Abstract: |
Original identification: (Joseph Ewan) Liatris spicata (L.) Willd. vel aff. Re-determination by Kent Perkins (KP) or J. Richard Abbott (JRA): this is a species of Liatris (Asteraceae), probably L. tenuifolia Nutt. var. tenuifolia; it is definitely NOT the species guessed at by Ewan, as that species has sessile heads and non-mucronate phyllaries. despite their different appearances, both pieces here seem to be the same species once the minutiae are compared. the phyllary details match L. tenuifolia (and don't match any of the other species as well), but none of our specimens here at the FLAS herbarium have stems that are as regularly pubescent as these stems appear to be. perhaps what appears to be pubescence is just an artefact of the scanning? i would need to study the specimen directly for greater certainty. for now, the safest thing is just to confirm that it is a Liatris, probably L. tenuifolia. as suggested by Ewan, the leaves at the base of the stem to the left are NOT Liatris, and may well be from a species of Carphephorus (Asteraceae). |
