This bibliography was compiled in preparation for a workshop on

"Small Farm Families and Public Policy," sponsored by the National Rural

Center, with the cooperation of the Farm Foundation, Ford Foundation,

U.S. Department of Agriculture, and others. It includes published

articles, unpublished dissertations, and research in progress, pertaining

to small farm characteristics and problems. The materials have been

arranged by general subject area: 1) structure of the farming sector; 2)

2) small farm production; 3) the small-scale farm operator and family;

and 4) agricultural policies affecting small-scale farmers relevant

research now in progress follow the published anu unpublished articles

listed in each section.

Most of the articles cited here were located through computer

searches of three data bases: AGRICOLA, Dissertation Abstracts, and

CRIS. AGRICOLA is a comprehensive computer-indexed system of published

works relating to agriculture, maintained by the National Agricultural

Library. Many of the articles covered by this search came from the

AGECON subfile of AGRICOLA, maintained by the American Agricultural

Economics Documentation Center. The search of this data base was

restricted to articles published in, or after, 1970, and yielded 303

relevant sources. A second search covered Dissertation Abstracts Inter-

national, for the years after 1968, and yielded 25 articles. The third

base used was the Current Research Information System, CRIS, which contains

descriptions of ongoing work at colleges and experiment stations

"i
- r r\

throughout the U.S. This search yielded 63 relevant projects. All

computer searches employed a list of selected key terms relating to small

farms, low income farms, and farm families. Computer-supplied material

was supplemented by manual searches of the Public Affairs Information

Service Bulletin (Vols. 61 and 62), and the Bibliography of Agriculture

(Vols. 38-41, No. 3), as well as bibliographies of important recent works

dealing with small farms. These supplementary searches yielded 63

additional articles, for a total of 454 sources. Articles focusing on

foreign agriculture have been deleted from this list.

This bibliography cannot claim total coverage of all works dealing

with small farms. But it does provide a strong base of material on

various aspects of the small farm situation in the U.S.

Call numbers are included in parentheses after each item cited.

Numbers beginning with letters are National Agricultural Library call

numbers. Those beginning with numerals are Library of Congress call

numbers (the NAL converted to this system in 1976). Each dissertation

entry includes a reference to the location of its abstract in Disserta-

tion Abstracts International. Current projects listed include the name

and zip code of the institution where research is being conducted. Most

of the published materials cited are available in the National Agricul-

tural Library. The following abbreviations of journal titles are used

throughout the bibliography:
