Lockdown by Boca Ciega High
Last Wednesday afternoon witnesses reported seeing a
person riding a bicycle on the Pinellas Trail and carrying
what looked like rifles. Police notified schools in the area
and locked down facilities pending a search. The person
was last seen heading east in St. Petersburg, and has not
been located as of this writing.
Councilman Bob
Worthington:
"People Wanted Change"
By Cathy Salustri
After the polls closed, Bob
Worthington celebrated with a
few close friends and family at the
American Legion. His victory was
not as pronounced as many had ex-
pected.
Worthington, the incumbent, life-
long Gulfportian, and community
leader with programs like CERT,
faced opposition from newcomer
Angela Lenier. Lenier, a young
mother, did little campaigning and
was relatively unknown before de-
claring her candidacy last year. The
Gabber had difficulty getting a pho-
to of her to run with a candidate ar-
ticle; several residents complained
that they "wouldn't know her if they
saw her." Nonetheless, she received
almost 43% of the votes.
-"I think people wanted change,
and it's understandable," Worth-
ington said as he sipped on Busch
beer at the American Legion. "The
only thing I can tell you is I'm only
one vote on council.
The young lady who ran against me
was looking for the silent majority
rather than the groups* that come
before council." Wothington added
that, while certain special interest
groups do come before council and
get involved, people can also call
him or e-mail him and make their
feelings known if they dQn't want to
speak at a council meeting.
"I. rely on e-mails and telephone
calls, and if I only hear from special
interest groups I have to go with
people that.come before me. I can't
use my own opinion. If I used my
own opinion, I would vote differ-
ently, but I can't do that."
Worthington asked that anyone
who has something they want ad-
dressed should contact him at home
(345-2973) or e-mail him at bwor-
thington@ci.gulfport.fl.us.

Homeless Ordinance
In an effort 'to protect the public
health and safety, St. Petersburg
City Council passed Thursday two
ordinances to help alleviate homeless
encampments that have expanded
on city sidewalks. Both of these ordi-
nances go into effect Feb. 1, and city
officials will be educating the public
on the two new ordinances in the
coming days.
New ordinance, Section 20-82 of the
City Code, prohibits sleeping, lying
or reclining on rights-of-way during
daylight hours in an area df down-
town (Fifth Ave. N. to Fifth Ave. S.
between the waterfront and 16th St.)
and the Grand Central District (First
Ave. N. to First Ave. S. between 16th
St. and 31st St.).
The other ordinance, an amend-
ment to Chapter 8-321 of the City
Code, allows the city to remove prop-
erty on the public right-of-way, city-
wide. Property left on the right-of-
way will be cited and removed after
a 36-hour.period (unless it poses an
immediate health and safety threat;
then it may be removed immediate-
ly). The city has made arrangements
to store property for a period of 30
days. Materials removed for health
and safety reasons will be stored for
seven days. If unclaimed, property
will be disposed of after the allotted
time frame. The city has.worked with
St. Vincent de Paul to provide volun-
tary storage at its facility at 401 15th

Civil Rights Pioneer
Challenges Stetson
Students
Morris Dees, nationally acclaimed
civil rights pioneer and litigator, told
Stetson law students that the fight
for equality is as important now as at
any time in history.
Dees, co-founder of the Southern
Poverty Law Center, presented, "One
Lawyer Can Make a Difference,"
at Stetson's Annual Inns of Court
Banouet and Wm. Reece Smith .Jr.
Distinguished Lecture on Jan. 22.
Dees likened present day prejudice
against Latino workers in the U.S.
to the contempt for Irish immigrants
in the 1800s. He continued by telling
young law students that it is impor-
tant to fight for equality and to follow
the ideals established by Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Dees gave the law
students a call to action, remind-
ing them of the words of Dr. King,
inscribed now on the Civil Rights
Memorial in Montgomery, Ala. In the
struggle for social 'justice, Dr. King
said, "we will not be satisfied until

justice rolls down like waters and
righteousness like a mighty stream."
The Annual Inns of Court is an ad-
opted Stetson tradition that brings
together prominent lawyers, experi-
enced teachers and law students to
exchange ideas, experiences and edu-
cation. The original Inns of Court has
its roots in England, where English
barristers were trained at various
Inns of Court in London, and re-
quired to live in the Inn and immerse
themselves in the law by maintain-
ing close contact with experienced
lawyers.

Veterinary ophthalmologist should
look into dog's eye problem
Q: After having our dog examined
because she had a lot of hair matted
around her left eye, our veterinar-
ian told us that our dog has an ulcer
on her cornea. Although our veteri-
narian could not tell us what caused
this problem originally, she thought
fhat our dog might have scratched
her cornea while running under our
bushes.
We are now worried that our dog
might have to have her eye removed.
If so, will she look gross? Will she be
able to function normally with only
one eye? We are just sick about this
situation.
A: Without seeing your dog and
without having much more infor-
mation, it is impossible to predict
whether or not your dog will even-
tually have to have her left eye re-
moved. However, you should express
your concerns about this to your vet-
erinarian.
If you are not satisfied with the
information that your veterinarian
can provide, you should ask for a re-
ferral to a veterinary ophthalmolo-
gist. You will likely be able to find
a veterinary ophthalmologist at a
large referral veterinary hospital in
a large city in your area or at any
of the teaching hospitals at the 28
veterinary colleges throughout the
United States. Certainly getting a
second opinion is always justified
and doing so will give you peace of
mind that you are doing everything
possible to save your dog's eye.
Your local veterinarian should not
be offended that you want a sec-
ond opinion. Most corneal problems
in dogs start out as simple lesions
such as scratches. Excessive blink-
ing, excessive tearing which leads
to matting, excessive pawing at the

eyes, and avoiding bright lights are
common signs of corneal lesions.
Most simple corneal lesions can be
treated by regular administration of
appropriate eye ointments. Howev-
er, most eye problems left untreated
become very serious problems with-
in a short period of time.
Most dogs with only one eye do
not look gross. Some ophthalmolo-
gists actually install artificial eyes
in dogs to improve their appearanc-
es. Likewise, most dogs with only
one eye function norihally. Having
only one eye should not in any way
change your relationship with your
loyal four-footed furry companion.
Q: We recently noticed that our
old basset hound has a large swell-
ing on the inside of her ear. It seems
like our dog has always done a lot
of scratching at her ears and shakes
her head a lot.
Is this the reason for the swelling?
Should we take our dog to our veter-
inarian to have her ears examined?
A: It is very likely that your old
basset hound has a hematoma on
the inside of her ear. This is a com-
mon condition caused by the hemor-
rhage of blood under the skin of the
ear. Therefore, the swelling is most
likely just a large blood clot. Most
likely the head shaking has caused
the rupture of small blood vessels
within the exterior part of the ear.
You should have your dog exam-
ined by your veterinarian as soon
as possible. Very small hematomas
can sometimes be reduced in size by
simply removing the blood through
a needle into a syringe. Larger he-
matomas often require surgery to
reduce their size.
Keeping your dog's ears clean and
preventing insect bites, such as
those caused by flies, usually de-
creases the frequency of head shak-
ing and scratching. Your veterinar-
ian can give you additional advice
about how to handle this situation
and regarding the care of your aging
four-footed companion.

