Gulfport: the Musical

The City of Gulfport will be celebrating its Centennial
Anniversary in 2010! Together, the City of Gulfport and
the Gulfport Community Players will be kicking off this
year long celebration by staging a never-before-seen
musical at the Catherine A. Hickman Theater of Gulfport
entitled, "Gulfport: The Musical".
The Players will be staging a special one-night-only VIP
performance of this musical on Friday, January 8 preceded
by a social hour beginning at 7 p.m. VIP Tickets are
available by advance reservation only for just $25 each,
which includes hors d'oeuvres and two complimentary
drinks. To reserve your VIP tickets, please call the

Park" Returns
to Gulfport
Following the successful
November premiere of Gulfport's
"Antiques in the Park" series,
the show will return to ('lymin.-
Park on Saturday, January 2
from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This
outdoor antiques and collectibles
fair is co-sponsored by the City
of Gulfport and the Gulfport
Lions Club, and is held in the
first block of Beach Boulevard
at the intersection of Gulfport
Boulevard.
There will be a great assortment
of vintage fun for sale at
Antiques in the Park including
estate jewelry, old pottery, art,
china and glassware, clocks, old
beer signs, tools, linens, toys,
Florida memorabilia, furniture,
primitives, and even vintage

About this play: Gil Perloth, with the
help of Lynne Brown, wrote "Gulfport:
The Musical"-including the music for
it during the last year and a half.
Gil has lived in Gulfport for the last
12 years and is quite well known
for his playwriting ability, with
many published plays to his credit.
"Gulfport: The Musical" centers on
highlights of the history of Gulfport,
with a little poetic license thrown in
for good measure! It is most definitely
a musical, with over 20 original songs,
plus a little history. Chances are, most
of us will not be around for Gulfport's
200th anniversary celebration, so be
sure to catch this one!
Help Gulfport kick off its Centennial
Celebration in style! Meet your
neighbors and friends at the Theater
for a little finger food, socializing, and
a great play about our wonderful City!
If you can't make it to this special VIP
performance, the play will run from

other products. The Get Rescued
event has become one of Gulfport's
most popular and beloved street
festivals. And attendees are invited
to bring along their own leashed,
well-behaved dogs. Proceeds from
fundraisers and the Get Rescued
festival benefit the non-profit
rescue groups. Participants are also
encouraged to bring donations of pet
food and cat litter to be distributed
to the rescue groups.

Spaghetti Supper
The Gulfport Lions Club will be
hosting their Spaghetti Supper on
January 9. All their events support
community outreach programs in
sight conservation; four Pancake
Breakfasts, a Shrimp Boil in March,
along with our Fish Fry (September),
our Spaghetti Suppers (October
and January) and Journey for Sight
(March). Some of the entities that
they sponsor are The Florida Lions
Camp for the Visually Impaired,
The Watson Center for the Visually
Impaired, the Conklin Center for
the Multi- Handicapped Blind,
the Central Florida Eye Bank,
Southeast Guide Dogs, WUSF Radio
Reading Service, the Florida Lions

Garden Club to
Hold Workshops
The Garden Club of St. Petersburg
will hold a Coffee & Garden Crafts
Workshop on Monday, January 4
from 10-12 noon at the Garden Club
Center, 500 Sunset Drive S. in St.
Petersburg. A materials fee of $3.50
for Garden Club members and $4.50
for guests and the general public
will be charged to cover supplies.
The workshop will be on "Making
Something New from Something
Broken". Bring some of your broken
jewelry that you no longer want
and make a new fun items from it.

Audition for "You Can't
Take It with You"
The Gulfport Community Players
will be holding auditions for the
comedy, "You Can't Take It with You",
on Monday, January 4 and Tuesday,
January 5 at 7 p.m. Auditions will
be held at the Players' Back Door
Theater, located at 4919 17 Avenue
S. in Gulfport. This classic comedy
will be directed by Eileen Navarro
and she'll need a cast of 19 people,


including: seven females (mid 20's
to 50's). One of these females must
be black, in her 30's. Eileen also
needs another actress in her late 20's
who can perform ballet movements.
She'll also need 12 males (20's 70's),
including one black actor. There will
be cold readings at the audition,
although not necessarily all from
the script. Performance dates are
March 4 through March 14, 2010 at
the Catherine A. Hickman Theater of
Gulfport.

This play is set in New York City
during the Great Depression. The
play revolves around the very
eccentric family of Martin Vanderhof,
a former Wall Street tycoon, who
spends his time throwing darts and
going to college commencements
throughout the city. His daughter
is a playwright, while her husband
manufactures fireworks in their
basement. Their daughter practices
ballet in the living room under the
tutelage ofa Russian instructor. There
is also a dinner party that goes very
wrong, ending with some exploding
fireworks and a night in jail! Toss in
a very complicated romance, made
even more complicated by one set
of the parents, and you have a very
funny comedy that should be just the
thing to start off the New Year!
This play won the Pulitzer Prize
in 1936, and a few years later (after
being made into a movie), it won the
Academy Award for Best Picture for
1938. It's avery fast moving play, with
a lot of physical action involved.
All interested people are urged to
try out for a part, regardless of their
previous acting experience.

