Operation Santa got an
early Christmas present as
the Gulfport Merchants Asso-

Monday afternoon. The pro-
ceeds were from the Holiday

Two and a half year old Brianna Aviles looks a little
tentative as she tells Santa what she wants for
Christmas at the Clymer Park Christmas Tree lighting
ceremony Monday night. We heard she asked for
some "presents and a baby doll"... she also asked to
get down from Santa's lap.

Replaces Worthington,
Race for Ward I
By Cathy Salustri
Gulfport's mayor Mike Yakes will stay in office
for another term according to the city clerk,
Lesley DeMuth. At the end of the candidate's
qualifying period this past Monday (December
14), no one had filed to run against Yakes.
Vice-Mayor Bob Worthington announced
that he would not run again, and Jennifer
Salmon will take his place in representing
Ward Three. Salmon was the only person to
throw her name in the ring to represent Ward
Three.
Ward One, which includes Town Shores and
the Pasadena Yacht and Country Club, offers
more competition for candidates. Incumbent
Judy Ryerson will face off against four others:
Rosalie Barbieri, David Hastings, David
Steinke and Stanley Solomons all qualified for
the race to represent Ward One.
Elections will take place on March 9 with all
winning candidates taking office the following
week, March 16.

Bench Sign Vote Tabled Pending Workshop
GULFPORT- City Council agreed to postpone the vote on whether or not to allow
advertising on benches and bus shelters. After what Mayor Mike Yakes described
as "confusion" about the issues surrounding the ordinance, the mayor suggested
council table the vote.
"Our purpose has been confused in three different ways," Yakes said as he
requested that council defer the vote until after a workshop.
Council agreed unanimously to do so.

families than we've ever had before.
This will help with food and gifts for
those less fortunate."
( 'h.iiil'.- of Commerce President
Lori Rosso also said that the
Chamber will continue accepting gift
cards, unwrapped toys and monetary
donations for Operation Santa at
the ( h.iiiil.-i office in the Bank of
America Building on 58th Street in
Gulfport.
In addition, the Merchants
Association donated $200.00 to the
Gulfport Senior Center, according
to the association's president, Leslie
Gilchrist. That money was raised
during the Gecko Fest last Spring.

City Allows O'Maddy's
to Sell Alcohol in
Public Areas
GULFPORT- O'Maddy's will sponsor
a fundraiser for owner Joe Guenther's
son's school, Our Savior and Lutheran
School.
According to Guenther, O'Maddy's
will provide dinner, beer and wine for
a $20 fee. Guenther told council all the
money would go to the school so that
every student who wanted to could go
on a Washington D.C. field trip.
Councilmember Michele King cast
the only no vote for allowing the
fundraiser to take place in a public
area.
"We've never had alcohol on the street
before. That's a precedent," she said,
adding that she also had concerns
about allowing a church to use public
property in such a manner.
"Once you open it to the Lutheran
church, you open it to the
Scientologists, and if that's OK, that's
OK," she said.
The fundraiser will take place on
March 6, 2010.

Construction Begins
on Clam Bayou Trail
ST. PETERSBURG-Construction
is set to begin on a recreational
trail through the Childs Park
neighborhood that will connect
the very popular Pinellas Trail to
neighborhood destinations in Childs
Park and the Clam Bayou Estuary.
A groundbreaking ceremony was
held Tuesday in Childs Park, 43rd
St. and llth Ave. S., at 10 a.m. to
mark the occasion.
This first 1.4 mile phase of the
Clam Bayou Trail is a part of the
city's award-winning CityTrails
program that provides over 95 miles
of additional bicycle and pedestrian
facilities throughout St. Petersburg.
Once completed, the 3-mile Clam
Bayou Trail will become part of
the SkI; \\.i Trail that will connect
the Pinellas Trail to a recreational
trail that leads to the fishing piers
along the Sunshine SIy; \\.. Bridge,
and will also connect to a planned
trail along the Pinellas Bayway to
Fort De Soto. Once completed, a
recreational cyclist could travel from

north Pinellas in Tarpon Springs,
through St. Petersburg to Tierra
Verde and the Pinellas tip at the
Sunshine SIy\. y.
The Clam Bayou Trail began as
a partnership between the city
and the Southwest Florida Water
Management District to provide
a unique recreational opportunity
through the improved Clam Bayou
Estuary. It was also included as a
part of the Greater Childs Park Area
Initiative that was developed in 2007
to improve the quality of life in the
greater Childs Park neighborhood.

"We have worked very hard to
create a trail system that meets
the needs of our community. This
section is important because of the
many young people here in the
Childs Park area," said Mayor Rick
Baker. The trail will provide access
to many neighborhood assets such as
the Childs Park Lake, Childs Park
Recreation Center, Queen Dennis
Park, and Thurgood Marshall
Fundamental Middle School.

Debbie Scherer, Gulfport and Il-
linois: My son and daughter-in-law
and their two children, plus a half
that I just found out about, will be
coming from eastern Pennsylvania to
my house in Illinois to spend Christ-
mas with us. My twin daughters will
also be there; in fact, there will be
about 25 people there, including my
brother, sister, nieces and nephews
and friends with their children. It's a
big tradition in our family. It started
with my grandparents. I do all the
cooking, and everybody else does the
cleanup, so it works out perfect. I'm
cooking turkey, ham, mashed po-
tatoes, sweet potatoes and veggies.
Then we'll have desserts, desserts
and more desserts! I just found out
that I have a new grandchild on the
way; I guess that's my Christmas
present this year. What a great gift!"

Dan Wilkins, parents Mary Ann
and Glenn Wilkins and son Jon-
athan, Ruskin: lMy mom and dad
are here visiting from Michigan and
we're going to celebrate at my house
in Ruskin, just the four of us. It will
be my son Jonathan's first Christ-
mas tree and the first with his grand-
parents. My Mom will cook dinner;
turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing
sweet potatoes and fresh cranberry
sauce. Then we'll let Jonathan open
his presents. It's going to be just an
old fashioned family Christmas."

