ST. PETE BEACH Gulfport Mayor
Mike Yakes appeared before the St.
Pete Beach City Commission at their
Tuesday meeting, and, on behalf
of the Suncoast League of Cities,
urged the commission to join him in
Tallahassee. The purpose of Yakes'
trip is to ask the state legislature
to oppose offshore drilling. Yakes
said that he has hosted community
discussions on the merits and
drawbacks of offshore drilling,
though he strongly opposes it. "This
land belongs to all of us and we need
to do our part," he said. The trip
takes place February 17, and is open
only to members of the league.

A Goal and a Plan
"This is not a diet program," Nan Jensen, a registered and licensed dietitian
with the Pinellas County Cooperative Extension Service, told the small group
gathered at the Gulfport Multipurpose Senior Center. "We're not going to put
you on a diet."
The group was meeting for the first of six weekly meetings, and their goal was
simple: to control their weight.
"I've always had a weight issue," a woman named Marlene said. "I'm 65 years
old, 5'7", and weigh 280 pounds. I have high blood pressure and I don't want to
take pills anymore."
Jensen asked the participants to set a goal the first week. She encouraged them
to set small and measurable goals, such as walking up a flight of stairs, instead
of wide, sweeping goals, like working out five days a week.
Marlene set a goal to exercise three times a week at the YMCA's low-impact
water aerobics class. She's also started keeping a food journal. In three weeks
she's lost 9 12 pounds.
"I'm happy. I'm really enjoying it. I understand it's a lifestyle change and not
a diet," she said.
Another class member, Jo Ann, said she'd start spending 30 minutes three
times a week on an exercise bike, start eating breakfast, and eat a lighter
evening meal.
A third member, Scott, wants to gain weight. At 5'7", he only weighs 148 pounds.
His goal? He wants to try and remember to eat three times a day.
Every week, Jensen makes a healthy lunch for the class members. The class
has three weeks to go; it is free.

City Examines Potential
Revenue Sources
ST. PETE BEACH With
municipalities virtually all
governing bodies, really, feeling
the squeeze on their budgets in the
face of declining revenue sources,
many are looking for create ways to
enhance their coffers. Tuesday the
City of St. Pete Beach called on Ken
Small of the Florida League of Cities,
who presented a municipal revenue
overview before the commission.
Small pointed out areas where the
city was not maximizing its potential
revenue namely through millage
rates and the communication services
tax.
But the commission's major
concern appeared to be the perceived
imbalance between what the city
contributes to the county's "bed tax"
23 percent of the total sum, and
what it gets back.
"It just is surprising to me that we
can't get what some consider our fair
sharer back," said Commissioner
Christopher Leonard.
Small said that, due to the hospitality
industry lobby's clout in Tallahassee,
among other things, getting the state
legislature to listen to municipal
governments on the matter may be a
challenge.
"I don't think we've had a ground
swell big enough to get the legislature
to pay attention," Small said.

to stage their own March for Life
weekend, enjoining the Dioceses of
St. Petersburg and Orlando to bring
their youth groups to Gulfport and
participate in celebration of Life as
well.
"The kids decided they wanted
to be heard," Lockamy said. "They
really wanted to be included in the
March in Washington, but opted to
have their own March here."
The kids had a "lock in" Thursday
night at the Maria Center and
Youth Ministry, with parents
and volunteers bringing in air
mattresses and bedding for the
overnight adventure. The girls
occupied one part of the building and
the boys were upstairs in another
area. Friday morning was spent
setting up the Maria Center and the
Church for the rally and dinner that
would follow Friday night's march
down 58th Street to Gulfport Beach.
There they formed a prayer circle
and celebration before returning
to the church grounds. The City of
Gulfport provided police protection
for the demonstrators along the
way.
"The City was great, very helpful
to us," said Lockamy. "We had no

problem obtaining all of the necessary
permits for the event." Lockamy also
added that they plan to make this an
annual event at Most Holy Name, to
coincide with the National March for
Life held in Washington, D.C.
After the march, the more than 300
kids andvolunteerswere treatedto the
music of John Angotti, a nationally-
known Christian singer who was in
town for another performance. Spirit
FM was a sponsor as well and had
announced the march on the air.
The Catholic religion believes
that life begins at conception, that
abortion is wrong and that every
child, no matter how small, born or
unborn, is a child of God.

MOU Gives Suntan
Arts Center More
Control Over Facility
ST. PETE BEACH The City
Commission voted 4-1 to enter into
a memorandum of understanding
between the city and the Suntan Arts
Center, housed in the Don Vista, a
city building. The understanding
adds to an MOU enacted last year
that gave the center control over
its own staffing. This year's MOU
gives the arts center a greater role


in maintaining the facility through
pest control, cleaning, minor
maintenance, and electric and
water utilities. According to a report
prepared by Public Services Director
Stephen Hallock, the move can
potentially save the city more than
$116,000 annually. The city will
continue to cover costs associated
with maintaining the building's
mechanical, electrical, and plumbing
systems as well as trash pickup.
Commissioner Christopher Leonard,
who represents the District 2 (in


which the Don Vista stands), cast
the only dissenting vote.

