Prayers for Peace
at First Light
Members of KTC Tampa Bay, a local Buddhist
group joined together with a small gathering
of Quakers at their Meeting House in St. Pe-
tersburg at 7 a.m. New Year's morning to praiy
for peace. Those attending lit candles, chanted
Tibetan passages related to peace and offered
personal prayers. In the Quaker tradition,
much of the service was conducted in silence.
The annual affair was started by Gyalwang
Karmapa, the 17th a Buddist priest in Tibet
in 2000. The Quakers have been hosting the
local group since 2006. Services are conducted
worldwide beginning at the International Date
line on New Year's morning and then travel
west as the New Year dawns in each new time
zone. In addition to St. Petersburg services
were.held in Gainesville, Jacksonville, St. Au-
gustine; Athens and Columbus, Ohio; and
Erie and Indiana City, Pennsylvania. 16 peo- .
ple attended the vigil in St. Petersburg, with
about half being Gulfport residents.

Carols by.
Candlelight Review
By Jim Minder
The Gulfport Lions Club hosted
our 2007 Carols by Candlelight with
members of the general,public on
December 21. We sang our religious
and secular Christmas Carols to mu-
sic provided by past District Governor
Norman Axanders who did a fantas-
tic job! Our members provided pastry
treats including pies, cheesecake,
cookies and cherry crunch, all of
which were delicious.
This year we asked members of our
audience to share their Christmas
memories with the group. I have
lived around the world being horn
in Germany so I shared how to say
"Merry Christmas" and "Happy New
Year" in German, Hawaiian, Italian
and Spanish. One woman in her 70's
told us about receiving a special doll
one year at a tender age. Another
told us about Christmas in a foreign
country and someone told us about
four youngsters who formed a quar-
tet to sing Christmas Carols at com-
munity events and then donated the
proceeds to feed the poor. We plan to
continue this feature of reminiscing
to future programs. Lion Les McEwen
and Margaret Victor did a solo per-
formance of "White Christmas".
We at the Gulfport Lions Club want
you to be aware of our efforts to as-
sist the visually impaired. It is just
that simple. Contact us when the
need arises.
Finally, we wish to thank you, for
your participation in our 2007 Carols
by Candlelight. Your involvement
made it an overwhelming success!

Drivers should
exercise some restraint.
Q: I have often wondered -if allow-
ing dogs to run around freely in cars
or transported in the backs of open
trucks without being retrained ever
causes accidents. A dog running
around in a car has to be major dis-
traction and most likely often blocks
full vision of the driver. Do dogs ever
fall out of the backs of trucks? It
seems to me that there ought to be
laws prohibiting the transportation
of animals without proper restraint.
I have often thought that we should
have a national "transport your pet
safely week" to draw attention to this
problem.
A: Although I do not have numbers
regarding the number of accidents
caused by free-roaming pets in cars
and trucks, your concerns are justi-
fied. A free-roaming pet can obstruct
the view of the driver and can be a
major distraction. Accidents can be
caused by animals moving unexpect-
edly and because of obstructed views
through rear windows and rear view
mirrors. Of course animals hanging
out of windows and running unre-
strained in the backs of trucks can
cause serious accidents.
Fortunately, there are many safe
ways to restrain pets in moving ve-
hicles. Using a secured crate is the
safest form of confinement. The crate
should be large enough to allow the
dog or cat to fully stand up and turn
around comfortably. Crates placed in
the beds of trucks should be securely
bolted to the floor or strapped so that
they cannot slide around during ac-
celeration or sudden stops.
Using a properly fitting restraint
harness specifically designed for pets
is the next best option to using an
animal crate while transporting pets.
Pet harnesses can be purchased at
most pet stores and online. Of course
the lead on the harness should be
short enough to keep the pet from
roaming throughout the automobile.
Animals on long leads can actually
be more dangerous than free-roam-,
ing animals. There are many reports
of dogs on long leads in the beds of
trucks falling out and being dragged
to gruesome deaths.
A third alternative for restraining
pets in station wagons and vans is
the use of dividers to confine the ani-
mals t)o the rear portion of the vehicle.
However, if the animal is free-roam-
ing behind a divider it still might ob-
struct the view to the rear and might
be thrown against the divider during
a sudden, unexpected stop.
There are laws regarding the trans-
port of pets in some localities. Of
course, making these laws more wide-
spread is a worthy cause and could
result in reducing the frequency of
serious accidents involving trans-
ported pets and their owners.
Q: This might seem strange, bit our
dog seems to be calmer when we are
reading and listening to. soft classi-
cal music than when we are watch-
ing television. Of course, we are more
calm while listening to good music,
too. Are we just imaging that mu-
sic calms our dog? Is there anything
published in the scientific literature
about this?
A: Just as in humans, what our
dogs listen to does seem to have an
effect on their behaviors. It has been
shown that uncomplicated classical
music does have a calming effect on
dogs and babies. A new book titled
"Through a Dog's Ear" by Joshua
Leeds and Susan Wagner (Sounds
True, $18.95) addresses how music
affects dogs. This book explains how
to use sound to improve the health
and behavior of our canine compan-
. ions.