Kelly Mascollo, Gulfport: "I'm go-
ing home to Connecticut to visit fam-
ily for two weeks over the Christmas
break. I'm a pre-school teacher so I
have some time off for the holidays.
I'm taking my dog Houdini with me.
There should be about 10 of us; it will
be a real Italian Christmas. My dad
is Sicilian, so we always have sea-
food, pasta and wine, lots of wine!
My grandparents, brother and sis-
ter will also be there, so it should be
fun. I asked for clothes and money
for Christmas; let's hope that "Santa"
comes through..."

Richard Martell, Montreal: M y wife Irene, mother-in-law Laurice and I are
visiting friends here in the St. Pete area. We rented a condo in the same complex
as them until April, so we could get away from all the Montreal cold weather and
snow. We'll spend Christmas day with our friends; there will be about 15 of us
and they'll be cooking all the food. I think that's better. Every guest then has to
bring a dish. Since they eat mostly vegetarian we're bringing a spinach pie that
my wife will make. Last year was the first time we visited here and we really
liked it so we're back again this year. The weather on Gulfport Beach is beautiful
and a lot warmer than Canada."

Gulfport Centennial
Musical Celebration!
It isn't every city that kicks off
its centennial celebration with an
original musical written especially for
its birthday, but that is exactly what
Gulfport Florida is doing. A little
over a year and a half ago, a Gulfport
resident and well-known playwright,
Gil Perlroth, teamed up with Gulfport
Historian, Lynne Brown to create
a never-before-seen musical. This
tremendous effort on both their parts
is premiering January 9 and will run

through January 24th, 2010 at the
Catherine A. Hickman Theater in a
play entitled, Gulfport: The Musical.
The play is a joint effort by the
City of Gulfport and the Gulfport
Community Players to kick off the City
of Gulfport's Centennial Celebration.
It is based upon some of the many
historical highlights of the unique
City of Gulfport, Florida.
Under of very able direction of
Daniel Harris and musical direction
by Bill Bryant and backed by a cast of
26 actors, this play is a history of the
ups and downs of this small Florida

coastal town by the bay. And quite a
story it is!
Many years ago, The Great Hurricane
of 1921 destroyed and changed the
character of Gulfport forever. What
was once a small fishing village was
wiped out by that storm. People
were starving and there seemed to
be no way to make a living. Then
later prohibition arrived, and what
was left of the fishermen turned to
bootlegging. Time marched on to 1980
when undesirables virtually took over
the waterfront.
Today Gulfport has the feel of a
small town, unlike some larger cities
around the state. Gulfport is an
extremely laid back community and
the residents like it that way. To coin
the old phrase, "If it ain't broke, don't
fix it".
The Gulfport Centennial Celebration
of events will continue through 2010,
but, for now, enjoy a bit of history
and see a great musical about this
very special city by the bay known as
the Gateway to the Gulf. Tickets are
on sale now for just $15 each. You
can purchase tickets in Gulfport at
Eileen's Resale Shop at 5401 Gulfport
Boulevard S., The Gulfport Casino
Ballroom at 5501 Shore Boulevard S.,
The Gulfport ('h.iImli.- of Commerce
at 2808 58 Sreet S. and The Beach
Bazaar at 3115 Beach Boulevard S.
Get yours while you still can! For

WOW, WHAT A YEAR! We are facing a very uncertain
time period of economic, uncertainties. A REAL
ESTATE BUBBLE BURST, BILLION DOLLAR BAILOUT
OF BANKS, INSURANCE COMPANIES, AUTO MANU-
FACTURERS AND THIS IS JUST THE BEGINNING.
NEWS OF IRAQ HAS TAKEN A BACK-SEAT AS WE TRY
TO TIE OFF THE BLEEDING HERE AT HOME. IT
SEEMS, JUST GET IN LINE, WITH YOUR TIN CUP! IF
YOU ARE NOT FRIGHTENED, YOU ARE IN THE MINOR-
ITY. MOST AMERICANS are IN shock over the events in
the past 12 months, as they should be, scared and
concerned, well you should be. If you believe half of
what you read and throw in some common sense then
is is time to do a full FINANCIAL REVIEW WITH SOME-
ONE WHO YOU FEEL YOU CAN TRUST. Now more than
ever, it is time to turn to a professional to help you
plan your estate and seek tax advantaged income
sources and safe alternatives. That is our specialty at
Conley Financial Services, Inc. Mr. Conley has helped
literally thousands of people from all walks of life,
manage their retirement and preretirement needs by
using conservative methods.

IT'S TIME TO HOLD ON AND GET BACK TO THE BASICS.

1. The only way to accumulate wealth is to live within
your means, and possibly cut back due to huge
increases in the cost of living.
2. Basic financial planning has become more sophisti-
cated and yet people have to invest conservative due to
low bank interest rates while banks and oil companies
make record profits.
3. I recommend that retirees invest prudently and have
a comfort level of how their money will be working for
them with the investments they now have.
4. With this chaos, we as a society have become desen-
sitized and have forgotten to realize history repeats itself.
5. I recommend finding a qualified Financial Advisor
who will have your best interests at heart.

At Conley Financial Services, we believe an educated
client is the best client, so my clients have a comfort
level knowing their money is working as hard for them as
they did for it.

Working with a Financial Advisor should be strongly
considered. At Conley Financial Services we can
recommend an accountant for tax advice as well as an
attorney for legal advice.

Trips are from 9am-4pm each Friday unless otherwise indicated. All trips leave from the Community Center.