St. Alban's Presents
"Godspell"
St. Alban's Episcopal Church
presents Broadway on the Beach at
St. Albans. The first production is
the musical, "Godspell", one of the
biggest off-Broadway and Broadway
successes of all time. Performances
are Friday, January 8 at 8 p.m.,
Saturday, January 9 at 8 p.m. and
Sunday, January 10 at 3 p.m. All
performances will take place in the
church sanctuary located at 9451
Blind Pass Road in St. Pete Beach.
Based primarily on the Gospel
according to St. Matthew, "Godspell"
features a sparkling score and boasts
a string of recognizable songs, led by
the hit, "Day by Day". St. Alban's
choirmaster and organist, Edward
Crader, who starred in the original
off-Broadway production in 1971, is
directing "Godspell." The cast consists
primarily of voice students from the
Marcia P. Hoffman Performing Arts
Institute at Ruth Eckerd Hall.

Q: Could you please explain the deal that the city of Gulfport has with
Bright House? We cannot get Verizon because of some deal. What is the deal,
when did it start, why was it put in place and when will it end? Submitted

A: According to city manager Jim O'Reilly, Gulfport doesn't have any deals
with Bright House that prevents other cable and internet companies from pro-
viding services to Gulfportians. After attempting unsuccessfully to call Veri-
zon and ask them why they do not offer service in Gulfport, we contacted the
city again. Verizon explained its decision to the city, O'Reilly told The Gab-
ber, as a "market-driven" one. In other words, Verizon doesn't believe it would
make enough money in Gulfport to make offering service worthwhile to the
company.

of the Suncoast Seabird Sanctuary

wild bird hospital and sanctuary

Angie Boivin, St. Pete: "Yes, I have
one. I just want to do better than I did
last year; I want to make a difference
for my family and my community. I
do some volunteer work over at Boca
Ciega High School as a mentor. I
work with young girls, just listening
mostly to their school-related
problems about tests, classes and
activities. Sometimes they're nervous
about a test, so I'll help them study.
It's very rewarding and I feel like I'm
making a difference in their lives.
We just moved here from Deland in
July and I plan on getting even more
involved in other things in our new
community as we get acclimated. It's

make more money and I don't mind
working hard to do it. I hope 2010 is
a better year for everybody."


Michael Pipkin, St. Pete: 1 I New Year's resolution is to focus more on school
work rather than the extra-curricular activities. I'm a senior at Bogie and I make
A's and B's now. I also made Honor Roll, but I want to make straight A's for
the rest of the year. I have three B's and I want to turn them to all As. Before,
from ninth grade to twelfth, I really struggled with school. But I decided to get
it together and really work harder. I work two jobs; I work at Sweetbay and
I will also work for the Rays on their grounds crew. That's a seasonal job and
they're holding a spot for me until I finish school. I love it there because I play
first base for Bogie's baseball team and it's great experience to be around the pro
ball players. This year I bought my own car and I pay my own car insurance. I'm
really motivated because after I graduate I'd like to get my own apartment. I
want to go to St. Pete College, get some classes under my belt and then transfer
to FSU to play baseball. That's been my dream all along."

If You're From South Dakota,
The Water is Fine
Fifty degrees may not seem that great to many Floridians, but for the Northern
State University students, it's not that bad. Northern State University swimmers
traveled from Aberdeen, South Dakota to St. Pete Beach for training and a New
Year's Eve competition. The beach pool, heated to keep water in the 80s, serves
as the team's training ground while they stay in Treasure Island. On Thursday
the team will compete against Kentucky's Center College at St. Petersburg's
Walter Fuller pool. The team's coach, Elyce Kastigar, called the meet "a low-key
competition" and said her team came primarily to hone their skills.
"It's a training trip," Kastigar said as the team streaked through the pool
Tuesday morning. The swimmers spend four hours a day in the pool and two
hours training on land.
The South Dakota swimmers have seen 39-degree summer mornings back
home. This marks the team's second trip to St. Pete Beach.
"We left blizzard conditions and below-freezing temperatures, so I guess this is
better than there," Kastigar said. "We were hoping for a little more warmth but
at least the sun is shining."

