Abstract: |
Red-tailed hawks near Library West at the University of Florida:
Red-tailed hawks: Buteo jamaicensis (Order FALCONIFORMES - Family ACCIPITRIDAE - Subfamily Accipitrinae)
They generally weigh between 1-4lbs and can have a wingspan up to 4ft. The two hawks that sit in the tree near Library West are two+ years old as their tailfeathers are red and not brown. Red-tailed hawks also eat prey that is racoon-sized or smaller - and there are ample squirrels on the University of Florida campus who may be prey. These hawks may have a nest (or are building a nest) on top of the building somewhere above the western-most part of Library West's fifth floor. The Cornell Lab of Ornithology includes an audio file of the Red-tailed hawk's call: http://www.birds.cornell.edu/AllAboutBirds/audio/Red-tailed_Hawk.html |
