while more than ,50,000,000 is invested annually
in producing and marketing the crops. More than 600,000 acres are
utilized and more than 150,000 people are employed full or part time
in this important industry. Florida has an area of 35,000,000 acres of
which only 2,750,000 are in cultivation which allows for the future
increase in the production of fruits and vegetables as well as for
other agricultural commodities.
1936-37 SEASON
The past season was unusual and quite remarkable in several re-
spects. First we were faced with the largest citrus crop in the
history of Florida, exceeding 40,000,000 boxes for the first time.
Secondly some of the vegetable, strawberry, and melon acreage was ro-
peatedly set-back by either excessive rains, frost, or cold winds. In
spite of the largo citrus crop and the abnormal growing conditions the
growers ended the season with more than average success and far more
success than generally expected.
Approximately 163,000 carloads of fruits and vegetables were
harv.stod with a gross Florida value, of nearly $108,000,000.
Comparison with other Seasons.
The total fruit and vegetable volume for 19:56-37 season was the
heaviest on record exceeding the average of the prior 5 years by
31,827 carloads or 19 percent. The only year which has approached the
past season in volume was in 1930-31 when approximately 150,000
carloads were harvested.
The total gross crop value for 1936-37 season harvest was
$107,929,514 while the average for prior 5 years was $74,616,565. The
heaviest gross crop value prior to 1936-37 was in 1930-31 when the
estimated gross value amounted to fb7,050,000, showing that the past
season was the heaviest on record by more than ;20,000,000.
CITRUS IN 1936-37
The total volume of all citrus utilized during the 1936-37 season
amounted to an estimated 102,827 carloads with an estimated gross value
of $68,838,758 and an estimated net value of $24,579,298 after deduct-
ing production and marketing costs, but before deducting for interest,
depreciation, and taxes.
Rail and boat citrus shipments had a gross fob Florida box value
of $2.04 and a net value of 75$. Oranges had a gross of $2.50 and a
net of $:1.15; and grapefruit a gross of $1.48 and a net of 35$.
Tangerines had a gross of 1p.45 and a net loss of 20$ per box.
Comparison with other Seasons.
The 1936-37 citrus season with a total volume of 102,827 carloads
or 40,601,208 exceeded the prior 5 year average of 75,501 carloads or
28,886,000 boxes by 40 percent. The record volume prior to 1936-37 was
in 1930-31 when an estimated 35,004,971 boxes wore utilized. Gross
crop value was 113,000,000 more than for any previous season. Gross
return of 22.04 per box for 1936-37 season was 3$ less than the average
for the past 10 years but the net value per box of 75$ was 20e above
the average for same period. Lower marketing cost increased the net.

Pagi. 2
Several factors were instrumental in making the final result; of
1936-37 citrus seasons far more successful than anticipated.
The total orange crop in thu United States appeared very large
until a severe freeze in California in January cut her mid-winter and
early spring shipments domw to a point where Florida's crop could be
moved et a price satisfactory to most of the growers of this State.
The total grapefruit supply was affected, but to a lesser extent,
by the January freezes in Arizona and California. Another factor
which helped the grapcfruit situation was the national advertising cam-
paign sponsored by the Florida Citrus Cormission; the GovcrronLnt pur-
chase of more than 900,000 boxes for relief'purposes; the record
cannery output, the sales promotion in cooperation with the chain stores
the market activities of the Florida Citrus Control Committco, and at
the close of the season, the lateness of competing crops.
VEGETABLES, STRAWBERRIES, AND MELONS IN 1936-37
The 1936-37 volume of these commodities shipped canned and locally
consumed is estimated as equivalent to 60,118 carloads with a gtoss
Florida fob car or truck value of $39,090,756.
Rail and boat shipments amounted to 42,298 carloads with a gross
value of $30,700,206 or an average of $726 per carload.
Comparison with other Years.
The 1936-37 Florida gross fob value of vegetables, strawberries, and
melons h-rvestcd was $39,090,756 as compared to prior 5 year average
of 'I31,80b,297 and almost C5,000,000 more than recent best years. The
1936-37 volume of 60,118 carloads compared most favorably with the 5
year average of 55,622 carloads harvested for-all purposes.
1936-37 rail and boat shipments of 42,298 carloads were slightly
above the average of 42,086 carloads for the prior 5 years.
Beans in 1936-37
The total volume of 8,389 carloads had an estinlated gross Florida
fob value of $6,705,177. The total acreage was estimated at 61,000
acres which was approximately the same as for the prior season and
above the average for 5 years. Palm Beach County accounted for 36,800
acres, 'roward for 14,000, thu remainder widely scattered throughout
the State. The growing season in South Florida was marked by several
damaging frosts and rains.
Cabbage in 1936-37
Production in Florida was equivalent to 3,214 carloads with a gross
fob Florida value of $921,237.