News from
CERT Meeting
Gulfport's CERT (Community
Emergency Response Team) team
had a large and enthusiastic group
at the regular monthly training ses-
sion, Saturday morning at City Hall.
Training included a presentation by
Officer Pat Callahan from Pinellas
County Animal Services.
Officer Callahan informed the Team
about local "pet friendly" shelters in
Pinellas County. In the event of an
evacuation, residents can take them-
selves and their dog and/or cat to
Dunedin Middle School or Thurgood
Marshall Middle School. Oak Grove
Middle School is also designated as a
"special needs shelter." If an evacu-
ating resident has special medical
needs and a pet, Pinellas County
Animal Services will transport the
pet.
In all, Pinellas County can accommo-
date only 800 pets. Pre-registratidn
is required for "pet friendly" and
"special needs" shelters. Officer
Callahan indicted at this time only
10 people are currently registered
for these shelters in all of Pinellas
County. Evacuations can occur at
Guf r F L c
any time and you are encouraged to
get you and your pet registered.
Approved pet shelter facilities do
not accommodate any sort of pet
other than cats or dogs. Participants
were surprised to learn that there are
a significant number of exotic pets
including large primates, venomous
snakes and large cats, such as tigers,
in Pinellas County. Though the own-
ers of those animals are required to
be licensed and to have some sort of
individual evacuation plan, it was
unclear just how such an evacuation
would occur or be confirmed in a true
emergency.
Al and Cindy Davis shared an expe-
rience they had this fall during the
wild fires out west. Local radio sta-
tions in the San Diego area stopped
regular programming and concen-
trated on helping residents find
places to take their pets. Residents
called to offer space and other resi-
dents called looking for a place for
their horse, dog, cat or whatever.
The stations aired all the calls and
helped get people connected. Hotels
relaxed rates and pet prohibitions
for local residents and communities
allowed evacuees to park and reside
in RVs, campers and autos in parks
and in adjacent streets until the fires
were under control. Many of those
"camped" in and around San Diego
had pets with them. The community
came together to help each other; for
people and for pets.
The Tampa Bay Region has ap-
proximately 2.8 million people. The
domestic dog population (just dogs)
is estimated at 500,000! Officer
Callahan estimated that if one fac-
tors in pets of all sorts, from dogs to
monkeys, rabbits, cats and turtles
and everything else, that there are
about five pets for every single person
in Pinellas County. Pinellas County
has about 980,000 human residents,
so the scope of pet evacuation and
control becoines a major part of di-
saster planning.
To learn more about Gulfport CERT
(Community Emergency Response
Team) please call Fire Chief Yaudes
at 893-1000. If you have any ques-
tions about the pet friendly shelters,
or registration for special needs ac-
commodations, please call Pinellas
County Animal Control Officer
Callahan at 582-2600, ext. 28115.

Golfing With
A couple of years ago, my
grandparents did something
unexpected: they moved
north to retire. Of course, by "north"
I mean North Carolina, but after
more than 20 years in Florida, they
have become snowbirds. They built,
as my grandfather has always done,
their own house in a community in
*the mountains.
I mention this, however, not to
point out my grandparents' peculiar
migratory habits, but to highlight a
phenomenon of the "golden years"
that I never thought would happen in
our family. You see, the centerpiece
of this community in North Carolina
is not necessarily the rugged,
mountain wilderness, but a large,
sloping golf course-perfect for my
grandmother's new, favorite sport.
Granted, this is not an unusual
activity for the senior set. In Florida,
it's really not an unusual activity
for anyone. Even my high school
had a golf "team." But, it's just not
the sort of thing my family has ever
done. Apart from my grandfather's
obsession with racquetball, our
"sports" have usually involved less
strenuous activities such as board
games and wine tasting. -
So now my grandmother, my aunt
and my uncle. (admittedly a huge fan

Grandma
of golf before joining the family) give
each other clip-on towels, titanium
clubs, bags with built-in, automatic
stands, super long-distance golf
balls, loads .of lessons and other
golfing doodads and accoutrements.
As they say, golf is an expensive
hobby.
But probably the most intriguing
bi-product of this family obsession
is that I have been sucked into the
.freak show. Yes, me. Talented,
athletic me.
Because my grandfather does
not have the patience to drive to
the golf course, much less spend
the afternoon walking after an
egg-sized ball-and because I have
been known to stare at the walls for
entertainment-I have become my
grandmother's default golf partner.
The truth is, though, I don't mind so
much.
Okay, that's a lie. I love it. Aside
from the fact that my grandmother is
the coolest person I know, golfing is
a sublime sport. (Well, game, really.
I'm not sure if an activity that only
elevates your heart rate when you
sink a ball into the water trap can
really be called a "sport.")
But maybe that's why I like it.
I'm not very good and, I'm sure my
grandmother will forgive me, but
she's not either. It takes us two
hours to play nine holes and, if
you know anything about golf, you
know that's about twice as long as
it should take. We sit, we hit a few
dozen "practice" shots, we giggle,
we muck around in bushes and
water holes looking for the ball and
other lost objects, we sit some more
and let hoards of "real" golfers play
through, and generally wander the
course laughing hysterically at our
deficiencies. It's the most fun you
can have without beer, really.
While the Tampa Bay area is home
to a bajillion golf courses, our favorite
is Twin Brooks in St. Petersburg.
One of three city-run courses,
Twin Brooks has a down-to-Earth
atmosphere, andl8 holes challenging
enough for the good, the bad and-I
have some experience with this-the
ugly. There're water traps and sand
pits and bushes galore, and a decent
driving range where you can take out
your pent-up aggression on the ball
rounder-upper guy. Oh, and there's
even a small shop so you can buy all
those doodads for the golf-obsessed
in your life.
As for me, I haven't made the big
leap into investing in any doodads-of
my own, but I do have a putter. And
some tees. And a strange looking
fork device for repairing "divots."
My grandmother gave them all to
me. Don't worry though; I'm a long
way from building a house in the
mountains. Do you realize how long
it would take me to find my ball in a
place like that?