Attorney Keith Sanders Handles Bankruptcies with Experience and Sensitivity

guess you could say my motto
is 'been there, done that'," says
I Keith Sanders, from the law
office of Andre Keith Sanders, P.A.
He says that for two reasons. First,
he says his more than 17 years of ex-
perience as an attorney specializing
in handling "literally thousands" of
bankruptcies means that he has dealt
with virtually any kind of problem
or issue that might arise with them.
And, secondly, he had to file a Chap-
ter 13 bankruptcy himself a few years
ago. He says that experience makes
him very sensitive to the kinds of
things people face when making the
difficult decision to file.
"Most attorneys have never been
in a situation where they have been
worried about how to keep the lights
on, but I have been there myself so I
can really relate to what people are
going through," said Sanders. "Plus,
many people are very embarrassed
when they come to me, but I when I
tell them how embarrassing it was for
me to have to stand in front of judges
and colleagues who knew me and go
through the process myself, that usu-
ally helps to put people more at ease
and understand that I have been there
and done that MYSELF."
'You know, in 99 percent of bank-
ruptcy cases the situation is that bad
things happen to good people and then
they have gotten into a bad situation.
They have gone through an expensive
health crisis or a divorce or perhaps
someone has just gotten in over their

Sanders offers a free initial consul-
tation with no set time limit on it. "It
might take 20 minutes or it might
take two hours, it just depends of the
client's individual set of circumstanc-
es," he said. "We can meet at their
home or in my office, we can even so
it over the phone if I they can provide
me with the financial information we
need to discuss their situation." Sand-
ers says that he can often offer other
solutions besides bankruptcy such
as re-negotiating payment schedules
with creditors or reorganizing per-
sonal finances. "For example, I often
have people who can avoid bankrupt-
cy if they just get out from under the
burden of a house they can no longer

afford because of a job loss or some
other situation," he noted.
He moved to the Tampa Bay area
in July 2005 from Atlanta where he
was a partner/owner of Hamilton &
Sanders, LLC a firm specializing in
consumer bankruptcy and real es-
tate closings. The firm regularly filed
between 40-60 bankruptcy cases a
month. Prior to that he worked for
three other major law firms in Atlan-
ta from 1992 to 2003. All three firms
specialized in consumer bankruptcy
cases. He began his career as a staff
attorney for the United States Trust-
ee in Atlanta. He is licensed to prac-
tice law in both Florida and Georgia.
"I like what I do because I feel like I
can help people get a fresh start," said
Sanders. "When you have financial
difficulties it can really affect your
entire life. It has negative implica-
tions on you emotionally and it can
even damage or ruin your personal
relationships. I do try and encourage
people to come see me early on, even
if they are just starting to get behind
in payments or feel they are in over
their head. If you can start working
with an attorney from the very start
it can really reduce your stress level
as I can stop harassing creditor calls.
I can also see if we can work out ar-
rangements that a creditor might not
consider when working directly with
my client."

Bankruptcy can be one solution to
getting back on your feet financially,
but it may not be the best or only so-

Sanders has held a number of semi-
nars and written professional papers
concerning bankruptcy law in gen-
eral, ECF requirements and new is-
sues. He is a former director of the
Bankruptcy Section of the State Bar
of Georgia.
Outside of the courtroom, Sanders
lives in an unusual home in Gulfport
that was one of the featured prop-
erties in last year's Pink Flamingo
Tour of Homes. It has a tree grow-
ing right up through the floor and
up through the ceiling of his kitchen.
He has three dogs and a cat. When
he was living in Atlanta he was very
involved with helping raise funds for
a number of AIDS service organiza-
tions. He is hoping to get involved
with local charitable groups as soon
as possible.

Happy Endings
We're facing the final week of a
year that, for many, was the most
stressful in recent memory. Family
frustrations, mortgage woes, money
troubles, divorce -- snippets of
the year's events from the life of a
woman who called recently to tell
me her dogs are hopeless and she's
going to put them to sleep.
Stress is a powerful motivator of
irrational and dire acts.
This woman is the fed-up owner of
a couple of canine carpet-wetters.
They aren't housebroken, never were
and never will be, she insisted.
"Are they trained?" I asked.
"No," she said, "but they're
hopeless."
Nothing is hopeless that hasn't yet
been given a chance.


When times are tough, the tendency
is to seek a scapegoat, someone
or something to blame for all our
troubles. This approach to problem-
solving sees a success rate on a par
with telling ourselves, year after
year, that we will be happy when,
fill in the blank, the boss gives us
that promotion, the spouse develops
a fondness for foreign films, the kid
forgoes the drums for Zen meditation
happiness-producing techniques
that work as smoothly as shaving
with tweezers.
These fallback behaviors fail
because we're not holding the reins
on our own happiness. Other people
or pets are the cause of our distress,
and other people or pets should get
their acts together. But difficulties
are resolved when we acknowledge
them for what they are, accept
responsibility for our part and take
aim at their roots.