By Matthew Margolis
Holiday Tunes for
Dog Lovers
Seems everyone's humming a holi-
day tune. Here's a dog lover's take
on some all-time favorites:
It Must Have Been the Mistletoe:
No, this song isn't about a dog that
ate the mistletoe and spent Christ-
mas Day with the vet. But it could
be. Mistletoe and poinsettias are
toxic to dogs (and cats). The results
of ingestion range from oral irrita-
tion to respiratory distress to gastro-
intestinal upset, including diarrhea,
vomiting and the potential for dehy-
dration that follows such symptoms.
Mistletoe poisoning is rare, but if
consumed in large quantities, it can
be fatal.

Sleigh Ride: This one always gets
me. I hear it and am compelled to
remind parents everywhere that
children should not be allowed to
harness the family dog and have
him drag them around the yard on
a mock sled. It's fun for the kid, not
for the dog.
O Christmas Tree: Oh, where to be-
gin? The traditional Christmas tree,
with its lights and tinsel and delicate
ornaments, is too much temptation
for some canines. Whether slurping
the sap-infested water meant for
the tree, barking at flashing lights
or pawing at shiny strands of tinsel
and dangling glass balls, Christmas
trees and dogs go together like mis-
tletoe and former lovers.
Burn Little Candles: This sweet
Chanukah song for kids also serves
as a reminder for dog owners that

I "-- HO U E O o o.

flickering candles should never be
left within reach of a wagging tail.
Fire of any kind requires adult su-
pervision. And remember to unplug
those tree lights at night and when
you aren't home.
Jingle Bells, Silver Bells, Carol of
the Bells: Bells, bells, bells! They're
enough to drive a pooch straight to
the spiked eggnog. If your dog is
shy, timid or nervous around noise,
keep the bells to a minimum -- and
not attached to his collar.
Hard Candy Christmas: A holiday
season without sweets is like Dolly
Parton without the twang. But sug-
ar and dogs don't mix. Chocolate is
toxic to most dogs, and candy canes
and hard candy are simply indigest-
ible objects for them to potentially
choke on. Keep the candy dishes
and boxes of chocolates safely be-
yond the reach of your four-legged
companions.
Baby, It's Cold Outside -- And yes,
the pooch still needs a walk, a romp
and a good old-fashioned game of
fetch. This tune should serve as a
warning to anyone thinking of get-
ting or giving a puppy for Christ-
mas: A puppy means many, many
trips outside each day and night,
come rain, sleet or snow.
I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus
-- This song speaks to me for reasons
that have nothing to do with dogs.
Deck the Halls: If you must deck
your halls with boughs of real holly,
take precautions to keep the leaves
and berries off the floors and away
from pets. Otherwise, you just
might falalalala all the way to the
emergency animal hospital. Holly
gets its own spot on this list because
it is potentially fatal if ingested by
your dog (or cat). Decorate with faux
holly to keep things jolly.
Consider these tips and tunes my
holiday gift to you. Our pets are a
part of our families. Taking the time
to implement a handful of precau-
tions this holiday season will help
ensure that the most wonderful time
of the year stays that way.

Greyhound Foster Homes Needed
Meet Plaza, a black and white male who is adapting well
to his foster home. Greyhound Pets of America has a ken-
nel full of over 50 retired racers who need to learn the
ropes of living in a home instead of a kennel cage. Can
you help us out? GPA provides food, flea and heartworm
medicine and any vet visits, if necessary. We can even
supply a crate to help with the transition. In addition to
providing TLC, you need to take the dog to a "Meet & Greet" once a month at
a designated pet-supply store which is a fun gathering of greyhound owners
and foster families. To become a foster home, please call Greyhound Pets of
America on (727) 595-7852, visit our website: greyhoundpets.com, or see us at
the Tyrone PetSmart on most Sundays from noon to 2 p.m.

Rescue Group Needs
Foster Homes for Dogs
Florida Doggie Paws Rescue needs
more volunteers and foster homes
for small to medium breed dogs.
Their mission is to responsibly
rescue, spay/neuter, rehabilitate,
foster and find permanent loving
homes for unwanted, abandoned and
abused dogs in the community and
throughout the State of Florida.
There are many advantages to
fostering a dog. Foster homes are
not responsible for any vet bills or
expenses. The rescue will transport
the dog and take care of any
veterinary needs. The rescue has
a trainer available for you to use.
In addition, they act as a support
system that you can call anytime -
day or night, if you have questions
about the dog's behavior, health,
etc... You are not alone! But the best
reason of all to foster is the reward
of knowing that you saved a life.
Please fillout a volunteer application
at www.floridadoggiepaws.com or
call Florida Doggie Paws at 813-
283-1695 and open your heart and
your home to one of these poor dogs
that just needs a place to stay for a
few weeks until they can find their
forever home.
Florida Doggie Paws Rescue is an
all volunteer, foster based 501 (c) 3
Organization. All donations are tax
deductible.

Gulfport, Florida Tampa
Bays Boaters Secret
Submitted by Dennis Frain, Harbormaster
Gulfport, Florida offers many
amenities that fit the needs of boating
enthusiasts. Situated on Boca Ciega
Bay it offers a protected basin from
the Gulf of Mexico. Several world
class racing regattas have utilized
the launch conditions from the
beach with wide stretches of open
waterfront for racing. Most recently,
the Formula 16 Global Challenge
was hosted by the Gulfport Yacht
Club November 10-14.
The City Council just approved that
the 15 guest slips at the Gulfport
Municipal Marina allow dockage for
up to a two week period of stay. This
Marina is fully equipped to handle the
requirements of distance sailors and
is only blocks away from a vibrant
downtown with shops, restaurants
and services. Local businesses also
provide a full compliment of marine
services.
The Gulfport Chamber of Commerce
supplies complimentary boater
packets with helpful information
on where to find services. If needed,
the Town has two Inns for overnight
accommodations the Sea Breeze
Manor Bed and Breakfast Inn and
the Peninsula Inn and spa.
For day trippers, at the rear of the
Gulfport Casino Ballroom there is
ample free dockage for dinghies to
large vessels for up to eight hours
and within walking distance to shops
and restaurants
The Boca Ciega Yacht Club has
often worked in conjunction with
other clubs to form raft-ups just
off the coast. Gulfport Beach has
pavilions and other amenities for
group events.
From an individual sailor to groups
looking for new places to explore,
Gulfport is an inviting host for
boaters. With three yacht clubs
within its city limits: Pasadena Yacht
and Country Club, Gulfport Yacht
Club and the Boca Ciega Yacht Club
there is representation for all types
of watercrafts.
For more information on what
Gulfport offers contact Dennis Frain,

