General information
Access
The Kalahari Gemsbok National Park is situated approxi-
mately 358 km from Upington in the far northern Cape
and 904 km from Johannesburg. There are two routes to
the park: one via Upington and the other via Kuruman,
Hotazel and Vanzylsrus. Since the gate at Mata Mata on
the Namibian border is closed, there is no access to and
from Namibia. Namibia can be entered via
Aroab/Rietfontein.
Climate
This is an arid region with an annual rainfall of 200 mm,
mainly between January and April. Day temperatures in
the summer may exceed 40'C. Winter days are sunny
with night temperatures often below zero.
Fauna and flora
The Kalahari Gemsbok National Park is the home of the
Kalahari lion, the gemsbok and the tsamma. The park is
characterized by its red sand dunes with sparse vegetation
and the dry riverbeds of the Nossob and Auob where
camelthorn, grey camelthorn, black thorn, raisin bush and
African blackwood predominate. Most of the animals
such as gemsbok, blue wildebeest, eland, springbok, red
hartebeest, duiker and steenbok live in the dry riverbeds.
Besides lion, other predators found here are leopard,
cheetah, spotted hyaena, brown hyaena, wild dog and
black-backed jackal. No fewer than 215 bird species have
been recorded here.
Arrivals and departures
Visitors may take occupation of their accommodation
from 12:00 on the day of arrival and are requested to
vacate before 09:00 on the day of departure.
Travelling times and distances

no travelling is allowed in the park after dark. When
moving from one resteamp to another visitors should start
before 12:00 to ensure that they arrive before dark.