This woman had to acknowledge
that her dogs didn't drain her bank
account or destroy her marriage.
She had to accept responsibility for
the fact that she lived with two dogs
she had never trained to behave
according to her expectations. And
with all the other stressors in her
life, she was unable to see through
the overwhelm to the source of this
particular trouble: lack of training.
Housebreaking is the No. 1
problem among dog owners. It's
also the easiest to remedy. Most
puppies and dogs, regardless of age,
can be completely and permanently
housebroken in a matter of days.
But they must be taught.
After I listened to her, she listened
to me. We agreed that I would go
to her home and put the dogs on

I did. Three days later, they were

around.
But when I think about the drastic
measures people resort to in hard
times, and the loved ones that suffer
as a result, it breaks my heart. This
woman, in a hurricane of hardship
and anxiety, was on the brink of
terminating those that will prove to
be her most enduring and plentiful
sources of emotional support and
joy: her dogs.
Sometimes, when the going gets
tough, the tough get clueless. It isn't
news that people take their stress
out on their loved ones, but that
doesn't mean it's right or smart or
even helpful. Those who truly love
us are exactly who we need by our
side in good times and bad. And very
few people love as deep and as true
as a dog.

Need Your Help
Be the voice for an abused or
neglected child. Hundreds more
volunteer Guardians ad Litem
are urgently needed to be a child's
voice in court and the child welfare
system. The average time needed is
six to 10 hours a month. A Guardian
ad Litem works with a professional
staff and an attorney to ensure that
a child has a safe, caring and stable
environment.

in January. Laurie Marino, floral
designer and instructor, is bringing
her popular floral design class back.

accepted for the 54th Annual Junior
Sungoddess Scholarship Program.
The Junior Sungoddess program,
which began in 1956, is a
scholarship-based program which
recognizes high school Junior and
Senior girls in Pinellas County who
display community awareness and
involvement, academic achievement
and embody the values and poise to
represent the Festival of States as
goodwill ambassadors. Over $5,000
in scholarship awards were provided
to the winner and two runners-up

James Scalese Honored At Library
Honoring 78 years of masterful achievements in Art including drawing,
painting and sculpture. Held at the Gulfport Library, Jan. 8 - Feb. 5

James A. Scalese, son of Italian immigrant parents was born in 1920 in the
coal mining, steel making, Pittsburgh area. Poverty and hard work couldn't
keep him from finding inspiration in Renaissance Art, particularly Michelan-
gelo, and Flamenco music. These passions have led James through a multi-
tude of artistic endeavors in his lifetime.
He worked for the WPA before going to the war torn Philippines to make
invasion maps. After the war, Jim returned to Pittsburgh and studied briefly
at Carnegie Mellon, taught at the Art Institute, and worked at some of the
top Industrial and Commercial display companies in the area.
While raising a family Jim also became a master portrait painter and his
ecclesiastical paintings adorn a multitude of churches in Pa. His designs were
used for mosaics around the world. He also found time to start a Flamenco
society and through this was able to play host to the greats of this genre
including Sabicas and Escadero.
Since moving to St. Pete he has continued to work on various projects
including sculpture, painting and drawing. Jim has been also teaching many
community Art classes and has amassed many inspired and thankful stu-
dents.
The Gulfport Library will honor Scalese's 78 years of masterful achieve-
ments in Art including drawing, painting and sculpture January 8th through
February 5th. Opening 5:00 - 8:00. The library is located at 5501 28th Ave. S.

Local Obituaries


CANDELORO, PAT J., died on
Dec. 24, 2009 at his home in So.
Pasadena, FL, after a long and
courageous battle with cancer. He
was surrounded by his loving wife of
53 years Barbara (Smith) Candeloro
and his family. Pat formerly resided
on Richard Drive in Portsmouth, RI.
Mr. Candeloro served in the Army
for three years during the Korean
conflict. He worked for IBM for 38
years before retiring in 1990, then
moved to Florida. Pat was an avid
fisherman. He could always be found
off the shores of Newport in his
boat, the "Mr. C." Upon retiring he
took up tennis and organized many
tournaments in his condo complex.
Pat was "The Ambassador" to the
Ambassador building he lived in,
always out front or at the pool to say
hello. He was the man everyone came
to whether it was to discuss condo
fees or help with their computers. He
was always there for his family and
friends. Besides his wife of 53 years,
he leaves his four children, Pat J.
Candeloro fiance6 Susan Ehret) of
Middletown, RI, David A. Candeloro
(Connie) of Pensacola, FL, Cynthia
B. Martin (Alvin) of South Pasadena,
and Pamela J. Raposa (Phillip) of
Swansea, MA. He also leaves four
grandchildren, Jessica, Jenny,
Christopher and Stephanie plus two
great granddaughters, Brooke and
Leila. Two memorial masses will be
celebrated in his honor. The first in
Florida at St. John Vianney Church,
St. Pete Beach on Jan. 16 at 11 a.m.
The other will be in Portsmouth, RI
at St. Anthony's Church on Feb. 6 at
10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in

COSTELLO, DR. MARY ROSE,
97, of St. Petersburg, passed
away December 11, 2009. Born in
Jacksonville, IL, Dr. Costello moved
from Detroit, MI to Gulfport, FL in
1980. An audiologist and speech
pathologist, she retired from Henry
Ford Medical Center as associate in
the department of otolaryngology
and adjunct associate professor of
Wayne State University, Department
of Medicine. Dr. Costello received her
bachelor's degree from Washington