Floridiana Festival
at Gulfport Casino
The 9th edition of the "Floridiana
Festival & Highwaymen Artist Show"
returns to the Casino this Saturday,
January 30, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Celebrating Florida's cultural and
tourism legacies, visitors to the show
will find an abundance of old roadside
attraction kitsch for sale, as well as
vintage Florida art and old tropical
decor.
With a range of everything from
old alligator ashtrays and flamingo
figurines, to postcards and other fun
ephemera from the Sunshine State's
old parks and hotels, the show
brings together premier exhibitors
and collectors of Floridiana. Serious
collectors will enjoy the selection of
citrus and cigar box labels, carved
alligator canes, and souvenir sterling
silver spoons and hotel china from
Florida's "golden age of souvenirs,"
while more casual collectors of
kitsch can find postcards of bathing
beauties, alligator purses and other
Florida fashion, including vintage
Aloha shirts.


A special feature is the chance
to meet the Florida Highwaymen
artists, who will be selling their
beautiful Florida sea and landscape
paintings. Artists participating this
year include Highwaymen James
Gibson, Issac Knight, Robert Lewis,
Willie Reagan, Roy McLendon, Sr.,
and Curtis Arnett, plus artists Roy
McLendon, Jr., and Jimmy and
Johnny Stoval. Some exhibitors
will also have vintage Florida
Highwaymen paintings for sale.
There will be free valuations of old
Florida art as well, so bring your
vintage Florida paintings to the show
for a professional valuation as to age
and worth.
Several Florida authors will be on
hand, including Lu Vickers, author of
"Weeki Wachee: City of Mermaids;"
Larry Roberts, author of "Florida's
Golden Age of Souvenirs: 1890-1930";
Wayne Ayers, author of several

Dear Editor: Re: "Gulfport: The Musical" Look out Broadway! Thank you,
thank you, thank you...to each and everyone who brought is amazing, historical,
emotional, enjoyably entertaining and community-bonding 100th Ii'lhl.y
Present" to our city of Gulfport.
Based on Lynne Brown's Gulfport History Book and musically composed
with lyrics and re-writing by the extremely talented Gil Perlroth, the play was
astoundingly directed by Daniel Harris. The music was phenomenally directed
by Bill Bryant. Each individual cast member was obviously extremely talented
and dedicated to our community. The musicians, back stage personnel, lighting
crew, the Historical Museum's old photos DVD, the set artists and sound techs...
everyone involved deserves acknowledgement, gratitude and an award for such
professionalism, dedication and loving commitment.
"Gulfport: The Musical" is fantastically presented with an unprecedented sense
of community association; bonding and sincere sense of neighborly "place".
"Gulfport: The Musical" truly reaffirms that "There's no place like home!".

The Suncoasters of St. Petersburg
are now accepting registration forms
for the 2010 Festival of States Clown
Alley Clown School sponsored by All
Children's Hospital.
This popular program has been a
tradition of the Festival of States
since 1972. Christine Davison, a
graduate of the famed Ringling Bros.
Barnum & Bailey Clown School,
teaches character definition, make-
up, costuming and performance
techniques during the five week
series.
Both children and adults are
welcome to participate and all
graduates will be invited to show
off their new skills in the Festival
of States Iluminated Night Parade
on Thursday, March 25 and the
Festival Day Parade on Saturday,
April 10.
The five classes will be held on

Senior Center Food Drive
Town Shores of Gulfport declared the month of February "Give with Love Month"
to kick off their food drive for the Senior Center. All residents are encouraged
to donate can goods/dry goods for the food drive. Each of the 18 buildings has
appointed an Angel of Love to collect food and monetary donations for the drive.
Association Manager Gregg Fata helping with the drive stated that "The Senior
Center does so much to help some of our residents and many others in Gulfport.
We are so excited about the food drive and we believe it will be a huge success.
Our residents are such giving people; they volunteer all over the city, schools and
the Chamber. You name a need for help, our residents are there to add their help
and support".
The food drive will be for the entire month of February, so check the bulletin
boards and find your Angel of Love representative for any further information