This Holiday Give
the Gift of Giving
Gulf Coast Community Care needs
volunteers age 30 and older for its
mentoring program. Volunteers are
matched with children who need a
positive adult role model.
Many of the children are in kinship
care or live with a single parent who
is going to school and working. There
is a special need for volunteers for
children of all ages. Volunteers give
the gift of time to one child and are
provided social events and support
by agency staff. No experience is
necessary. There are no costs.
Volunteers spend a few hours a week
in simple activities such as reading,
fishing, baking, teaching a craft, or
visiting a park with a child. We have
children throughout Pinellas County
waiting for mentors!
To learn how you can make a lasting
difference in the life of a child, call

St. Petersburg Audubon

Society Awards Kurt Zuelsdorf
Kurt Zuelsdorf grew up as a nature tour guide for over
20 years at Horicon Marsh Boat Tours in Wisconsin. After
living for 18 years in Gulfport, he dreamed of running a
business that would provide kayak rentals and tours in the
area. His daughter led him to the perfect spot; Clam Bayou
Nature Park, in his own back yard in Gulfport.
After visiting the Bayou, he realized it had a big problem
- it was choked with years upon years of trash and debris.
But behind the trash, Kurt saw something that most peo-
ple didn't; a vision of a pristine ecosystem filled with birds
and wildlife.
How could one person transform a trash dump? By inspir-
ing others to share his vision.
In 2006 Kurt decided to offer a free kayak rental to anyone
who brought back a bag filled with trash from the Bayou.
Calling his program "Bring Back the Bayou", his creative
plan created an ecosystem of its own a "Green Machine"
composed of thousands of moving parts, each part remov-
ing its bag of trash. Like a steady swarm of ants, his ma-
chine has removed over 100,000 pounds of human detritus
from Clam Bayou, including shopping carts, lawn furni-
ture, tires, bicycles, golf balls, and even motorcycles and
sofas. One of the hardest things to remove was a 500-gallon
automatic Dumpster.
And the Bayou is indeed coming back. After years of prep-
aration and delay, in 2010 SWFWMD will install a storm-
water treatment system which should dramatically reduce
the flow of trash into the Bayou, while offering land-based
visitors improved wildlife viewing opportunities. But the
Machine still has work to do. "The volunteer effort is an
important part of the overall strategy and management of
Clam Bayou," said Brandt Henningsen, SWFWMD's chief
environmental scientist. "Once the stormwater and resto-
ration project is finished, maintenance will still be an im-
portant part of the overall plan because some new trash
will still make it into the bayou."
"That's what's going to keep the awareness up the abil-
ity for people to see it. The more people that DO see it, the
cleaner it can be" said Kurt.

We

Last year,
Kurt was able
to inspire 700
kids by either
bringing them
out to the Bay-
ou or going to
visit them. He's
constantly try-
ing to encour-
age recycling
including the
use of reusable
shopping bags.
His inspira-
tion for the
program is the
birds that live
and nest in the
mangroves.
"It's all for the
birds," he said. "After a major cleanup, I stood back and
watched," Kurt says. "The herons, the cranes, and the ibises
were sitting up in the treetops waiting for us to leave. The
pelicans were diving. The fish were jumping. It's nothing
short of a miracle to watch that happen."
"What he's done in Clam Bayou is exceptional. He's brought
a focus to that area, and he's done it by bringing people to-
gether," said Gulfport City Commissioner Michelle King.
Kurt's mission is to "promote green living while educating
people on the importance of preserving Earth's resources".
Kurt has already won several awards for his (and his vol-
unteer's) work, including:
2007 Field and Stream "Hero of Conservation" award.
S2008 Tourism Award from Coastal Living Magazine.
2008 Creative Loafing's "Best Environmental Outing"
award.
In 2009, for his perseverance, creativity and the huge im-
provement he's made to both Clam Bayou and the lives of
people who might otherwise never experience it, the St. Pe-
tersburg Audubon Society names him Conservationist of the
Year.

iA city government?
Email your request to News@theGabber.com

By Cathy Salustri
City of Gulfport
Q: Why is the city having a public records town hall meeting? Is this re-
quired by law?
A: According to Gulfport City Clerk Lesley DeMuth, council requested that
she organize two town hall meetings, one about public records and another
dealing with the Sunshine Law. There are no laws that say that a city must
have such meetings.
Tonight's (Thursday) meeting will deal with public records. People can ask
questions following a presentation from Steve Lewis, a records and informa-
tion management consultant. Lewis teaches public records law and records
management for the Florida Institute of Government, an organization that
teaches government officials. His experience includes teaching city clerks
about public records law.
The meeting, which runs from 6:30 to 8:30 tonight at the Catherine Hickman
Theater, will cost the city $300 not including staff time.

Tuesday nights with Harry are rapidly becoming a jam session again. Last week we had Harry on guitar, Denny on

Dee LeBlonc does karaoke Monday nights. She has a strong following. Wednesday is our special dinner offerings.
Wednesday nights we have Frank Caine who sings and does some karaoke using his very rare collection of karaoke

His creativity will be readily apparent.

