Notes
- Abstract:
- From the second century onward, the church has traditionally interpreted Psalm 24 as anticipatory of Christ's ascension; however, modern scholarship rarely values this interpretation enough to give it a fair hearing. If scholars choose to examine it in light of patristic and biblical evidence, would they find that this interpretation actually holds weight? The first step toward answering this question is to identify and summarize the church's historical interpretation of the psalm. The second step is to analyze psalm’s text in light of its historical context, vocabulary, grammar, syntax, and canonical context, in order to conclude if the church's interpretation is justifiable. The final step is to determine from the New Testament if the early church had any precedent that would have led them to develop such an interpretation. In answering these questions, this paper seeks to engage and evaluate the church's traditional interpretation of Psalm 24 as the serious, historical claim its proponents intended it to be.