Frequently, spouses share responsi-
bility for important decisions affect-
ing their children, such as choosing
schools and medical treatment.
If you are unable to agree on cus-
tody, the court will award it based on
considerations such as parental fit-
ness, the preferences of the children,
and their age and sex. A party who
later wants a change in custody must
show that conditions have changed
and that a new arrangement is in the
best interest of the children.
Spousal support is called alimony
or maintenance. Either you or your
spouse may be entitled to spousal
support depending on your income
and property, your standard of liv-
ing, your financial needs, and the
circumstances leading to the divorce.
If you and your spouse are unable to
agree on support, a judge will decide
who should pay it, how much is to be
paid, and how long it will continue.
The judge may award spousal sup-
port until the receiving spouse is self
supporting or until death or remar-
riage of the receiving spouse.
You and your spouse are both re-
sponsible for the support of your
children. If you cannot agree on the
proportion of support between you,
the court will apportion the responsi-
bility based on custody, your income,
financial resources and other obliga-
tions.
In some cases, you and your spouse
may go back to court in later years
to ask the judge to increase or reduce
spousal or child support. However,
you must be able to show that there
.has 'been a change in financial re-
sourc6s or need.

Annapolis South: A Gulfport New Year's Tradition
By Cathy Salustri _
Ron Klecka leans down to -mea-
sure the distance between two bocce
, balls. The end captain measures
twice. Everyone around the courts
waits for his decision. A ham sand-
wich hangs out of his mouth as he
manipulates the measuring tape
with both hands.
He snaps the tape shut, makes his
judgment, and swallows a bite of
sandwich. Play resumes.
That's about as serious as it gets
every New Year's Day for this group,
who laughingly call themselves "An-
napoli%.South." Every New Year's
Day for the past three years they
spend New Year's Eve at Joe Mar-
tin and Arlene Kitchin's Treasure
Island home. Every New Year's Day
they meet on Gulfport Beach for six
games of bocce ball.
None of the group lives in Gulfport
- in fact, some of them don't even.
live in Florida but they return ev-
ery year for couple-against-couple
waterfront bocce.
Gulfport doesn't take bocce court
reservations, so they take their
chances. They haven't had any prob-
lems getting one of the two courts,
-but they couldn't find anyone from
the city to unlock the case of bocce
balls, so they brought their own.
And sandwiches. They bring lots of
ham sandwiches.
They know one another from the
Eastport Yacht Club in Annapolis,
Maryland. Two by two they either
moved to Pinellas County or started
visiting in the winter, and soon they.
had enough people for a pseudo-
serious bocce. While they sit on the
green benches that line the bocce
courts, watching sailboats drift by
and bright green Nanday Conures
flock in the trees, they talk about
Annapolis.
Of course, Gulfport has much better
weather this time of year. And this
is crucial Arlene lives in Florida.
After all, she makes the sandwich-
es.
You can contact Cathy Salustri at
P.'-n^T'thylncmrilQ'^PrhQlhThir pmm
Although the group plays social bocce, Ron Klecka takes his end captain du-
ties almost as seriously as he does Arlene Kitchin's ham sandwich. End cap-
tain duties include measuring the distance of the balls from the jack.

WHAT DO YOU MEAN
I MISSED THE DEADLINE?
I a 0 -

I r
I,,,,, ,,,,,,--
Well, the holiday season is over
and none too soon, I imagine,
for a lot of people. I'm afraid I
have to be included as one of them.
Several people have said to me that
they couldn't get into the spirit of things
this year didn't have much of the
Christmas spirit, or the holiday spirit,
whatever your PC preference is. They
didn't have much of it themselves, and
they couldn't detect much of it around.
I'm afraid I have to be included in that
group, too. I just haven't figured out,
yet, how much of it was me and how
much was external forces.
It's probably mostly me. After all, the
external situation hasn't changed all
that much.
But then, the economy is kind of strug-
gling. Maybe if the news media didn't
find it necessary every year to give us
daily updates on how the retailers are
doing, as if that were the only thing that
mattered during the holiday season.
Maybe if we were somehow able to
bring the focus of the season back to
something like "peace on Earth, good
will toward men" (and women, of course
- another PC moment).
But then, we .don't have peace on
earth, do we? Not even close. And while
I find plenty of good will on a day-to-
day, individual, person-to-person basis,
I'm not at all sure that our society, on
the whole, is doing all that well when it
comes to good will. Quite the opposite,
in fact.
So that brings us back to the individu-
al, doesn't it?
One of the high points of the season,
for us, was acquiring a piece of artwork
for our home from local artists (and
friends) Ricardo de la Vega and Felipe
Packard. In a word (or two), it's simply
wonderful, and I'm so happy to have it
in our lives.
The low point? Probably canceling
the semi-traditional open house we
were planning for Christmas Day. We
changed our minds only two days before
we were going to distribute the invita-
tions. Couldn't see how we could fit it in
or make it work, this year.
Even the Christmas tree was a strug-
gle. We bought it early, as we always do -