The Treasure Island Community
Center is alive with color, thanks
to the Members of the Art Guild
of T.I. whose exhibit continues un-
til February 28th. This week we
introduce two newcomers to the
Community Center.
New Jersey native Bruce Fall-
ender, has had a varied career:
award-winning painter, art collec-
tor and owner of an art center that
combined performing and visual
arts. He has chosen only award-
winning pieces for our show: a
nostalgic charcoal, "Victorian Still
Life;" a landscape in watercolor,
"Gulls and Dunes;" and an intrigu-
ing "California Collage." Finally,
Bruce's delicate acrylic "Reaching
Tbabrath" suggest an oriental fla-
vor.
Educated in and a resident or To-
ronto, Sonis Smith is now active in
the St. Petersburg art world, study-
ing with Marjorie Dean Andruk.
Sonia uses acrylics to showcase
her bold style, as in her abstract "A
Touch of Orange". But she shows
a bit of whimsy in "Tipsy Houses",
and much drama in both "Mexican
Sunset" and in "Edinburgh". In the
latter she effectively uses the stark
silhouette of buildings against a
make-believe sky.
Come enjoy the celebration of our
50th Anniversary at the Center, lo-
cated on Park and 106th Avenue.
Call 547-4575 for visiting hours.

1 1 With her decision made
and a good night's sleep
as a result, Sunday
morning .should have been a
breeze for Rebecca. No such luck.
She knew it was going to be a bad
day when she fixed her first cup of
coffee and carried it into the day room
and placed it on the side table next to
her red leather chair, then returned
to the kitchen to fix herself some
toast. When the toast was ready,
she carried it into the day room and
discovered that her coffee was gone.
For most people, the disappearance
would be mystifying; For Rebecca,
it was just another day in her life of
living with her resident ghost and
apparently permanent roommate.
"I don't need this today, Sharon,"
she called out to the rafters. "I've got
too much to do." The rafters didn't
answer, but when she returned
to the kitchen, she found her cof-
fee cup empty, upside down in the
sink. "Thank you," she said, and
poured herself another cup of coffee.
She did, indeed, have a lot to do.
Sam was coming over for their usual
Sunday lunch and Rebecca had done
nothing yesterday to get ready. So
she needed to straighten up the
house, and she had to run to Publix
and do some shopping, not just for
lunch but for herself as well, and then
she needed to come home and cook.
For lunch, she figured she'd just do
the usual: spaghetti and meatballs
(Sam's all time. favorite), some salad
and bread (mostly for herself), and
chocolate cake for desert. At least
cooking for Sam was easy, her tastes
predictable and never-changing.
She reminded herself that she
would have to come up with a better
menu, something more interesting
and adult, when James came to din-
ner next Saturday night if James
came to dinner next Saturday night.
She didn't know yet if he was com-
ing because she hadn't called him
yet to ask him. That was the other
thing she had to do this morning:
make that call, the sooner, the better.
Which meant that, like any self-
respecting human being facing a task
they didn't relish, she put it off. It's
too early, she told herself. He might
still be in bed ... calling this early will
make me look too anxious after last
night's date ... I have too much to do.
So she straightened and cleaned
the house, not a major cleaning but
enough to make it presentable. Then
she jumped into the shower and fixed
her hair, which, this morning, meant
pulling it into a pony tail. And then
she jumped into her car and headed
for the grocery store, shopping list in
hand but telephone call still unmade.
Sam was having a busy day, too,
although she hadn't left her rented
room and had no plans to leave un-
til it was time to go to Rebecca's for
lunch. She would, however, do that,
for sure. It was her favorite thing
to do, and Rebecca's house was her
favorite place to be in all the world,
and going there for lunch was the
highlight of her week any week.
But until it was time to go, she had a
map to study, and to memorize. It was
all part of her plan to prove to Rebecca
how much Rebecca needed her.
It was a simple plan, really, as
any plan Sam came up with would
have to, be. She wasn't much for
complicated thinking. And it was
based on a very simple premise:
Rebecca needed to be protected.
There was an alligator at loose in
Gulfport, and it was killing women -
young women, nice women, women
like Rebecca. Sooner or later, the al-
ligator was going to get to Rebecca.
Sam was sure of it. So there was
only one solution, as far as she
could figure out. She had to find
the alligator, and she had to stop it.
Oh, sure, Rebecca had tried to tell
her that there was no alligator. But
she knew better. She heard the talk
at the. restaurant. She saw the pic-
tures in the newspaper. Everyone
said there was an alligator, Sam
figured Rebecca was trying to pro-
tect 'her, just like she always did,
when she said there wasn't one. But
if Sam ,found it, and destroyed it,
then Rebecca would have to, admit
that there was an alligator after all,
and that Sam had saved her from itf.
The problem, of course, was find-
ing it. That was the hard part, and
that was the part she had been
thinking about most. Where was it?
She knew that all of the victims had
been found in water. And she knew
that alligators lived in water, or at
least spent a lot of time in water. She
had seen them on TV. So she thought
and she thought and she finally decid-
ed that the alligator must live some-
where near the water where the vic-
tims were found. But where was that?
She had a map of Gulfport,'one that
Rebecca had gotten for her. It said
Gulfport Chamber of Commerce on
the front. And she had been study-
ing it to try and find out where
the victims had been and, there-
fore, where the alligator lived.
But she hadn't had much luck;
she couldn't figure it out. The
map was too complicated. She
could find Clam Bayou on the
map and, next to it, the Gulfport
Marina. But after that, she got lost.
So she took the map to work one
day, and Kenny, the busboy, her
one-time date and now her friend
again, had helped her figure out
where the bodies had been located.
He had found the little blue dots
of water on .the map and marked
them with a big red X and a circle.
Now all Sam had to do was memo-
rize where the X's were, and learn
the streets that went to them. She
already had a head start; she already
knew some of the streets from riding
on her bicycle. She planned to do some
more ridixig this week and learn some
more. Then she would be ready to go.
Rebecca would be so proud.
This is a work of fiction. The events,
the people and, especially, the victims
are all fictional as well. No similar-
ity to real people or real events is in-
tended. Next week: Chapter 11 con-
cludes as Rebecca and Sam do lunch.