University and her master's and
doctor of philosophy degrees from
Northwestern University. Earlyin her
career, Dr. Costello was a teacher and
later Executive Director of an Atlanta
School for the Speech and Hearing
Handicapped. Dr. Costello was active
in several professional organizations,
a fellow of the American Speech and
Hearing Association, an officer of the
Board of the Alexander Graham Bell
Association for the Deaf, member of
its editorial committee, and in 1972,
was the national program chairman.
She was one of the founders of the
Academy of Rehabilitative Audiology.
Dr. Costello served as president of the
Michigan Association of Speech and
Hearing and was awarded the honors
and distinguished service awards of
the organization. Dr. Costello served
six years on the Sensory Study section
of Social and Rehabilitation Services,
US Department of Health Education
and Welfare. She authored many
papers on hearing and speech as well
as a children's book on hearing aid
use. Dr. Costello was a member of the
Most Holy Name of Jesus Catholic
Church in Gulfport and Blessed
Trinity in St. Petersburg, and served
as president of the women's club from
1985 to 1986. She was a member of
the Pasadena Yacht and Country
Club. She is survived by a niece
and several nephews, many great
nieces and nephews, and numerous
great-great nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Most Holy
Name of Jesus Catholic Church,
Gulfport, FL on Friday, January 8,
2010 at 10 a.m. and burial will be in
Calvary Cemetery in Jacksonville,

in 1947, from Huntingdon, PA, and

LONGPRE, ROLAND "ROLY", of
Ottawa, Canada, long-time winter
resident of South Pasadena and
Gulfport, passed away suddenly
on December 21, 2009. He will be
forever sadly missed by his loving
wife and best friend, Karen, family
and friends in Canada and Florida.
A "Celebration of Life" gathering will
be held at a later date.

MCCOY, FORREST W. "BILL",
85, of Gulfport, died Friday,
December 25, 2009 at Hospice House
Woodside. Born in Paoli, IN, he was
the youngest of four boys of Earl and
Burnetta McCoy. He was a founding
member of Christ the King Catholic
Church in Paoli. He was a WWII vet
having served in the 211st Army Air
Corp base unit flying B-24s. He was a
member of the VFW. He later became
a member of the United Assoc. of
Journeymen and Apprentices of the
Plumbing & Pipe Fitters union and
held membership for over 55 years.
He is preceded in death by his loving
wife of 55 years, Mary. Since 1951
he was involved with the sport of
breeding and showing pure bred dogs.
He relinquished his professional
handler's license and became an
American Kennel Club judge in 1973
judging worldwide until 2007 when he
was granted emeritus status. He was
a founding member of Bloomington
Indiana Kennel Club and Lakeland-
Winter Haven Kennel Club, being
given life membership in both clubs.
He also was a member of the Sara-
Bay Kennel Club and the American
Pomeranian Club. During retirement
he also enjoyed his time with his
neighbors in the Nottingham Bldg. of
Town Shores andwas a member of the
billiard club. Survivors include his
daughters, Vicki McCoy and Dorothy
Sanderson, both of Gulfport and
several nieces and nephews. Services
will be held Thursday, December 31
in the Chapel of Bon Secour Maria
Manor starting with a visitation at
10 a.m. followed by a funeral Mass

Pinellas County to offer H1N1
Vaccinations To General Public
The Pinellas County Health Department announced Monday that the public
can get vaccinated for the H1N1 virus, more commonly known as "Swine Flu,"
at five health department locations.
The main health department center located at 205 Dr. Martin Luther King St.
North in St. Petersburg will offer vaccinations from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday
through Friday and from 9 a.m. until noon on Saturdays.
Four other locations will offer vaccinations weekdays between 8 a.m. and
5 p.m. They are:

*Largo: 12420 130th Avenue North
* Clearwater: 310 N. Myrtle Avenue

It's Time to Get Our Heads Out of the Sand


f there were any illusions about
the intent of the radical Muslim
movement, it should be dispelled
now. In fact, this latest attempt at
blowing up an airliner, illustrates
the depth and scope of what has to be
considered a total process: actions by
small cells and individuals aiming at
the U.S. mainland. Actually, aimed
anywhere at non-Muslims as well as
non-radical Muslims.
Efforts bythe Obama administration
to regard each incident as a single
criminal act, is absurd. And, the
reluctance to move on individuals
without enough evidence that
could convict him in a U.S. court
is dangerous to the country. The
Muslim American army major who
did the shooting at Ft. Hood was
connected, and had been connected
to radical Muslims. The FBI knew
it, but no one acted upon it.
Similarly, the Nigerian who tried
to blow up the airliner was known.
His father, a prominent Nigerian
banker, went to the U.S. Embassy
to warn them. However, according
to Janet Napolitano, Homeland
Security head, that was not enough
"evidence" to create any activity
other than placing the man on a
watch list. That defies logic and