VIEWPOINT
Thanksgiving weekend at Home Depot
(a great place to get "live" trees, by the
way). But we didn't get it up and com-
pletely decorated until about three days
before Christmas Eve. That's a pretty
good summary of the season for us.
But, hey, it's over. And now we have a
whole new year to look forward to.
Like the presidential primaries, start-
ing today. In no time at all, we'll know
who the Democratic and Republican
nominees will be, and then we can
spend the rest of the year talking about
and listening to just the two of them in-
stead of a field of, what, 10 each?
The Democrats seem to be coming
down to a choice between either the
first woman nominee or the first black
nominee. An interesting choice, no mat-
ter what your politics.
For the Republicans, the choice is a
little less clear cut, but it seems to be
revolving around national security,
managerial. skills, and piousness. A
somewhat tougher call;
Then there's Iraq, of course, still Iraq,
although not talked about quite as
much these days. Things have quieted
down some over there in the last few
months, but I still can't feel good about
it. Maybe if I saw some indication of an
exit strategy, or signs of political prog-
ress in the Iraqi government. Maybe if
there was an end in sight.
In Florida, we've been pretty lucky
the last couple of years, hurricane-wise.
Is it too much to ask for another lucky
year?
That would give the governor and the
state legislature a little more time to
devote to their promises to cut property
taxes and insurance rates. They haven't
done too well on either front, yet.
Yeah, I know, we're voting on their lat-
est plan to cut property taxes on Janu-
ary 29, the same day we're voting in
the presidential primary. We'll see if it
passes. If it doesn't, I'm sure they can
throw something else together.
Not so coincidentally, we will be voting
in our local election on January 29, too,
to elect two people to our City Council.
That might be interesting.
Judging f&om the Q&A article that
appeared in last week's issue of The
Gabber, it looks like the election 'is
shaping up as a contest between the es-
tablishment and the upstarts, with the
upstarts not being too happy with the
way the establishment has been doing
things. I don't .know why that should
be surprising, since it's fairly standard
election fare. But it surprises me a bit
anyway. Stay tund. We'll see how it
plays out.
. And then there's' Ted Phillips, and
whether or not he'll make it out the exit
door without raising any more stink.
That situation has turned into some-
thing of a spectator sport, too.
And it's been sad to watch.
The man is something like 90, and
retiring from City Council, and has al-
ready moved to Deland. He's been in of-
fice for nearly 20 years and has served
well and accomplished many things for
the city. It's a time we should be cele-
brating his achievements and express-
ing our thanks and wishing him a fond
bon voyage.
But instead, he has been using this
time to verbally lash out, publicly and
repeatedly, at what he sees as his own
mistreatment. He seems to think he's
not getting the respect and the deferen-
tial treatment he' deserves. So instead
of patting him on the back, people are
probably holding their breath to see. if
he makes it out the door without an-
other outburst.
There's only one scheduled City Coun-
cil meeting in January, and the election
is January 29. I assume the electees
will be sworn in before the first Febru-
ary meeting. So Phillips has only one
more meeting to attend. Here's hoping
he made a New Year's resolution to get
through it with dignity.
I've made a few New Year's resolutions
myself:
One is to vote in all the upcoming elec-
tions, local, state, primary, national -
all of them. That shouldn't be too hard
to do, since I always vote in all of them
anyway.
Another is to try to give old folks the
respect they're due.
And to try to get more prepared for
a hurricane this year, just in case our
luck has run out.
And to work at getting a little more
of the Christmas spirit, or at least the
holiday spirit, at the end of the year.
And finally, to go through with the
Christmas Day open house this year,
come Hell or high water or hurricane
or even a bad case of the Christmas
blahs.