South Pasadena Elections Canceled

SOUTH PASADENA- While 2010 is already shaping up to be a contentious
and harrowing election year at the state and national levels, some
municipalities are not exactly feeling the heat.
This March, South Pasadena was to hold elections to determine who
would occupy two open City Commission seats as well as that of the mayor.
South Pasadena City Clerk Mary Braisted said that one person applied and
qualified for each seat, and that each currently occupies the seat they seek.
Braisted said that all three had been appointed to the commission in June
of last year. Mayor Kathleen Peters, who had been elected to the commission
in 2008, was appointed mayor when then-mayor Dick Holmes resigned for
personal reasons. Commissioner Diane Hauser also resigned at that time
because she moved out of town.
Mickey McMenamin and Arthur Penny were appointed to the seats that
were left vacant.
Braisted said that that this isn't the first time an election was cancelled -
2009 and 2007 also went without a contested election.
She said she wasn't sure why no one is challenging the three seats.
"I can't answer that question," she said. "I have no idea."
And while things might get testy in places like Gulfport, South Pasadena
isn't the only municipality in south Pinellas to see seats go unchallenged.
The two St. Pete Beach City Commission seats that were up this March
went unchallenged, as did two in Treasure Island and two in Madeira
Beach.

good that we are involved and I know
the people over there really need
our help. But the thing is, we need
to concentrate on our own people,
like our troops and our veterans.
We've got many orphans here at
home; children of our troops that
died in the wars and they need just
as much help as the Haitian orphans.
They're not getting the aftercare and
counseling that families need after
the trauma of losing a soldier to the
war. It's commendable that people
want to adopt the Haitian children,
but it almost seems like a fashion
statement. There are a lot of children
right here in the US that desperately
need help and I think we need to
take care of our own. Look at Texas; I
heard it was the first state to send to
send aid to Haiti, yet when Katrina
happened, they turned the hurricane
victims away on the highway and
sent them back to New Orleans, Our
own people! What happened to Haiti
is tragic and I think they deserve
help. But we're missing a lot of
other important issues right here in
America. Every time a global tragedy
hits, America rushes in to help. We
need to start taking care of our own
people, especially the children and the
troops. We need to pull together."

Trip to Ringling
Museum
The Gulfport Historical Society
is planning a trip to the Ringling
Museums on Saturday, January 30.
They will carpool from the Gulfport
Museum at 9-9:30 a.m. Museum
admissions are $25 for adults, $20
for seniors, and is well worth the
price. The newly opened miniature
circus is a fascinating sight, as
well as the circus museum with
painted circus wagons, etc. The art
museum has many treasures. The
home of John and Mable Ringling
is also well worth a visit. Food and
beverages are available on the
grounds.

Centennial Show
and Dance
On February 26, the Gulfport
Historical Society will host a fun
evening at the Gulfport Casino,
"100 Years of Music". The popular
Bobby Tess group will perform.
Reservations can be made for
tables of eight. Individual seating
will be available on a first come-
first serve basis. All tickets are
$15 each. Free snacks, cash bar.
There will be a costume contest;
come dressed in your favorite era.

Bruno is a one year old male Australian Kelpie mix who
came to the SPCA Tampa Bay as a transfer from another
shelter. They liked this guy so much that they thought
they'd send him to us so that he'd have a better chance at

their annual Card and Game Party,

Audition for "The Sting"
Island Community Theatre
announces open auditions for its next
production, "The Sting". Director
Elaine Cloud Goller says there are
numerous roles for all ages and both
genders; at least a dozen each for
male and female, ages teen to senior.
Many actors will enjoy playing
multiple characters.
The story takes place in 1930s
Chicago, in a world of small-time
hustlers and their girls, their money
nonexistent but their ingenuity
abundant. Johnny Hooker (a small-
time grifter played by Robert
Redford in the film) joins a friend
in a successful con of a "runner."
Unfortunately for them, the runner
works for a powerful, vindictive
rackets boss, Doyle Lonnegan, who


is infuriated and arranges the killing
of Johnny's friend. Hoping to avenge
this senseless murder, Johnny enlists
the aid of the master con man Henry
Gondorff (originally played by Paul
Newman). Together they decide to
try the big con called "The Wire."
Auditions begin at 6:30 p.m.
Monday and Tuesday, February 8-9,
at the Island Community Theatre
Rehearsal Hall, located at 286 107

11th Annual Tennis
and Golf Challenge
The 11 lth Annual Tennis and Golf
( l.ill.-n;.- will be held on Saturday,
February 20, at the Treasure Bay Golf
and Tennis complex, located at 10315
Paradise Boulevard in Treasure
Island. This year's proceeds will
benefit the Recreation Programs for
the City of Treasure Island, as well
as Junior Tennis and Golf Programs
at Treasure Bay and the Rotary
Foundation.
The fee is $25 which includes play,
goodie bags, prizes, and raffle. Entry
forms can be picked up at Treasure
Bay, or through the Recreation
Department at Treasure Island City
Hall.
Registration begins at 8 a.m. with
coffee, muffins and juices. Play begins
at 9 a.m. followed by a raffle and silent
auction at 11:30.
There will be a Silent Auction Preview
Party at Treasure Bay on Friday,
February 19, from 6 to 9 p.m. A buffet