common sense. A father does not
turn in his son lightly.
No one in the administration,
according to CNN Sunday evening,
expressed alarm about flaws in
"the system". Instead Napolitano
expressed contentment because the
actions of passengers and crew on
the airliner went well. President
Obama was not informed until three
hours after the incident and declined
any direct comment. I understand
comment will come this week and
may have come before this column
is published.
The fact is that "the system", as it
was before 9/11, is still broke. Nearly
ten years later, communications
between agencies may have
improved, but certainly aren't
what they should be. Yes, there has
been progress and there have been
arrests and attempts at terrorism
have been thwarted. However, I get
the feeling that the urgency isn't
there.
Maybe that feeling was helped
along by earlier efforts to discourage
the use of the word "terrorism" and
the link to the Muslim religion. Or,
perhaps the decision to try plotters
of the 9/11 attack in U.S. courts
helped create that atmosphere.

In the meantime, the British press
reports there are small cells of British
citizen Muslims being trained in
Yemen and set to return to Britain
in a few months. Obviously, there
are cells in this country - note the
five Americans arrested in Pakistan
and Afghanistan - and elsewhere
ready to move to actions large and
small.
The fact is, we are in a war, a non-
nation war, that requires different
tactics and different rules and
different actions. We better find a
way to deal with it sooner rather
than later.

Geno has returned for Saturday nights which is steak night. He plays a variety of instruments, sings, tells jokes, etc.
His creativity will be readily apparent.

A Greener View

All-America Selections'
2010 Award Winners
One way I have found to pick the
best plants for my garden is to look
at the All-America winners for
the new year. If it has been tested
and approved in the All-America
Selections (AAS) testing program, I
can trust the plant to grow.
AAS trial gardens have tested
around 50 plant varieties every year
since 1932, and they only accept
previously unsold varieties. Each
testing garden has at least one official
AAS judge. The judge supervises
the trial, but no judges are paid for
their efforts. Typically, the judge
is a horticultural professional and
the site is part of a seed company
trial grounds, university or other
horticultural institution.
The judge evaluates entries by
looking for desirable qualities, such
as novel flower forms, flower colors,
flower show above foliage, fragrance,
length of flowering season, and
disease or pest tolerances or
resistance. Vegetables are judged by
searching for such traits as earliness
to harvest, total yield, fruit taste,
fruit quality, ease of harvest, plant
habit, disease and pest resistance.
The judges evaluate AAS trials
all season long, not just an end-
of-season harvest. Based on the
superior qualities, the judge scores
each entry. Only the entries with
the highest nationwide average
score are considered to be worthy of
an AAS award.
When you see the red, white and
blue logo of All-America Selections
on vegetables and flower seed
packets, bedding plant tags or in
catalogs, it is a promise of gardening
success.
Last year, there were four winners:
one flower and three veggies. This
year had four winners, but they
were all flowers.
I have been looking at Zahara
zinnias for the past couple of
summers, and I was pleased to
see the "Zahara Starlight Rose"

zinnia on the winner's list. It has
the typical zinnia flower shape, but
the center is bright pink with white
outer petal edges. It has proven to
be resistant to leaf spot and mildew,
which often kills zinnias, and it is
heat and drought tolerant. Suitable
for containers, these plants grow in
full sun to 12 to 14 inches tall and
wide.
I have never been real fond of
snapdragons, but I may have to
try the double flower form "Twinny
Peach" with its blend of peach tone
colors. "Twinny Peach" will produce
abundant flower spikes, plenty to cut
and place in vases for fresh indoor
bouquets. It exhibited heat tolerance
in the AAS trials and grows about 1
foot tall and wide.
Gaillardias are great sun-loving
flowers that look like daisies. They


often grow too tall and messy. "Mesa
Yellow" has 3-inch flowers that can
be cut for bouquets or left on the
plants to attract butterflies. The
neat, 22-inch plants are adaptable
to small gardens or any type of
container in full sun. When planted
near the edge of the container, they
will cascade down.
Violas or pansies are great winter
bloomers for the warm or cool winter
states. Planted in the fall, they will
bloom all winter and spring until
the summer heat gets them. In cold
winter states, they will bloom in the
fall, go dormant over the winter,
and bloom again in the spring until
the weather gets hot.
The new blue "Endurio Sky Blue
Martien" will look great with
yellow pansies or next spring's
yellow crocus. This viola can also be
planted in the spring. It will grow to
6 inches tall and 10-12 inches wide,
creating a bright spot in any garden.
It is also perfectly suited for window
boxes and hanging gardens, as well
as balcony and patio planters.

