UF's Citylab-Orlando partners with UCF to
benefit students, support city

With a Gator chomp from Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, the city
welcomed the University of Florida to downtown Orlando as the
program moves into the University of Central Florida Center for
Emerging Media.
"Partnering with our two landmark universities, it couldn't get much
better than this, could it?" Dyer said on Oct. 26 during a ceremony
and open house at the center celebrating the partnership between
UF and UCF.
The UF research and teaching center, Citylab-Orlando, an initiative
of the College of Design, Construction and Planning, joins other
programs at the UCF Center for Emerging Media, including the UCF
Florida Interactive Entertainment Academy, a graduate video-
gaming school, and other UCF programs.

BCN team wins competition

For the students on the Rinker School of Building Construction's
Commercial Management Team, the preparation for the ASC/
AGC Southeast Regional Competition in Jacksonville, Fla., began
months ago. Along with their preparation came a team with
great chemistry and a sense of confidence that they would
represent the university and the school to the best of their
ability. On October 30th, their vision was realized in the form of

a first-place finish at the competition.

The competition was formatted like a real-world Construction
Manager at-risk scenario in which each school attempted selling
their services for a proposed project to an owner. This included
preparing a written qualifications package to be submitted prior
to the competition, submitting a proposal and Guaranteed
Maximum Price at the competition, and lastly giving a 15-minute
oral presentation for the judges who acted as the owner.

Prior to the competition, the students spent several hours after
school every week preparing the qualifications package and
practicing their oral presentation skills. The team traveled to
Orlando to undergo training from their sponsors, Balfour Beatty
Construction Company. Balfour Beatty provided valuable insight
into how things are done in the business world, emphasizing
both written and oral communication skills and the ability to
market your team to the owner.

At the competition, teams were evaluated on their proposals,
professionalism, team cohesiveness and presentation skills. The
team worked hard into the early hours of the morning each
night on their product, and their hard work and teamwork paid
off.

The team would like to thank: the University of Florida, the
Rinker School of Building Construction, faculty adviser and
coach professor Michael Cook, Balfour Beatty Construction
Company as well as Associated Schools of Construction and
Barton Malow for sponsoring the event.

Anne Ray named new Florida Housing Data
Clearinghouse manager

Anne Ray was recently named the new Florida Housing Data
Clearinghouse manager in the Shimberg Center for Housing
Studies.

The Clearinghouse provides a single starting point for free,
publicly available housing data and related information for
Florida.

Ray has worked as a part-time consultant for the Clearinghouse
since 2001, and is very excited to oversee its continued
development and work on its many projects.

"We have exciting projects going along with the Florida Housing
Finance Corporation and the Florida Housing Coalition," Ray
said. "Our three organizations received a $1 million grant from
the MacArthur Foundation to promote the preservation of
affordable multifamily housing."

According to Ray, the Clearinghouse also performs a rental
market study for the state every three years, and will be
getting more involved in analyzing housing markets in various
neighborhoods.

"These are all projects I'm really excited to work with," Ray
said.

Ray succeeds William O'Dell as Clearinghouse manager, a
position he had held since the inception of the Clearinghouse in
2000. He is now the associate director of the Shimberg Center.

Ray, who received a master's degree from the University of
Illinois at Chicago in urban planning and policy, has significant
experience in the housing field. She has worked as a researcher
for various companies, among other things performing
feasibility and market studies and writing grant proposals.

She moved to Gainesville in 2001 with her husband, Norm
Levin; they have three daughters. She is looking forward to her
new appointment.

"It's a great opportunity," Ray said. "I'm very pleased to be in
this new position."

AICP, secretary of the Florida Department of