LAST WEEK'S ANSWER:
Outboard motor races were a popular
feature of waterfront entertainment in
the late 1920s. Mack Brooks in the "Miss
Gulfport" was the perpetual winner of the
outboard class, while Arthur Mann held
his own in the fishing boat class, followed
closely by Louie Roberts. But the little
guy piloting the boat in last week's pic-
ture was Winton McMillen, son of the Ca-
sino cook. When he wasn't riding around
in a speedboat, he was diving off the pier
to the horror of tourists who didn't realize
he'd been swimming in the Bay since the
first year of his life.

We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy holiday season and would

Expand your Boating
Knowledge and Skills
The America's Boating Course
presented by the St. Petersburg Sail
and Power Squadron is available to
anyone 12 or older. Instruction is
free. Cost of the materials is $25 per
family. Classes are held once a week
(two hours each Monday), for seven
weeks. Completion of this course
will enable the student to skipper
a boat with confidence. Because
most skippers will attend only one
safety course, we believe it should
be as comprehensive as possible.
Plus, graduates are eligible to join
the squadron and take advantage
of all the other great educational
opportunities afforded to SPSPS
members. The class starts Monday,
January 11 from 7-9 p.m. at the
St. Petersburg Sailing Center, 250
Second Ave SE Demens Landing,
St. Petersburg. Pre-registration is
required. You may do it online at
www.boating-stpete.org or call 727-
498-4001. The course chairman will
contact you for confirmation.

RUSH'S Reality

A satirical look at the world around us.

Insurance Reform Bill
We Americans love our pets.
Pet supplies and medical
care combined are about a
trillion dollar industry every month,
and that's not counting the holidays.
How many pets will have a stocking
and chew toys under the tree? I per-
sonally have had a dog most of life,
and while I can readily grasp the no-
tion that "dogs are people, too!", it
concerns me that we often seem to put
animal welfare above that of our fel-
low humans.
I see press releases all the time
about how the community should
come together to help the homeless
animals. No one seems to care about
their homeless owners. For every PSA
looking for foster or adoptive homes
for children, there are 10 looking for
the same homes for pets. I might be
more sympathetic to the plight of our
furry friends if my disabled husband
could get physical therapy rather
than seeing on the news about Winter
the dolphin getting a prosthetic tail in
Clearwater.
I've heard that Hillsborough Coun-
ty Animal Control does some pretty
cool things. They actually have a food
bank for pet owners, recognizing that
shelters are overwhelmed and many
pets could remain in their homes with
their loved ones with just a little help.
Support the caregiver even a bit and
you end up supporting all those who
depend on them. What a great idea!
There was recently an Amnesty Day
for owners of exotic pets. Why not
have Amnesty Day for those owners
who are behind on their license and/
or vaccinations?
Owning a pet is a huge responsibil-
ity, one almost akin to having a child,
emphasis on "almost".
I had my old dog to the vet a few
months back for her annual exam and
county license. At that visit I was
told that she was overweight, she
had tartar on her teeth which need
to be cleaned ASAP, the beginnings
of cataracts and counseled about a
a "senior" blood test that would tell
them everything about how her in-
sides were doing. That blood test

By Anne Rush

Passes the (Dog) House
alone cost $200. My problem with the
vet is that they are salespeople after
all, and they often guilt you or look at
you condescendingly if you decide not
to order the expensive tests or get the
latest treatments or vaccines known
to dog (er, man). They tried valiantly
to get me to have my dog vaccinated
for kennel cough. I said "She never
goes to a kennel." They inquired hope-
fully "What about the dog park?". I
responded "No, she doesn't go there
either."
I have reduced the amount of the diet
senior dog food I feed her and exer-
cise her more, but she'll get her teeth
cleaned when I can afford to have my
pesty molar pulled and I'll follow up
on her cataracts when I get my bifocal
prescription glassed made. Mind you,
I haven't had my own annual exam or
blood work done for two years because
I have no health insurance and can't
afford to private pay, but let it be said
on my tombstone that at least I was
responsible for my pet.
Still, I picked up some brochures for
pet insurance from the brochure rack
(four to be exact) and was mired in
fine print and asterisks and payment
plans and actuary tables. This is big
business. I wonder what it would be
like to actually try to file a claim.
Average annual cost of owning a dog
is $1600. A cat is $1200. If we truly
believe that pets are people, too, then
each and every one of them should be
considered as dependents and we tax-
paying pet owners ought to be able to
deduct the cost on our taxes.
Why, we should have the equivalent
of SS#'s for pets. Now when it comes
to cats, a 123-45-6789 number would
have to be suffixed with something
like a number or letter (i.e., 123-45-
6789-1 or maybe 123-45-6789-A) so we
could keep track of which life they're
on. And from an insurance stand-
point, when a cat reaches say, 123-45-
6789-H, their premiums should go up
and they should be denied life insur-
ance.
W1A i1i take it a step further? What
if Medicaid became Peticaid? What
if Medicare became Peticare? How

widely would that be supported and
who would pay for it?
We're not only concerned about our
living pets, for Godssakes, we're con-
cerned about the diets of the gosh
darned animals that we plan to eat!
On the menu for a local restaurant,
the entrees were described as "grain
fed chicken with no additives" and
"farm-raised, chemical-free" shrimp.
I know what you're thinking about
my dog. I had no business adopting
her years ago when times were good
any more than people should have
children if they can't afford to take
care of them. And so if now I can't
"properly" care for her, I should give
her up. I may feel a Pam Bondi nip-
ping at my heels, but not on your life.
Not because I'm selfish and I don't
want better for her. But because in
this economically challenged home,
she is happy, comfortable and loved.
And I so want that for whichever one
of us happens to go first.