Crime Awareness Meeting

The next Gulfport Crime Awareness & Prevention Meeting will be held
on Monday, January 11 at 7 p.m. at the Neighborhood Center located at
1617 49 Street S. This meeting is citywide so all can share.
We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and would
like to offer some tips in that area (these tips are a combination of info received
from local police departments)! Avoid shopping alone, stay alert to your sur-
roundings, avoid carrying large amounts of cash, never leave purses unattend-
ed in shopping carts - keep it close to your body, carry your wallet in an inside
coat pocket/front pants pocket or zippered pocket, walk to your car with your
keys in your hand, lock your car doors immediately once you get inside.
When shopping on-line you should only use companies you know and trust,
keep your personal information private and your password secure, use secure
websites for purchases by looking for the icon of a locked padlock at the bottom
of the screen or "https" in the URL address.
If your family participates in gift giving, be aware that by putting the boxes
out front for trash pick up, you are alerting passerbys that you have "new
toys". Consider disposing of the packaging by other means. When you get the
"new toys", record the brand name, description, model and serial number for
your records -just in case!

What You and I Can Do
To Fix This Economy
It's a mess out there. Unemployment
is higher than it's been in 60 years,
and the U.S. dollar is losing value at
an alarming rate. If that's not bad
enough, fears abound that taxes will
be heading north for all workers, even
while the United States continues
to find itself in a deep, protracted
recession.
On that happy note, let's turn to
the subject at hand. What can we
do, you and I, individually, to turn
this economy around? In a word:
nothing. What you spend this week
and how much you save or burn up
in gasoline won't make one bit of
difference to the U.S. economy. But
what we do can make a big difference
for our individual economic pictures.
Add that to what our friends,
families, neighbors, colleagues and
communities do and we're looking
at the cumulative effect, which can
make a difference.
Here is a list of specific things that
all of us can do, starting today, to get
things back on track in our personal
lives. That is how we can affect the
larger picture:
--Stop living on plastic. Please, just
stop spending more money than you
have. No matter how difficult your
financial picture is right now, adding
to your debt is like pouring gasoline
on a fire. It is going to make things
even worse.
--Get out of debt. I'm talking about
your unsecured consumer debt.
Nothing but higher interest rates
and increased fees are coming down
the pike. You cannot afford to be in
debt. Make a commitment today to
do whatever you must to remove that
financial bondage from your life.
--Rein it in. Yes, you've cut your
expenses. Sure you are becoming
more frugal than ever. Great. Now
double your efforts. I'm serious.
Whatever you are doing now, you can
do better. Challenge every expense,
every purchase. Is it really necessary?
Can you do something else instead?
Can you at least wait a few more
days? Get tough on yourself. What
you do not spend is money you can

use to build your emergency fund or
pay down debt.
--"No" is the word. Place it firmly on
the tip of your tongue during the new
year. "No!" Use it often when you are
tempted to spend foolishly. Just say
"no!" to anything that you cannot buy
with cash. Say "no!" to anything that
will impede your efforts to save and
pay off debt. Keep it handy. It will
save you a lot of grief and allow you


to make economic progress this year.
--Work more. Forget early retirement.
Instead, figure out how you can work
even more, even years longer. This is
going to be a year of extra effort, not
a time to ease off.
--Buy American. We need to get
manufacturing and production to
return to the USA as soon as possible.
When it fits within your budget to
buy goods and services, do everything
you can to buy American. Look
for companies that are producing
products for homes and families at

A divorce is a painful and difficult
experience, but if you understand
the functions and limitations of the
legal system, the process becomes
somewhat more tolerable. This arti-
cle should provide you with a greater


understanding of the process to help
you get through your divorce with re-
alistic ideas and goals.
Florida's divorce system is based on
the principle of "no-fault" meaning
that a divorce will be granted if either
party believes that the marriage is
over. Generally, the causes of the
failure of the marriage are not an
issue in court. All that matters is
that the marriage needs to be ended.
It is not practical for any attorney
to heal the emotional wounds
created by your divorce. You must
understand that the legal system
is not a tool for punishment of your
spouse. Indeed, the courtroom is no
place for revenge.
The best way to conclude your case
is to settle it. Through compromise

negotiations toward settlement can
be more productive and far less
expensive than a full-blown trial.
Every divorce is different. Your
results in a divorce proceeding may
be different from your neighbor's,
friend's, or even a relative's divorce.
You simply cannot rely upon what
happened in other cases and assume
that your results will be identical.
Cases that seem similar may, in fact,
be very different and will be treated
differently under the law.
Unless you settle your case outside
of a formal court proceeding, a judge
must allocate the income and assets
accumulated during the marriage.
The law is that you and your spouse
were financial partners during
the marriage and are presumed
entitled to share in both the assets
and income the partnership made.
You must make a full disclosure of
your finances on a court approved

Financial Affidavit.
For most people, life-styles change
after a divorce. Since divorces do not
create property or income, the court
must divide the marital resources
between two separate households.
Remember, it costs more to run two
households than one. In considering
a settlement, you should consider
whether you can afford the Court
costs and attorney's fees to fully
litigate your case. Fees and costs in
contested cases can be quite high.
Usually, a settlement prior to trial
reduces the expenses considerably,
an important consideration if you
come to the divorce with limited
resources. In our next article, we
will explore child custody/visitation
and child support as part of a divorce
proceeding.

