Notes

Abstract:
This purpose of this study is to find out whether Pokémon cards are effective tools for improving student engagement and basic skills in mathematics. The implementation of the Pokémon activities took place at a nonprofit afterschool program with pre-service elementary teacher mentors and 2nd and 3rd grade elementary students. The pre-service elementary teacher mentors facilitated pre-made Pokémon activities with the elementary students. The activities were designed to improve students’ procedural fluency in mastering number combinations. The purpose of this study was to investigate if Pokémon cards are an engaging mathematics tool and what mathematical concepts the Pokémon cards reinforce. Based on data collected from the study, the findings suggest that Pokémon cards can be an effective intervention tool for students.