Singing for Salvation

By Cathy Salustri

Retired Salvation Army
Captain John Jones has
strong feelings about
the proper way to ring a
Salvation Army bell.
"Some of the people ring
this thing so hard, and they
don't have to," he says as
he demonstrates. His hand
makes a slight movement
and his bell responds with
a gentle tinkle. Although he
has perfected the art of the
bell, Jones doesn't ring his
own much.
"The bell is just a nuisance,"
he says, then quickly adds,
"I'm joking. It's a nuisance to
me because I'm singing."
When Jones, 85, takes mans
his bright red kettle every
day outside the Dolphin
Village Publix on St. Pete
Beach, he starts to sing.
"I sing just about all the
time," he says. "People will
ask me, 'How long have
you been singing,' and I tell
them, 'I've been singing 85
years. My mother thought I
was crying, but I was really
singing'."
Mr. Jones' lifelong love
affair with the Salvation
Army began in south St.
Petersburg 81 years ago.
Born in St. Petersburg in
April 1924, Jones attended
the Methodist church in
Williams Park until he was
four. One Sunday morning
his father didn't feel well
enough to drive the family
downtown.
"Daddy said, 'Why don't
you go up there to that little
Salvation Army place?' and
all us kids fell in love with
it," he remembers. The
family started attending the
Kaw Gardens Mission.
His first real memory of
how the Salvation Army
worked is interwoven with
his younger brother.
"I had a baby brother,
William Everett. He had
spinal meningitis, and

back then there wasn't
much they could do for us.
I can remember seeing my
mother on the corner of the
porch, holding him. We were
crawling around on the floor,
trying to make him laugh.
"He died. I remember
seeing these people in dark
clothing. They conducted the
funeral."
Jones became a Junior
Soldier in the Salvation
Army when he was six and,
ashe says, he "accepted Jesus
Christ." He stayed with the
Salvation Army throughout
his education. He graduated
from St. Petersburg High
School in 1942 and joined
the Army's 96th portable
hospital.
"It was like Mash, but
it wasn't that funny," he
says. As part of this unit he
removed the wounded from
the front lines of battle and
provided triage for those
wounded until they could
transport them to safer
ground. His unit rescued
wounded soldiers in the
Gilbert andMarshallIslands,
Saipan, and Okinawa.
After the war Mr. Jones
opened Johnnie Jones
Plumbing. He remained
active in the Salvation Army
and he kept singing. He
sold the business in 1972
and became a Salvation
Army minister. He got a job
working at Home Depot.
"I even make up songs," he
says as he mans his kettle
outside the Publix. "You see
those birds?' He gestures at
the birds sitting on power
lines along Gulf Boulevard.
With that, he bursts into
song again, ending with "...
the flowers in Publix lend
their hue."
At a Home Depot meeting one
of his managers asked him
to sing, and Jones responded
with an impromptu song:
"Today will be happy,
Today will be glad.
Today will be the best day

Salvation Army Captain, John Jones, 85, has been part of the Salvation

Army since he was six years old.
Home Depot ever had!"
He's retired from Home
Depot and the Salvation
Army now. He takes it
slower, he says, partly for
his wife's sake.
"I'm 85-plus. I guess I owe it
to my wife to take it easy," he
says. His wife, Elsie Jones,
is a retired major in the
Salvation Army. She'll fly out
Friday to see her daughter
in Kansas City. Jones will
spend Christmas with his
two daughters, a brother-
in-law, and his niece. Until
then, though, he intends to
spend his days manning his
kettle and singing.
"I get a big joy out of doing
it," he says. His clear blue
eyes crinkle, and except
for the beard his face is the
stereotypical Santa Claus
when he smiles. A young
mother walks out of the
grocery store with her two
children. The young boy
pauses and stares at Jones as

he sings. Minutes later, they
return and he approaches
Jones shyly. At Jones'
encouragement, he takes the
bell and rings it-gently as
Jones sings him Jingle Bells.
The boy smiles, still staring
in awe. He hands back the
bell.
Jones just keeps singing.
The Salvation Army's
Kettle Campaign began in
1891 when Salvation Army
Captain Joseph McFee
wanted to have a Christmas
dinner for poor people and
needed to find a way to pay
for the food. He set out a crab
pot to collect money. Today,
the Salvation Army uses
the money in the kettles to
give needy families grocery
checks or food baskets, and
last year they provided
meals for roughly 5 million
people in the United States.
The Salvation Army does not
set out kettles on Sunday.

Excerpts heard at the December 15, 2009

Gulfport City Council Meeting

Public Comment & Council Quotes

John Freiburger held up this sign, which read "TOXIC"
during Councilwoman Judy Ryerson's turn to speak
during the "New Business" portion of Tuesday night's
council meeting. He continued to hold this sign up through
councilmember Sam Henderson and Mayor Mike Yakes'
portion of the New Business session.
At the time he held up the sign he gave no indication as to
the meaning of the sign. However, earlier in the meeting
he spoke his concern of the air quality in the city.

"If you need a quote, 'Where's the good-looking
attorney from last time?" -Jim Greenwald, about the
appearance of a different interim city attorney from the
last council meeting

"I think a lot of people are getting an ordinance
confused with... what might happen later."-Council
member Michele King

"I have no problem with that except all the workshops
are happening at 10 or 11 o'clock in the morning...I
hope maybe you'll alter the rules to that when you get
to that point so people can freely discuss this thing."
-Bob Newcomb, about council's decision to workshop the
proposed bench sign (Ordinance 2009-16)

"Hi, my name is Dottie, cherry-crusted nutbar."
-Dottie Wolksi, who then proceeded to thank council for
their work over the past year.