Band Salutes Presidents
in Free Concert
The South Pasadena Community
Band announces its February concert
entitled Presidential Salute. The
concert is free to the public and will
be presented Thursday, February 11,
at 7:30 p.m. in the Boca Ciega High
School Auditorium located at 924
58 Street S. in St. Petersburg. The
facility has adequate free parking
and is handicap accessible.
According to Max Millspaugh, the
concert will feature a Lincoln portrait
set to music and a moving Jefferson
portrait with a musical background.
"We will also feature some familiar
marches and a very interesting
Dixieland arrangement that will
include several Dixieland standards,
said Millspaugh. "We are planning
to present some other selections that
will give the audience nice variety
and some interesting, listenable
fare," he concluded.
Mayor Kathleen Peters said that
the community is welcome and that
South Pasadena is pleased to be
part of making the band available
to the entire community. "This is a
community relations initiative that
we have supported in part for over
twentyyears," shecommented. "When
they play the National Anthem or,
as they will on this concert, "Ruffles
and Flourishes" followed by "Hail to
the Chief," I can't help but think of
the pageantry of military bands and
the connection between bands and
the ceremony that has surrounded
every president of our great country.
This will be a very interesting and
inspiring concert," she said.
Parking will be available in
front of the school and adjacent
to the auditorium. Buses will be
accommodated in special parking
area.

Listen up Republicans. Scott
Brown's winning of the
Massachusetts' Senate seat
was not about you. And, it isn't just
about the Obama agenda. It's about
politicians and political behavior,
and that covers both parties. Also, big
media, you can do all the analyzing
you want, but it's way too late. You
missed the story early in the year,
particularly in September of 2009,
and I'm not sure some of you get it
yet.
I was in Washington, D. C. for the
9/12 march and can say, as I did in
a column right afterwards, that the
majority of people who took the time
and effort and money to be there
weren't whacko right wingers, and
weren't funded by any organization.
Most were and are sick and tired
of relentless raids on taxpayers'
pocket books by elitist, professional
politicians who don't seem to be
representing anyone but themselves.
Smirking elitist politicians, pundits
and smug citizens, who ridiculed this
"peoples movement" as tea baggers,


whackos, conspiracists, and worse,
were shocked by the Massachusetts
results. After all, President Obama
commented that Scott Brown was
just a pickup truck owner and anyone
can own a pickup truck. Aren't pickup
truck owners kind of nobodies? Well,
the nobodies apparently did the
voting.
As for the media (Washington Post,
New York Times, Los Angeles Times,
all major networks with the exception
of Fox), I wrote on September 16, "if
big media is ignoring the trend, we'll
see a string of "what a surprise"
stories about events that were right
in front of their noses." That has
happened, and it really is fun to be
right.
However, as I noted at the start
of this column, this isn't about any
one political party. This is about
the people speaking up and turning
out. Yes, there are organizations out
there, but the feeling I get is that
even within those organizations
people are feeling and acting
independently. Consequently,

predict election results.
Politicians trying to ride the populist
wave could get badly damaged.
When the voters get more cynical
than the politicians, unpredictable
things happen. For instance, being
anti-global warming doesn't mean
anti-environment. Nor, does being
pro-environment mean being against
all oil and gas drilling. Anti-illegal
immigration doesn't mean anti-
immigration. Anti-health care
programs as now proposed, doesn't
mean anti-all health care programs.
And, "bringing home the bacon"
could today be considered attempted
bribery. After all, the money (bacon)
being brought back was taken from
my pocket in the first place.
However, I suspect that pro-national
security does mean not giving foreign
terrorists American citizens' rights,
nor condoning outright torture. And,
I don't think voters believe creating
jobs means creating more government
jobs.

comes along. To make it a little bit of a
challenge, we won't publish the correct
caption until the following week.

LAST WEEK'S ANSWER:
The Pasadena Golf Course Apartments,
in the center of last week's picture, were
built in 1969, but the rest of the PYCC
came later. Buildings "A" and "B" were
completed by 1985 and construction on
individual home lots soon followed.