I have been the recipient of many
wonderful expressions of support
from every aspect of the community
and I feel truly blessed to have so
many friends and strong backers.
I also wish to thank all of you that
voted. Whether you voted for me
or not, it's the fact that you took
the time to vote that is important.
As I write this letter I do not
know the outcome of the election.
However, I can promise you that
if i have been elected, I will do my
best to uphold your faith in me and
represent you and all the citizens of
Gulfport to the best of my ability.

Unforeseen circumstances have

Homeowners on the tour and

lot of that had to do with the vol-
unteers they met along the way.
The Chamber and committee send
their sincere thanks to all the volun-
teers who sat at a. home, worked the
ticket tables, or assumed all the other
duties the Chamber called on its vol-

First, let me apologize for being ab-
sent from this column for the past three
weeks. No, I wasn't off luxuriating
in some exotic vacation spot. I wish.
The first week, I was sick with a bad
cold and didn't feel like writing or
thinking, even. The second week, I was
better but didn't have anything I wanted
to write about. Last week, I did write a
column but, due to a technical snafu at
The Gabber, it didn't make it into print.
So here we are, two days after an elec-
tion, and it was an important one. And
I'm wondering why there wasn't more
interest in it than there seemed to be?
I talked to Mayor Yakes a couple of
weeks ago. He's concerned, among
other things, about low voter inter-
est and low turnout at elections. He
thinks it's because voters are turned
off, not just locally but nationally and
every other "ly." He's probably right.
When you hear that New Hampshire
had something like 60 or 70 percent
voter turnout for its recent presidential
primary, you realize how pitiful our 20
to 25 percent turnouts (and frequently
even lower) really are. I'm betting the
turnout on Tuesday was no better.
By the way, I'm writing this column
on Monday, the day before the elec-
tion. I thought I'd stick my neck out a
little bit and make some predictions.
But the column is being published
two days after the election, so please
excuse the confusion in verb tense.
There were three major items on the bal-
lotTuesday. Firstandforemost, ofcourse,
was our local City Council election. All
politics is local; isn't that what they say?
We had two council seats to fill, one be-
ing vacated and one with an incumbent.
And there were four people running for
those two seats. That fact, just by itself,
should have stirred up some interest.
But it didn't seem to work out that way.
Even the candidate forum last week
was, well, moderately attended, shall
we say. And if there were any fire-
works, I didn't see them on TV. It was
interesting to hear that most of the
candidates support the mooring field
A2
Just for the fun
f it, some election