2009 Carols by
Candlelight Review
By Lion Jim Minder
On Friday, December 18 we had
our 2009 Carols by Candlelight
at our Gulfport Lions Den. This
event was spectacular! We had 47
participants answering our request
to join us singing Christmas carols
and to enjoy complimentary pastry
treats. Lions Past District Governor
Norman Xanders played his musical
instruments.
We did five sets of three Christmas
carols. In between each set,
participants told us about memorable
past Christmases. Lion Jim started
us out and told us how to say Merry
Christmas and Happy New Year
in German, Spanish, Italian and
Hawaiian. One of guests told us
about how at the age of 3, he made
a homemade Christmas card for his
dad. Another told us about getting
stuck in a snow storm, playing card
games and the group sharing food.
We heard a woman tell us about how
at the age of 7, she learned that her
parents were indeed Santa shattering
her Santa Claus dreams.
We all enjoyed our 2009 Carols by
Candlelight. We will be doing this
again next year so watch for your
invitation in the Gabber.

Naughty Aussies
Was Scrooge really Australian? You
might think so, judging from a study
coming out of Australia's Monash
University, which concludes that the
modern-day image of Santa Claus
promotes obesity, drunken driving,
speeding and a generally unhealthy
lifestyle.
"Epidemiologically, there is a
correlation between countries that
venerate Santa Claus and those
that have high levels of childhood
obesity," the researchers write. The
link isn't firmly established, they say,
but there "is a possibility that Santa
promotes a message that obesity is
synonymous with cheerfulness and
joviality."
Writing in the British Medical
Journal, public health expert Nathan
Grills suggested Santa go on a diet
and stop eating the Christmas Eve
sweets left by children. He's free,
however, to eat the carrots left for
the reindeer if he gets really hungry.
Nix, too, on the glasses of brandy and
sherry left by parents.
Grills, who apparently doesn't care
if he's on the nice-or-naughty list, had
otherrecommendations: Santa should
swap his sleigh for a bike or other
more health-promoting conveyance.
He should wear a helmet. He should
drop the pipe-smoking habit. And he
should ban the seasonal pandemic of
Santa impersonators, who serve as
potential infectious disease vectors by
allowing dozens of children to cough
and sneeze on them while sitting on
their laps.
REEFER BADNESS
A study of Canadian teenagers,
among the largest consumers of
cannabis worldwide, found that
smoking the illicit drug is harder on
young brains than originally thought.
Writing in the journal Neurobiology
of Disease, researchers at McGill
University in Montreal said daily
consumption of cannabis in teens
can cause significant depression and
anxiety and have an irreversible
long-term effect on the brain.
The study keyed upon the interaction


between cannabis and two important
neurotransmitters in the brain --
serotonin and norepinephrine, which
help regulate functions such as mood
control and anxiety.
"Teenagers who are exposed to
cannabis have decreased serotonin
transmission, which leads to mood
disorders, as well as increased
norepinephrine transmission,
which leads to greater long-term
susceptibility to stress," said Dr.
Gabriella Gobbi, one of the study's
authors.
The study is the first to focus upon
the neurobiological mechanisms at
the root of cannabis' influence on
depression and anxiety, and the first
to show that consumption of the drug
causes more serious damage during
adolescence than adulthood.

Within two years of having sex
for the first time, half of teenage
girls contract at least one of three
common sexually transmitted
infections, according to a published
study by researchers at the Indiana
University School of Medicine. The
three STIs are chlamydia, gonorrhea
and trichomoniasis.

Playing a line position for a college
football team involves lots of high-
intensity exercise, but it doesn't
protect players from obesity, related
health problems or a greater risk of
cardiovascular disease later in life,
researchers say.
An assessment of 90 college football
players on one team found that only
the offensive and defensive linemen
were deemed obese with 25 percent
or more body fat. Among these obese
linemen, almost 60 percent were
insulin-resistant and 42 percent had
metabolic syndrome or at least three
of five risk factors for developing
heart disease or diabetes.
"I think the perception out there is
that football players, at every level,
are getting bigger," said James
Borchers, an assistant professor of
clinical family medicine at Ohio State
University and study author. "But I
think players need to recognize that


as they get into unhealthy levels of
body fat, there's a risk that comes
along with that. And you're not
protected from that risk just because
you're active in football."

CURTAIN CALLS
Two brothers in Los Angeles decided
to remove a bees' nest from a backyard
shed using an illegal firecracker.
They lit the fuse and ran back inside
their house. The explosion was large
enough to blow in a window of the
house, cutting one of the brothers
seriously enough to require medical
attention.
Rushing to the car to get to a
hospital, the injured brother was
stung three times by surviving, angry
bees. Neither brother knew the stung
brother was dangerously allergic to
bee venom. He died of asphyxiation
on the way to the emergency room.