1 O Lydia sat on a tall stool be-
hind the sales counter, lost
in thought, her arms hug-
ging her upper body as if she were
warding off a chill. Jeremy thought
that was odd, since it wasn't at all
cool in the shop, even with the front
door propped open. In fact, he had
been thinking about closing the door
and turning on the air conditioning.
"Are you all right?" he asked her.
Jeremy was standing in the open
doorway to his office/storeroom with
a fresh cup of coffee in his hand. It
had been a tough morning for both of
them, what with the police swarming
over the shop, combing through the
merchandise, looking into every nook
and cranny, asking endless ques-
tions, demanding information. It had
been a. relief, for both of them, when
the officers finally left.
Jeremy's question startled Lydia out
of her trance. She turned and looked
at him, blankly at first, but then with
more clarity. She shook her head.
"No," she said. "I'm not all right. Are
you?"
Jeremy shrugged. "About as good as
can be expected," he said, adding "I
guess" to the end of his answer.
Lydia became 'aware that she was
hugging herself, then dropped her
arms. But it was only moments be-
fore she unconsciously raised them
again, wrapping them around her
upper body.
"This is getting really scary, now,"
she said. "Right here in the shop."
Jeremy nodded.
"I mean, he's been right here in the
shop," she repeated.
"We don't know that," Jeremy ob-
jected. "And for that matter, we don't
even know that it's a man, for sure."
She looked at him, an expression
of skepticism mixed with fear on her
face.
"Okay," he said, looking away.
"You're probably right. It probably is
a man, and it looks like he's been in
40
here. Either that, or he has an accom-
plice who has been which I guess is
not very likely."
"Who do you think it is?" she asked,
looking off into the distance.
Jeremy shook his head again, but
realized she wasn't looking at him.
"No idea," he said. "A while back, I
thought it might be old Lavery next
door. He's so mean-spirited, I figured
he could be capable of just about any-
thing."
"Then a week or two ago, I thought
it was probably Pendergast. He al-
ways seems to be around when these
things happen, and he always knows
a lot about it or thinks he does."
Lydia smiled faintly. "Being obnox-
ious doesn't make you a murderer,"
she said.
Jeremy had to admit she was right.
"And this morning," he continued, "I
thought maybe it was Don Burnard.
Can you believe it, meek and mild
Don Burnard? Well, he used to be
meek and mild, anyway. I don't know
what's up with him lately."
"I know," she said. "He's awful."
Jeremy signed. "Tomorrow, I'll 4rob-
ably think it's some guy .who walks in
the door or every guy who walks in
the door."
"I know," she said again. "Me, too.
I don't know if I can work here any-
more."
Jeremy was about to say, "The only
thing I know for sure is that I didn't
do it," but he only got about two
words out before he realized what
she had just said.
"What?" he asked, surprised.
"I don't know if I can work here any-
more," Lydia repeated.
Don Scout Burnard slowly climbed
the steps to his garage apartment
and unlocked his door. He had some
thinking to do.
Actually, "apartment" was prob-
ably an overstatement. It was more
like what they used to call a "bed-
sitting room." It was really just one
room, and not that big, with a small
kitchenette carved out of one corner,
a bathroom in the other, and a small
walk-in closet in between. At least,
he often thought, the builder had
realized that a person might need a
private place to put his pants on if he
ever had company.
The apartment was, though, built
over a garage, one that was located
behind an old, large Mediterranean-
style house on Hull Street, about a
block behind Stetson University. He
had rented it back when he thought
- hoped, anyway he had a shot at
being accepted into the school's Col-
lege of Law.
Burnard headed immediately for
the kitchen and put a kettle of water
on the stove. Then he assembled a
cup, a spoon, and a jar, of instant cof-
fee and waited for the water to boil.
He was not happy. This morning,
he had shown up on the police ra-
dar for the first time, he was pretty
sure, but he didn't like it one bit. It
violated one of his principal rules: lay
low; play it cool; don't call attention
to yourself. Now he had to figure out
how to get back off their radar.
He wasn't terribly worried. He didn't
have much respect for the police and
didn't think they were very bright,
most of them. He figured he could
outsmart them if he had to.
But he was concerned, neverthe-
less.
The kettle whistled, so he turned off
the burner, poured some water in the
cup, and stirred in the coffee. When
he was finished, he rinsed the spoon
under the tap and carefully placed it
in the bottom on the sink.
Then he carried the cup into the
main room, sat down on the corner
of his bed, and looked at his dresser.
On it sat the newspaper photos of the
three victims of the Alligator, all of
them perfectly mounted in decorative
frames he had purchased at Jeremy
Post's shop, the one so pretentiously
called Habitat.
This is a work of fiction. The events,
the people and, especially, the victims
are all fictional as well. No similarity
to real people or real events is intend-
ed. Next week: Chapter 10 concludes
as Lydia, too, has something to think
about.

POWERFUL PRAYER TO HOLY SPIRIT -
Holy Spirit, you who solves all problems, who
lights all roads so that I can attain my goal, you
who give me the divine gifts to forgive and for-
get all evil against me and that in all instances
of my life you are with me, I want in this short
prayer to thank you for all things and confirm
once again that I never want to be separated
from you, even in spite of all material illusions.
I wish to be with you, in eternal glory. Thank
you for your mercy toward me an mine.