Mardi Gras to Benefit
Kiwanis Charities
TREASURE ISLAND-The Kiwanis
Club of Gulf Beaches, is sponsoring a
Month of Mardi Gras February 6-14.
Saturday, February 6, features a
5K/lMile Run beginning at the clock
tower on Central Avenue to benefit
the Trevor Miller Foundation. A
Mardi Gras Masquerade Ball will
take place at the Gulfport Casino on
Friday, February 12 at 7 p.m. The
Miracle League Poker Run will begin
at 10 a.m. on Saturday, February
13. The Beach Midway on Saturday,
February 13 and Sunday, February
14 will feature over 100 of Florida's
best arts and craft vendors, food, a
Budweiser Tent, live entertainment
and a Kids Zone.
The Kiwanis Club of Gulf Beaches
was the Florida District 2006-07 Club
of the Year. They are involved in
many worthwhile projects including
Ronald McDonald House, Locks
of Love, Every Child a Swimmer,
and K-Kids at Madeira Beach and
Sawgrass Elementary Schools,
Miracle League of Gulf Beaches and
Pinellas Village.
Miracle League of the Gulf Beaches
is a baseball league that plays on
a state-of-the art playing field and
allows children with a variety of
disabilities to participate. There is
one field located in Pinellas County,
the Kiwanis Club of Gulf Beaches is
raising money to build in a second
location and has their eyes on
Hillsborough County.
The Kiwanis Club is currently

Q: You know that one building, kind of purplish-blue, next to the 7-11 on
Gulf Boulevard? The one that housed another one of those one-stop shot
glass, snorkel, and hilarious t-shirt shops? Well, it seems like one day the
building was just gone. I don't recall any demolition crews or anything; it
was just kind of not there anymore one day. What's the deal?

A: The answer is simple, really. While you may lament that the gap-
ing hole at 6255 Gulf Blvd. leaves fully exposed that moustache-glorifying
welcome mural, fear not, as property owner Paul Resop said he plans to
rebuild on the property if he can get two small variances. "The building
was old and needed to be torn down," he said. "The beach as got to grow.
If we're going to be a tourist destination, we've got to modernize." He said
he plans to build a 3,200 square foot structure on the property, though the
tenant is yet to be determined. One variance has to do with parking the
developer wants to put in one less parking space than is required, which
would still be more than what was there. The other variance would reduce
the rear setback to nine feet down from the required 29 feet. Planning Di-
rector Karl Holley said that the back of the property abuts a gravel park-
ing lot, and that reduced setback requests typically run into trouble only
when other structures may potentially be encroached upon. The building
that until recently sat on that property was constructed in the 50s, had
initially served as a hotel, and had been remodeled many times, Holley
said, adding that properties along Gulf Boulevard are uncharacteristically
narrow due the widening of that road. If the variances are granted, the
City Commission then needs to approve it.

Are Trusts Only for
the Super-Rich?
While it is true that you should have
a fair amount of assets before you
consider setting up a trust, a trust is
no longer the province of the "super-
rich."
Simply stated, a trust is a legal
document that makes it possible for
you to put aside some of your money
and direct how it will be used upon
your death or in some form of trust,
while you're alive. A trust may also
ease your tax bite.
A trust generally offers several
advantages: among them, the assets
don't have to go through probate,
which saves time and money.
Additionally, you may be able to
maintain control over the trust assets


while you're alive and capable; sick
and incapable; or as part of an estate
plan at your death.
Many individuals and families have
found that trusts offer a number
of interesting financial planning
opportunities. Even where your
estate plan calls for all the assets of
the first-to-die spouse to pass to the
surviving spouse under the unlimited
marital estate tax deduction,
significant estate tax may be due on
the death of the surviving spouse.
Proper use of carefully drafted non-
marital trusts for the benefit of the
surviving spouse and/or children may
keep these assets out of the surviving
spouse's estate and reduce the overall
tax bite on the estate plan.
So-called "living trusts" have become
very popular with those interested
in avoiding the expense, delay and
publicity of probate; while allowing
the grantor to maintain control over
the trust assets during his or her
lifetime, if capable and competent.

Join Gulf Beaches
Relay for Life
TREASURE ISLAND: The 2010
American Cancer Society Relay
for Life of the Gulf Beaches gets
underway at the Bilmar Beach Resort
on Treasure Island Beach April 16
and 17.
Relay For Life events are held
overnight as teams camp out at
an athletic track, beach, park or
other gathering area, with the
goal of keeping at least one team
member on the track or pathway at
all times throughout the evening.
Teams do most of their fundraising
prior to the event, but also hold
creative fundraisers at their camp
sites during the event. Relay brings
together friends, families, businesses,
hospitals, schools, faith-based groups
. people from all walks of life all
aimed at furthering the American
Cancer Society's efforts to save
lives by helping people stay well,
by helping them get well, by finding
cures and by fighting back.
"Relay is a unique opportunity for
the community to come together to
celebrate people who have battled
cancer, remember those we've lost,
and fight back against the disease,"
said Christine Hartman, Community
Representative of the American
Cancer Society. MN.inii of the
participants are cancer survivors,
which serves as a reminder that the
Gulf Beaches are not immune to this
disease and that by participating
in Relay, we are joining with the
American Cancer Society's efforts
to create a world with less cancer
and more birthdays," Ms Hartman
added.
Funds raised at the Relay for
Life Gulf Beaches are enabling the
American Cancer Society to impact
the lives of those touched by cancer
within the community.
The event kicks off honoring the Gulf
Beaches cancer survivors and their
caregivers followed by a reception.
All survivors and their caregivers are
asked to register for the event as well
and relay team captains and their
team participants.
Relay for Life's Luminaria Ceremony
takes place after sundown, honoring
the community's cancer survivors and
remembering those lost to the disease.
Participants will circle a track that is
surrounded with glowing luminaria