Roger Turner
VIEWPOINT
and none of them could work up any
enthusiasm for the city attorney. But
beyond that, it was pretty mundane.
My guess is that Bob Worthington has
been re-elected to the seat for Ward
3 and that Judy Ryerson was elected
to replace Ted Phillips in Ward 1.
Why? Well, Angela Leiner, the other
candidate for Ward 3, is not well known,
ran no discernable campaign, and ap-
peared to be out of her depth up their
on the dais during the candidate forum.
That's no way to beat an incumbent.
Rick Gilbert, the other candidate for
the Ward 1 seat, did run a campaign -
even an aggressive one. But he was run-
ning against a woman who is extremely
well known in this town, and trusted.
The same cannot be said about Gilbert.
So that outcome is pretty easy
to predict (he says, confidently).
Not so, the- other ballot items.
The state legislature decided, in their
never-ending wisdom, to move the presi-
dential primary up to January 29 so that
Florida would have more impact on the
national race. It didn't work out quite
that way, though; what a surprise! The
legislature almost always gets it right.
Because we broke the national pri-
mary rules, the Republican Party
stripped the Florida GOP of half its
delegates to the nominating convention,
and the Democratic Party took away
the Florida Democrats' whole slate. So
in no time at all, Florida slipped from
power-broker status to "who cares?"
Fortunately, a candidate came along to
savethe dayandrevive someinterest. That
would be Rudy Giuliani, the Republican
candidate who, until the primaries began,
was leading the national and Florida polls.
But he didn't pay much attention to
the earlier caucuses and primaries,
except for New Hampshire, and came
in a fairly distant also-ran in all of
them. And his poll numbers dropped
like a rock. By Tuesday, his candidacy
was hinging on how well he did here.
I'm betting he didn't do all that well.
The late poll numbers were showing both
Romney and McCain well ahead of him.
All three have been heavily advertising,
especially Romney, and. Charlie Crist
endorsed McCain over the weekend.
The situation has to be discouraging
for Giuliani supporters. I know sev-
eral Republicans (yes, I know some
Republicans) who were supporting
him. But at least the situation in-
jected some juice into the primary.
If it counted for anything other than
bragging rights, the Democratic side of
the primary would have been interest-
ing the first viable African-American
candidate vs. the first viable woman
candidate and all that. In Florida,
my guess is that Hillary scores the
win, if anyone shows up at the polls.
But then, there are property
taxes, a true Florida issue that
people can get excited about.
The governor certainly has been. He's
been all over the place and all over
the tube, urging people to vote "yes"
on Amendment 1. He put his popular-
ity and his prestige on the line. On
the other hand, many groups, includ-
ing the Florida League of, Cities, have
been actively campaigning against it.
Put me down in the "no" column,
and for one simple reason. We have a
very inequitable property tax system
in Florida. In fact, it's whacky. And
Amendment 1 just makes it more so.
Our system is based on who owns the
home and how long they've owned it.
What kind of basis for a tax system is
that? If the owner lives in the house,
he or she gets a homestead exemp-
tion. And every year, the owner gets
an additional Save Our Homes tax
break. Next door neighbors can and do
pay wildly different taxes on similar
properties. That's the. situation now.
The purpose of Amendment 1 was
to make this disparity worse by mak-
ing the homestead exemption larger,
and then making it possible for home
owners to take their Save Our Homes
tax break with them when they
move to another house in Florida.
It's a tax system based on lunacy.
As for the outcome, I can't even guess.
All those ads by the governor surely
helped, and it is difficult for home own-
ers to vote against another tax break
for themselves. But to pass, the amend-
ment must get 60 percent of the vote
and that's a pretty high hurdle to clear.
Did it pass? You already know the
answer. I don't, but I'm betting it
didn't. That may be wishful thinking.