"I'm going to read to you an item that you have
before you and I am raising this because the paper
that is published here each Thursday, which I is
why I read the Gulfport Watchdog."-Al Davis

"I just want to know what the status of the safety
director." -John Freiburger

"At this time I have no intention of going outside the
organization."-City Manager Jim O'Reilly, in response
to Mr. Freiburger's question

"I think dredging works elsewhere; I don't know why
Swiftmud has made the determination that it's not
going to work on Clam Bayou."-Jerry O'Reegan

"It's critical that we don't have naked women on
our benches, that we don't have Wal-Mart on our
benches." -Rob Case, past president of the Gulfport
Lions

"Just chaining up their boat doesn't do anything
because its just tying up a slip and they're still not
paying for it,"-Vice-Mayor Bob Worthington, about the
way the city currently handles boat owners who fail to
pay their slip rent

"Operation Santa is still looking for people to
adopt families. We have more families than ever
this year and this year they need a lot more help."
Councilwoman Michele King

"Get out and vote. Nobody wants to win by only 15%
of the people. "-Councilwoman Judy Ryerson, who holds
the only seat that has more than one candidate in the
2010 election

Bird Sanctuary
Gets Approval for
New Flight Pen
By Kate Bradshaw

There were times during the mid-
afternoon meeting where Michelle
Simoneau thought the Redington
Shores Planning and Zoning Board
wasn't going to let her employer
build a new bird cage. The Suncoast
Seabird Sanctuary, the nonprofit for
which she serves as a public relations
officer, had sought permission from
the city to build a flight aviary for
injured eagles, osprey and owls. The
board discussed the new structure
last Thursday.
"This is our last piece of land,"
Simoneau told the board. "We need
to use it for birds of prey."
To build the proposed 800 square
foot building, the 501C-3 needed two
variances and approval of a new site
plan. One variance addressed the
proposed structure's setback and the

other the structure's nonconforming
use.
Board members challenged Simoneau
on a variety of the proposal's aspects
as well as the sanctuary's eligibility
for being grandfathered into the
current town plan.
A number of people gave public
testimony in favor of the flight pen,
which would give rehabilitated birds
the ability to exercise their wings
before they are released into the
wild.
"These are minimum standards
for wildlife rehabilitation," said
one speaker, an employee of the
sanctuary. "Raptors are not colonial
birds. They'll actually kill each
other."
Board member Fred Hajjar, who
eventually voted in favour of the
move, gave a response that elicited
a collective gasp among the audience
members who packed the room.
"That'll solve the space problem," he
said.
Fred Alpers, who had a veterinary
practice on Treasure Island, told the

board that the sanctuary is a vital
resource for the community, and
that, for birding enthusiasts he has
met while travelling abroad, it puts
the Pinellas beaches on map.
"They know where Indian Rocks and
Redington Shores are because of the
sanctuary," he said.
While nobody spoke against the
structure at the meeting, there were
several letters expressing concern
over it. Board member Bonnie
Stein read a letter from a man who
lives adjacent the property, who
complained about past disagreements
he has had with sanctuary founder
and director Ralph Heath.
While some board members said that
the complaints contained in the letter
were not related to the issue at hand,
Stein said that they weigh in on the
question of whether the sanctuary
serves as a good neighbor, which can
factor into whether a variance can be
issued.
Board members contemplated
granting permission to build the
shed due to the uniqueness of the
circumstances.
"This is quite a compelling argument,"
said board member Bob Phillips. "I
have used the Suncoast (Seabird)
Sanctuary. I have taken several birds
there."
Eventually, the board voted 4-1 to
allow the two variances and the
site plan with the condition that
the sanctuary beautifies the area
surrounding the aviary.
Stein provided the sole "no" vote on
each of the items, citing the board's
need to strictly adhere to code.
"This board has to look at the code,"
she said. "If there's something wrong
with the code, then that can be looked
at in the future."
The town commission will vote on the
issue at its January 6th meeting.

The Eight: Reindeer Monologues

By Cathy Salustri

After a brief stint in Tampa,
Gypsy Productions returns to the
Pinellas side of the bay with The
Eight: Reindeer Monologues at the
Gulfport Community Players' Back
Door Theatre. Gypsy traditionally
mounts alternative, less traditional
theatrical productions, so it was no
shock to see that Artistic Director
Trevor Keller decided to produce
The Eight this Christmas season.
The Eight: Reindeer Monologues
bills itself as a comedy, and it
does have a dark sort of humor.
Unlike other departures from the
usual holiday fare, though, people
do not leave the show laughing
and humming a happy Christmas
song. This show deals with mature
themes that include but are not
limited to rape, sexual harassment,
and reindeer pedophilia. Be advised:
it is not a show for children, and
when you go see it you should not go
expecting a lighthearted romp. Each
reindeer gets a chance to tell his or

qhrr""nr

her story, and the darkness of their
tales that expose their less-than-
stellar existence have humor in the
mix as well.
When producing a show that
challenges our holiday mores, the
show has to be close to perfect for
the company to pull it off. Most
shows, sadly, are not perfect, and
this one is no exception. However, it
has, without a doubt, a few shining
stars.
While the first few monologues
offer little in the way of dynamic
performances, Brick livens up the
stage with her wonderful (if not a
bit predictable) acting. As a brassy
Blitzen, she infuses life and energy
into her role. Her humor and timing
is a welcome relief, like letting out a
huge breath you don't realize you're
holding, and if she occasionally goes
over the top, well, we can forgive
her.
Daniel Harris blows the audience
away with what is unquestionably
the strongest performance in this

ensemble cast. His portrayal of
Comet doesn't necessarily endear
his character to the audience, but his
acting does. He's a strong actor who
should appear on more stages. As
a side note, he will direct Gulfport:
The Musical that opens next month.
If his directing ability comes close to
his acting talent he should turn out
a fine show.
Kelly Sardifias' portrayal of Vixen
comes as a welcome relief after the
incredibly heavy and depressing
monologue delivered by Tom
Campbell, who plays Donner. If
Sardifias, like Brick, occasionally
goes over the top, it is also forgivable
in light of her energy and the thought
she's put into her character.
Director Trevor Keller, as usual,
adds his creative flourishes to the
preshow. As a director and the
company's artistic director, Keller
usually has a vision that transcends
the show onstage. He has a gift
for considering the entirety of
the theatrical experience. In this
production, his reindeer mingle with
the crowd before the show, giving
them a taste of what's to come.
Little touches like this are what
make Keller's productions a delight
to attend.
Finally, although Gypsy Productions
has no permanent home, they make
a wonderful addition to Gulfport at
the Players' Back Door Theatre. The
space, much like Gypsy, is less than
traditional, and no community will
receive alternative theatre better
than Gulfport. This melding of
Gypsy and Gulfport seems a natural
marriage, and hopefully they will
offer more to the Gulfport audiences
in the coming months.
The Eight: Reindeer Monologues
runs tonight (Thursday), Friday and
Saturday evenings at 8. There is
also a 2 p.m. matinee this Sunday.
Tickets cost $20, except for tonight,
which is two tickets for the price of
one. Call (727) 644-7077 for more