Salzman, explained why this may not
be a Sunshine Law violation.
"There is impropriety and the
appearance of impropriety," Salzman
said. "There's got to be discussion.
You can pass information on," he said,
as long as the elected officials disclose
that discussion in a public forum.
"The Sunshine Law is about making
decisions so that all the information
and decision process is made ...
public," Salzman explained. By
publicly disclosing his interaction with
Henderson, Worthington may have
avoided a Sunshine Law violation
with regards to that interaction.
Henderson stressed that there was
no further discussion. Yakes and
Worthington have not disclosed their
conversations in a public forum.
If this does constitute a violation,
Salzman says, the council would have
to "redo the vote," although council
has yet to vote on this appointment.

Group Weddings on
Valentine's Day
CLEARWATER: Once again,
numerous couples will join together
at the picturesque Florida Botanical
Gardens in Largo for one group
wedding ceremony to be performed
by Clerk of the Circuit Court, Ken
Burke, on Valentine's Day, Sunday,
February 14.
This is the fourth year the Clerk's
Office is hosting this event, which
has become a County tradition. The
Clerk's Office is officially closed on
Sunday, but romance doesn't take
time off, so Burke decided to still
hold the event. Once again the single
ceremony uniting multiple couples in
marriage will be held in the Florida
Botanical Gardens' Wedding Garden.
The one ceremony will take place
at 2 p.m. in the Wedding Garden at
Florida Botanical Gardens, 12520
Ulmerton Road in Largo. To add
to the ambiance of the event the
Charmonizers barber shop quartet
have once again volunteered to
serenade the couples and the Clerk's
Office employees have chipped in to
provide wedding cake. Couples will
receive a special, commemorative
Marriage Certificate, which will be
mailed within one week from the
date of the ceremony with the official
certificate of marriage.
The Clerk has waived the normal
$30 fee to perform the marriage.
Standard marriage license fees will
still apply.
To participate, couples must sign up
at any Pinellas County Clerk's office
by Monday, February 8, 2010.
The number of couples may be
limited due to space. Marriage
licenses must be applied for between
December 21, 2009, and February 11,
2010, in order to participate on the
February 14, 2010, wedding date.
All couples should arrive at the
Botanical Gardens by 1 p.m. on the
day of the event with their marriage
license and identification.

Iso much hate the cold that at
the first hint that Florida isn't
facing an unexpected ice age,
I have these wild fantasies. They
involve seeing the sun for more than
an hour at a time, wearing shorts
and bathing suits instead of jeans
and sweatshirts, and splashing
around in the water.
Given that, you'll understand that
after a few weeks of shivering and
using more than my allotted share
of lip balm and moisturizer, I had
no defenses when I walked into
the kayak outfitter Monday. Oh,
sure, I told myself I was only there
to help my better half look at new
kayaks, but from the moment I saw
her, I had to have her. Sleek, with
a chiseled keel, and more room for
Calypso The Wonder Hound to ride
in the cockpit, she has a bevy of
extras that my functional but basic
kayak (now approaching the ripe
old age of seven) doesn't.
Faster than you can say "impulse
purchase" I had a new lime green
kayak. Only after I got her home
and saw my old kayak looking at me
with reproach in her paddles did I
feel a twinge of shame, because she
has served me well.
I remember the day I got her,
rushing down to the Narrows and
paddling around, trying out her skeg,
adjusting the seat, and reveling in
the sound my paddle made in the
water. We've traveled the state
together, and while we've had some
rough times (like the time I managed
to unintentionally roll the boat
while putting in from a rather steep
bank at Lithia Springs) we've had
some great ones, too (like the time
a dolphin surfaced inches from my
paddle at Fort DeSoto.) She's taken
me past green heron chicks on Clam
Bayou and made me mourn the loss
of Florida countryside as we glided
down the straight, lifeless banks of
the straightened Kissimmee River.
Kayaks and canoes serve many
Floridians well; they bring us down
to eye level with the nature we


