BLA student wins photography award

Congratulations to Steve Verlander, a fifth year BLA student
who won first place in the University of Florida International
Center 2009 Global Culture Photography contest.

The sixth annual Global Culture Photography reception took
place on Jan. 8 in the Grinter Gallery of Grinter Hall. Verlander's
photo, titled "Horseback Riding through the Vineyards in
Tuscany," was taken in Tuscany, Italy.

Relief for Haiti

The Florida Board of
Governors is asking that
everyone interested in
serving in the Haiti relief
efforts register on the

Interior design students campaign
at Capitol

On Tuesday, Jan. 12, 22 interior design students traveled with
IND chair Margaret Portillo and IND professor Candy
Carmel-Gilfilen to the Capitol building in Tallahassee
to participate in the "Yes I Am" campaign.

The event was spearheaded by Janice Young, IND advisory
board member and president of the Interior Design
Associations Foundation. The purpose was to educate and
advocate for maintaining Chapter 481 (Part 1) which regulates
the title and practice of interior design in the state of
Florida. This regulation sets the minimum competency to safely
practice a profession and includes education, experience,
examination and continued education. Over the past two years,
this licensure has been in jeopardy by opponents who wish to
remove this minimum level of competency.

Students were paired with licensed design practitioners from
around the state and assigned visits to legislators and
senators. Each group was able to meet with these individuals
or their aides to discuss interior design and why licensure is
important for the public. One group of students was even able
to talk with Governor Crist.

Portillo noted that these visits were very important.

"These experiences underscored how significant, empowering
and exciting it is to advocate for the advancement of the
profession," she said. "During the past year, UF faculty and
students have helped position our program at the forefront of
interior design advocacy in the state of Florida."

Graham busy with research

Beinecke-Reeves Distinguished Professor Roy Eugene Graham,
FAIA, wrote a chapter in a new book, "Heritage Values in
Contemporary Society." The only architect working on the
project with numerous archaeologists, he wrote the chapter
entitled "Recycling Historic Towns to Protect Cultural Values
While Using These Values to Benefit the Community."

This was based on his research and work on World Heritage
cities in Europe and Canada. The collaboration with the other
scholars took place on Cumberland Island and Dublin, Ireland,
and was made up of members of the World Archeological
Congress.

Graham also has received a research grant from the St.
Augustine Research Foundation to conduct a study of the
Castillo de San Marcos in relation to the conception and building
of La Fortaleza and San Juan Historic Site in Puerto Rico. The
purpose of this project is to attempt to include the Castillo on the
World Heritage List nomination of the San Juan fortifications.

Published & Presented

Ph.D. architecture student, Matt Demers, will be a contributor
to a special issue of "Nexus Network Journal," with the
publication of his article, "Topology Catastrophe:
Catastrophe Narrativization of Urban Morphologies." The
journal is due out in June of 2010.

Other research related to his dissertation was previously
presented at the SPSU Annual Dean's Symposium on Le
Corbusier: Architecture, Urbanism and Theory, last February.