Girls Show Brute Strength Not Just for the Boys
'Ia

Freshman guard Alexis Ungro brings the ball up the court with Gibbs hot on her heels. She
led the team in scoring with 16 points.
Bogie Girl's Varsity basketball was all about the physical last night as they
beat a determined Gibbs High 63-43. Both teams played aggressively and
there were lots of elbows and turnovers, as well as a lot of missed shot op-
portunities...
The game was important because it was a District game; Bogie is now 5-0 in
Districts and 8-1 overall.
Bogie is a young team this year, with four freshman and two girls moved up
from JV. Star Guard Senior Latavia Dempsey (12 points) has returned for her
final season; a full athletic scholarship awaits her next year from FAU. Both
she and freshman guard Alexis Ungro shared in the points scored, with Ungro
leading last night with 16 for the game.
"We're a real young team this year," said Coach William White. "But Alexis
(the freshman) has really played well; she's very strong right now. The other
girls on the team have all stepped up their game. I think that fact that we have
a really deep team, with eleven players, allows us to stay fresh in the game.
We still have fight left in the second half. Last night Gibbs only had five girls
scoring. We just wore them down."

I Keith Sanders, from the law
office of Andre Keith Sanders, P.A.
He says that for two reasons. First,
he says his more than 17 years of ex-
perience as an attorney specializing
in handling "literally thousands" of
bankruptcies means that he has dealt
with virtually any kind of problem
or issue that might arise with them.
And, secondly, he had to file a Chap-
ter 13 bankruptcy himself a few years
ago. He says that experience makes
him very sensitive to the kinds of
things people face when making the
difficult decision to file.
"Most attorneys have never been
in a situation where they have been
worried about how to keep the lights
on, but I have been there myself so I
can really relate to what people are
going through," said Sanders. "Plus,
many people are very embarrassed
when they come to me, but I when I
tell them how embarrassing it was for
me to have to stand in front of judges
and colleagues who knew me and go
through the process myself, that usu-
ally helps to put people more at ease
and understand that I have been there
and done that MYSELF."
'You know, in 99 percent of bank-
ruptcy cases the situation is that bad
things happen to good people and then
they have gotten into a bad situation.
They have gone through an expensive
health crisis or a divorce or perhaps
someone has just gotten in over their
head with debt. It's very easy in to-
day's consumer driven society for that
to happen," said Sanders.
Sanders offers a free initial consul-
tation with no set time limit on it. "It
might take 20 minutes or it might
take two hours, it just depends of the
client's individual set of circumstanc-
es," he said. "We can meet at their
home or in my office, we can even so
it over the phone if I they can provide
me with the financial information we
need to discuss their situation." Sand-
ers says that he can often offer other
solutions besides bankruptcy such
as re-negotiating payment schedules
with creditors or reorganizing per-
sonal finances. "For example, I often
have people who can avoid bankrupt-
cy if they just get out from under the
burden of a house they can no longer

afford because of a job loss or some
other situation," he noted.
He moved to the Tampa Bay area
in July 2005 from Atlanta where he
was a partner/owner of Hamilton &
Sanders, LLC a firm specializing in
consumer bankruptcy and real es-
tate closings. The firm regularly filed
between 40-60 bankruptcy cases a
month. Prior to that he worked for
three other major law firms in Atlan-
ta from 1992 to 2003. All three firms
specialized in consumer bankruptcy
cases. He began his career as a staff
attorney for the United States Trust-
ee in Atlanta. He is licensed to prac-
tice law in both Florida and Georgia.
"I like what I do because I feel like I
can help people get a fresh start," said
Sanders. "When you have financial
difficulties it can really affect your
entire life. It has negative implica-
tions on you emotionally and it can
even damage or ruin your personal
relationships. I do try and encourage
people to come see me early on, even
if they are just starting to get behind
in payments or feel they are in over
their head. If you can start working
with an attorney from the very start
it can really reduce your stress level
as I can stop harassing creditor calls.
I can also see if we can work out ar-
rangements that a creditor might not
consider when working directly with
my client."
"Since the initial consultation is
free, you really don't have anything
to lose to meet with me and we can

assess your situation and see how
it might be best for you to proceed.
Bankruptcy can be one solution to
getting back on your feet financially,
but it may not be the best or only so-
lution for you. As an experienced pro-
fessional, I can help you sort through
those issues and see what is right for
you," he noted.
Sanders has held a number of semi-
nars and written professional papers
concerning bankruptcy law in gen-
eral, ECF requirements and new is-
sues. He is a former director of the
Bankruptcy Section of the State Bar
of Georgia.
Outside of the courtroom, Sanders
lives in an unusual home in Gulfport
that was one of the featured prop-
erties in last year's Pink Flamingo
Tour of Homes. It has a tree grow-
ing right up through the floor and
up through the ceiling of his kitchen.
He has three dogs and a cat. When
he was living in Atlanta he was very
involved with helping raise funds for
a number of AIDS service organiza-
tions. He is hoping to get involved
with local charitable groups as soon
as possible.