want so keenly to protect. Anytime
I want to see what progress (or lack
thereof) the city, state, or various
watchdog groups are making (or
blocking) in Clam Bayou, I can put
in at the city park and paddle the
mangroves myself. If I want to see
how bad this year's drought is, I
can drive to the Econlockhatchee,
Wekiwa or Hillsborough rivers and
look at the water lines on as I paddle
past the trees. From my cockpit I
see the story of the river, creek, or
bay, as told by the ibis and orchids
and manatee.
You could call me an instant
gratification environmentalist,
which I freely admit isn't the most
selfless sort. If it's something close
to my heart (like the Everglades)
or my home (like Clam Bayou),
I care. While I'd love to hike the
Appalachian Trail someday, the
issues surrounding it are mere
environmental abstractions in my
mind. I know they're out there, like
communism or bioweapons, but
it's harder for me to get worked up
about them.
During Gulfport council meetings,
councilman Sam Henderson recently
started mentioning mountaintop
removal mining, a practice
associated with coal mining. Last
week, Henderson asked the city to
sign their support for ending this
practice. His request met with some
derisive snickers from some of the
citizens attending the meeting.
While I don't think the public
displays of derision were anything
approaching mature or appropriate,
I didn't get why Henderson cared,
either. I mean, Clam Bayou is right
here, and there are groups trying to
destroy the last remaining estuary
on Boca Ciega Bay. Why on earth
waste even a moment on somebody
else's problem?
I'm guessing Henderson's one
of those fools who sees "The Big
Picture." Perhaps he mistakenly
believes the nature you touch isn't
the only nature worth protecting.


I suppose he naively thinks that
every city and state has its own
water quality, wildlife and air and
water contamination issues, and
really, what does it cost one city
to pledge its support for another?
Or worse: he might want council to
do this because he cares about the
environment and it's the right thing
to do.
Well, I can tell him right now
that we just don't need that kind of
crazy talk on council. We do enough,
what with our biofuels, sporadic
bayou clean ups and lip service
to "saving the planet." We have
curbside recycling, for heaven's
sake. What's next, Mr. Henderson?
Clean drinking water for everyone?
Asking the state to find alternative,
cleaner sources of energy? Finding a
way to make our recycling program
more efficient and viable?
Get with the program, Mr.
Henderson. Don't you know that
the whole world can go to hell as
long as we protect our little square
of paradise? We exist in a vacuum,
so changes to the rest of the world
won't ever impact us. As long as I
can take my shiny new kayak down
to the Bayou and paddle, what do I
care?
Crazy talk, this notion of protecting
someone else's nature. What are you
thinking? I'm certain those folks
in Appalachia, should they ever
hear about Clam Bayou, won't say,
"Hey, that's like what's happening
here. We can't do much, but maybe
we should do something. We
understand; we've been there. We
know what it's like to worry about
losing something precious."
Because, you know, most people
are like me. Now, if you want to
go ahead and be the better man, if
you want to push the city to be a
little bit more socially responsible
than it was when you took office,
or give us the reputation of being
environmentally aware, you just go
right ahead.
I'll be over here in the corner, secure
in the knowledge that because I
pluck the occasional soda can out
of the water while paddling Clam
Bayou, I've done enough.

the chapter sweethearts on Saturday,

Laureate Epsilon Theta
entertained Preceptor Epsilon Nu
on Saturday, January 23 at the
home of Val Rankin's daughter at
11 a.m. Chapter members provided
a delicious brunch. After eating,
members and guests enjoyed a game
of "dirty Bingo" whereby once all
the prizes were won, then the gift
stealing began. There were several
gifts, especially the "balloon" bag
which had numerous holders.
Laureate Epsilon Theta's next
regular meeting will be held on
Wednesday, January 27 with Val
Rankin being the hostess at 7 p.m.

All Dressed Up with So Many Places to Go!






















Members of the Town Shores Red Hatters enjoyed a wonderful cruise. The
floor shows were very entertaining, the food great, the tin-a-ling coming from
the lounge area and all the shore trips kept them entertained. They had a few
minor casualties that were treated in sick bay, kept watch over a stranded
boat until the coast guard arrived to give aid to the people on board and had a
few guilt feelings that they ate too much ice cream, but are looking forward to
another cruise next year.
On February 12 they will have their own "Strawberry Festival" along with
Bunko in the clubhouse lounge from 1-3 p.m. They will need a head count so
please RSVP to Judy at 344-7558, Bev at 381-2122 or Petie at 343-6450 if you
plan to attend.
Don't forget they will attend the play "Anything Goes" this Sunday at 2 p.m.
at the St. Petersburg Little Theatre.

S. of hair to Locks of Love on Monday, January 25,
2010 in front of a class of preschoolers age 3-5. It
took her about 2 years to reach the length needed for
a donation. Tiffany Anderson, creative Director and
Hair Specialist of Beau Monde Salon (and mother
to one of the students) cut and styled Ms. Joanne's
hair while the children watched and played. Ms.
Joanne said she will gladly donate again as soon as
her hair is long enough.