Cabbage acreage of 8,500 in 1936-37 was 500 loss than ho year
before but approximately 1,500 more than the average for the 5 previous
years. Palm Beach led with 1,500, mliuber next with 1,0000,. T"- .,e c0,
and the remaining acreage was widely scattered, principally in i'-ri.,
. ,,rcteo,Alachua, Polk, Seminole, Hillsborough, Lake, Flaglor, Okeecho-
bee, and Hendry Counties. The yield was'quite spotted due to bad
weather. Prices were low principally because of liberal supply in
Texas, and other States. South Carolina, North Carolina, and Virginia
enjoyed a more open winter than usual and had more cabbage than
customary.
Celery in 1936-37
Florida produced a total of 10,195 carl-ads of celery with a
Florida fob gross value of $6,095,300,
The 1936-37 acreage was 7,500, as compared to 6,500 acres for prior
year and was, according to available records, the largest acreage ever
planted. The yield as well as the market'was spotted.
Page 3
Seminole County led with 3,650, Sarasota next with 1,400, and the
remaining celery acreage was found principally in Manatee, Palm Beach,
and Marion Counties. The rail and boat shipments of 9,090 carloads
have been exceeded once in 1927-28 and again in 1929-30. On the other
hand the volume trucked out is approximately 600 cars more than then
when there was very little movement by truck.
Peppers in 1936-37
The volume harvested, excluding that which went out in mixed cars,
was 2,311 carloads with a Florida gross value of $1,645,488, both
volume and value being about average. Acreage of 7,200 was 700 above
1935-36 season but was about the average for prior 5 years. Broward
County led with 1,700 acres, Hillsborough'noxt with 750, Manatee with
500, and the remainder widely scattered but principally in Sumter, Lee,
Hardee, Alachua, and Orange Counties.
Potatoes in 1936-37
Total production was 8,095 carloads with a gross value of
J5,184,360, the volume being considerably above the 5 year average of
4,907 carloads. The value per carload was slightly above average.
Growing conditions were some better than the average of recent years.
Potato acreage of 31,300 was also much heavier than the 22,000 acreage
for prior 5 years. St. Johns County reported 7,000, Putnam 3,500,
Flaglor 3,000, Dade 3,000, with the remaining acreage principally in
Alachua, Lee, Volusia, Escambia, and Palin Beach Counties.
Tomatoes in 1936-37
This was the leading vegetable in gross value to Florida and was
exceeded in volume only by celery. Tomato volume was estimated at
8,530 carloads, including trucked out, consumed, and canned, with a
Florida gross value of $7,220,750. The volume was 400 carloads loss
than the average for prior 5 years. The gross value per car for rail
and boat shipments was estimated at $1,025 approximately the same as
in 1935-36 but considerable above the $822 average for previous 5 years.
Total tomato acreage for the. State was 32 500 or about 600 acres
more than the average of recent years. Dade County led with 10,900,
Collier next with 2,800, Broward 2,500, Manatee 2,350, Palm Beach 2,000,
and the remainder confined principally to Sumter, Marion, Hillsborough,
Hardoe, Loo, St. Lucio, and Indian River Counties. The yield was very
spotted due to excessive cold, winds, or rain in most of the winter
and early spring sections.
Other Vegetables in 1936-37
Cucumber production was only 869 carloads with gross value of
$893,216. Acreage, volume, and value was average. State acreage was
5,600, Hardeo leading with 900, Alachua next with 650, Sumtcr 500, the
remainder scattered but principally in Loo, Levy, and Manatee Counties.
Eggplant volume not including. portion shipped in mixed cars was
540 carloads with a gross value of '294,720, slightly above average.
Acreage was 1,350 and considerably below average. Principal areas of
production were Loc, Manatoo, Hornando, Broward, Hardoe and Hills-
borough Counties.
Lettuce volume not including portion in mixed cars was estimated
at 521 carloads with gross Florida value of $220,450. Acreage of 900
was about average. Volume and prices wore slightly above average.
Principal areas of production wore Manatee, Seminole, Marion, Orange,
and Sumter Counties.
Green Pea volume of 674 carloads had a gross value of 427,832,
which was considerably below 1935-36 duo to smaller acreage and
unfavorable growing conditions. Acreage of 6,200 was well above the 5
year average, Palm Bench loading with 4,000 and remainder widely
scattered.
Miscellancous and Mixcd Veectables showed a total volume of 8,547
With a gross Florida value of '4,837,392, slightly above average for
recent years. Corn, carrots, cruliflower, escarole, greens, onions,
booet, turnips, and sweet potatoes are included with other commodities
commonly shipped in mixed cars.
Strawberries in 1936-37
Total volume of 1,953 c leadss had a gross value of $3,220,117,the
volume being slightly less than average but the gross value slightly
higher. Acreage of 8,800 showed Hillsborough with 4,000, Polk 1,400,
Bradford 1,050, Herdeo 950 with most of remainder in Manatee and
Sumtcr Counties.