on't let the prevailing winds keep you off the water
this winter. The last couple of mild winters have kept
the fish in a feeding state much like it is still fall. Even
with the front a couple of weeks ago that dropped our temp al-
most 17 degrees, it wasn't enough for the water to stay that way.
The trout bite on the grass flats of Fort Desoto have been
very productive. Look for the lee side of the wind where the
water is protected and the grass is calmer and cleaner. Work
the grass drops adjacent to channels or deep water. For tackle
we are using light spinning rods spooled with 8 lb. test. My
bait of choice has been a 1/4 oz. jig with a 3 in. shad tail or a
weedless exude jerk bait in watermelon, motor oil, or live bait
pattern. You can catch plenty of fish anchoring up in an area,
but I like to drift or use a trolling motor to cover more ground.
SOnce you catch a fish then drop anchor and work that area.
When the wind is blowing too hard to fish the flats, seek
refuge in the cover of the local bridge pilings and canal
docks. There are plenty of Redfish, Sheephead, and Black
Drum working under the concrete cover. Take a shovel to
scrape off the barnacles, muscles, and oysters that grow on
the pilings to create a natural chum slick. Then take some
of the same chum, put enough to cover the whole hook,
and free line it down the backside of the piling. I don't use
any weights unless the current is running strong. Try to
keep the bait in the eddy behind the piling out of the cur-
rent so it doesn't get carried away. Make sure the bait sits
on the bottom or the fish won't eat it. Now the bite is very
subtle, if you feel any taps or the rod gets heavy and moves
in an odd direction then go ahead and set the hook. Once
hooked, up maneuver the fish out away from the pilings so
he doesn't cut you off. These fish are often over looked for
their sport and table fare. But any way you put it, I would I
rather get the rods bent than sit at home dreaming about it.

Doggie Paws Rescue
Needs Volunteers
Florida Doggie Paws Rescue, Inc.
is an all-volunteer foster-based or-
ganization. This grass roots rescue
organization was formed one year
ago by seven dedicated people with
one common goal: to save the dogs.
The group's mission is to responsibly
rescue, rehabilitate, foster and find
permanent loving homes for unwant-
ed, abandoned and abused small-to-
medium breed dogs throughout the
state of Florida.
The Rescue was established at
the end of January 2007 and by the
end of December, over 130 dogs had
been rescued, and over 100 of them
had- been placed in their "forever
homes". Most of the dogs came from
Levy County Animal Services where
animals are euthanized after only six
days if someone doesn't come to their
aid. All of these rescued animals have
turned into happy, healthy, well-ad-
justed dogs because of the love, care
and commitment of the volunteers of
Florida Doggie Paws Rescue.
The Rescue promotes the realities
of pet ownership, educating the pub-
lic concerning pet overpopulation
and the importance of spaying and
neutering pets; humane treatment
of animals through education and
public awareness; and microchipping
pets so that a lost'pet can be reunited
with its family.

POWERFUL PRAYER TO HOLY SPIRIT -
Holy Spirit, you who' solves all problems, Who
lights all roads so that I can attain my goal, you
who give me the divine gifts to forgive and for-
get all evil against me and that in all instances
of my life you are with me, I want in this short
prayer to thank you for all things and confirm
once again that I never want to be separated
from you, even in spite of all material illusions.
I wish to be with you, in eternal glory. Thank
you for your mercy toward me and mine.

NEVER FAILING PRAYER TO ST. MICHAEL
- St. Michael, the Archangel, Defend Us In
Battle; Be Our Defense Against the Wicked-
ness and Snares of the Devil. May God Re-
buke Him We Humbly Pray; and Do You Oh
Prince of the Heavenly Host, By the Power
of God, Thrust Into Hell Satan and the Other
Evil Spirits Who Prowl About the World For the
Ruin of Souls. Amen. St. Michael, I Resort
to Your Protection and in My Faith, Offer This
Light Which Shall Burn Every Tuesday. Com-
fort Me in My Difficulties and While Lodging in
the House of Our Savior Intercede for Me and
My Family That We Will Be Able to Hold God
Close to Our Hearts and Be Provided for in All
of Our Necessities. I Beseech You, to Have
Infinite Pity in Regard to Favors I ask of You
(Name Them) So That I May Be Able To Over-
come All Difficulties as You Did the Dragons
at Your Feet. Our Father (Say 3 Times). Hail
Mary (Say 3 Times). Glory Be (Say 3 Times).