Tim Henson Let Go As Boca Ciega's JV Football Coach

On October 22, 2009, Boca
Ciega junior varsity football
coach Tim Henson became
one of the winningest coaches
in the school's history,
beating Tarpon Springs 22
-0. As the JV football coach,
Coach Tim, as he was called,
finished 2006, his first year,
with only one loss, to St.
Pete High. The following
three seasons, 2007, 2008
and 2009 he took his team to
three perfect, back-to-back
undefeated seasons. He was
a coach, by many accounts,
who was a wonderful mentor
for his players, a dedicated
teacher who stayed involved
in his player's lives, who
called the parents whenever
he felt there was a problem
and a coach who constantly
encouraged camaraderie
and teamwork to his kids.
He earned high praise for
his coaching ethics, from
players, parents and other
coaches. He washed the
team uniforms on his own
dime. He did this on his own
time; he was never paid.
By November 3, 2009 he
was let go by varsity coach
Steve Thomas.
There are different
accounts of what happened.
Coach Thomas referred me
to Bogie Athletic Director
Heather Holloway, who told
me that Coach Thomas fired


Coach Henson because of
a philosophical difference
of coaching styles and that
Coach Thomas had the full
backing of the administrative
team, which included
Principal Paula Nelson.
"We met about it and
reviewed Coach Thomas'
concerns about Coach Tim
and while there were a lot of
positives and we had hoped
to work out a team effort,
Coach Thomas felt there was
just too much of a difference
in coaching styles to make it
work, "Holloway explained.
Coach Henson says that's
not quite how he remembered
it.
"I usually stay on the
sidelines when the varsity
plays, helping out and
encouraging the kids,
checking if the other coaches
need anything. A day or
two before the October 30th
Seminole game at Seminole,
Coach Thomas asked me
if I would film the game
from the booth, which is on
the opposing team's side. I
respectfully told him that
I really wasn't comfortable
shooting the game; I'm not
much of one for camera
work and my eyes aren't as
good as they used to be. I
also told him that I really
wanted to be on the sidelines
for that game, as several of
my JV kids were dressing
as varsity for the first time
and I wanted to be there to
encourage them and settle
them down, if they needed
it. So I told him I didn't want
to do it and could he find
someone else. I didn't think
anything of it until we got
to the Seminole game and
Coach Thomas asked me
again to shoot the game. I
told him again that I just
didn't feel comfortable and
that I wanted to be with my
players on the field. Ijust felt
that I would be more help for
them if I was on the field. We
played the game.
The following Tuesday,
November 3, he called me in


for a meeting at 3:30. I got
there late because I work in
Clearwater, which he knew.
He told me I was suspended
for telling him no and to give
him my keys and coach's
shirt. I just looked at him. I
was in shock, but I gave him
my stuff."
Coach Henson then
contacted both Principal
Nelson and Administrative
Director Heather Holloway
to request a meeting with
them, him and Coach
Thomas. It was there that
he learned that he wasn't
suspended, but fired.
"I am still in shock," Coach
Tim says.
Bridgette Fields, a football
mom whose son played for
Coach Tim, says she has
pulled her son from the
football program at Bogie.
"I thought firing Coach Tim
was really messed up. They
let a good coach go. I won't
let my son play for Coach
Thomas. I've heard him
curse and yell at the kids
when they make a mistake,
especially in front of the rest
of the team." Fields says.
Tanya Franks, whose two
boys played for Coach Tim,
was especially surprised and
upset.
"The whole bunch of us
parents, we just stood with
our mouths wide open. The
reasons for his firing don't
sound legitimate. He takes
a personal interest in all
the kids and has always told
us parents to call him if we
have any concerns. I look at
him as the Tony Dungee of
St. Pete."
April Runcie agrees. Her
son has played the last two
years with JV and is moving
up to varsity.
"Coach Tim was always
strict, but fair and he didn't
let the kids run amok on the
sidelines. He always asked
the boys to wear nice shirts
and ties on game day. My
son loved it; people would
always recognize him as a
member of the football team.


It made him feel really good.
I'm mad as a hornet right
now and I think it puts the
kids in a bad situation. I've
heard a lot of them don't
want to play football now."
Runcie said.
Regardless of what has
happened, Coach TimHenson
wants both Paula Nelson
and Heather Holloway to
know that he is so thankful
and grateful for their past
support. He has accepted a
JV coaching position with St.
Pete High School, who called
him as soon as they heard he
was available.

Discover Yourself: Lifestyle Change for Those 50 and Older

If you really want to lose weight
or get in shape but you are totally
overwhelmed by all the incredibly
young and impossibly toned bodies