Watermelons" in 1956-37
The volume of 5,698 carloads had a gross Florida fob car or truck
value 6f$1,179,352, the volume being rvorage but well above the aver-
age in gross value per carload. An acreage of 19,500 was widely
scattered but located principally in Alachua, Lake, Suwannoo, Marion,
Gilchrist, Jackson., and Madison Counties.
Miscellaneous Comments
The movement by truck increased considerably during the 1936-37
season, more than 75 percent of this volume going to Southeastern
States including Tennessee, Kentucky; Virginia, and 'oest Virginia.
Rail movement gained some due principally to lower rates to areas
affected by truck and boat transportation.
Boat movement was relatively lower but the 1936-37 volume was
more, due to heavier total crop volume. Leading shipping ports were
Jacksonville, Ft. Pierce, Tampa, and Miami.
Comprehensive tabulations have been prepared this season for the
first time showing detailed citrus data for 10 years for oranges,
grapefruit and tangerines separately. See pages 10-13 inclusive.
Acreage figures by counties and commodities are for the first time
show-. in the 1936-37 report. Obviously there is ample opportunity for
an estimator, however careful, to make errors in estimating miscellan-
eous acreages in the less important counties. It is difficult enough
to get accurate reports and estimates even in the more concentrated
areas. It is believed that the acroeaG estimates will satisfy the
frequent and consistent demand for same. Sec pages 30-36 inclusive.
Citrus fruit inspections by counties is a new feature of this
1936-37 report. These inspections are compulsory by State law but
apply only to commercial shipments. Grapefruit to the extent of
926,976 boxes used for relief purposes and 7,305,512 boxes of grape
fruit and oranges used for canneries did not require State inspection.
Additional quantities of oran es grapefruit and tangerines locally
consumed were not inspected. The foregoini inspection figures repre-
sent tabulations as reported by State inspectors at the respective
packing houses in the various counties. It may be noted that citrus
might be packed in one county and loaded in another county, and it is
possible for citrus to be picked in one county, packed in another, and
loaded for shipments in still another county.
Pago 5
It should also be noted that considerable citrus is shipped to
port in bulk and packed at port as well as inspected there. This is
especially true for Duval, St. Lucio, and Hillsborough Counties.
Citrus -fruit inspected at Florida ports for 1936-37 season through
June 30; standardbox equivalent was:

Miami '155 1,638 1,793
Total 5,45',894 3,141,847 775,740 9,375,481
From the above it appears that Ft. Pierce is making rar3d strides
as a chipping port for in past seasons boat shipments were confined
principally to. Jacksonville and Tampa. All of the above tonnage went
into domestic or coastwise trade. Direct exports from Florida to
European countries are inconsequential at present, having'dec.rased in
recent years. Mos.t'of Floridas exports no-, move out of ilew York. Re-
gular but small weekly shipments move out of Miami to the West Indies.
Primary boat destinations of oranges, grapefruit and tangerines are
shovn on page 39. Those destinations have boon grouped by' geographical
area. New York State was credited with 15,866 carloads of 400 boxes,
which was'68-porcent of the total citrus. Massachusetts was second
with 2,771, and Pennsylvania third with 2,724, Connecticutt with 640,
Maryland with 567; and the small remainder widely s catterod'. Oranges
accounted for approximately 59, grapefruit 33, and tangerines 8 percent
of total 23,315 carloads reported. See pages 10-13.
Int rat-atb truck distribution of oranges, grapefruit and tangerines
i.s shown on page 39. It 'All be seen that 1,520 carloads of 400 boxes,
or approximately 18 percent of total moved to Washington and points
beyond. The principal trucking area, namely the Southeastern States
including 'lest Virginia, Virginia, Tennessee and Kentucky, accounted
for 78 percent of the total 8,549 carloads of citrus movrig out by
truck. The remaining 356 carloads or 4 percent worc.widely scattered.
Georgia was the best customer with 2,347 carloads, Virginia next with
1,180, followed by North Carolina, District of Columbia,South Carolina,
Alabama, Tennessee and Maryland. The remainder was widely scattered.
Although there are no complete figures to prove it, it is believe that
truck shipments of vegetables moved to the same general areas as citrus
and in the same relative volume.
On page 40 will be found a tabulation showing unloads of certain
Florida commodities in 66 markets for the calendar year 1036. Those
markets arc not the 66 largest in the United States but include most of
them. One important Florida commodity, snap beans, is riot included for
the reason that the unload figures were not readily available at time
this tabulation was prepared. Some other commodities of less import-
ance were omitted for lack of space. The total for these specified
commodities in those marcots was 66,707 carloads by rail and boat.
Washington and other Eastern cities named accounted for almost 74 ,por
cent of the total. North Central and Middle Wostcrn markets accounted
for most of the remainder. Tho tabulation on page 41 'is the same as
on page 40 except that it shows the unloads originating in all States
rather than Florida dnly.
Population by States, by areas, and by important markets is shoe,,
on page 42. This tabulation may be studied along with those on the
previous five pages.
Any inquiries relative to the matter contained in this report will
by welcome. A County Shipment'Supplcracnt nay be obtained on request.
