In 1951-52, Florida had 3 state universitiesthe University or Florida at
Gainesville, and Florida State University and Florida Agricultural and Mechanical
University at Tallahassee. 18,193 students were enrolled in the Fall ten of that
year.
Ten years later, we had a state institutions of higher learning, having added
the brand new University of South Florida at Tampa, which opened its doors in 1960.
Enrolled in the Fall of 1961-62 were 29,219 students in these four state universities,
an increase or 611 over the enrollment of ten years before. This w Fall over
30,600 individuals were enrolled. Included in this nunber were 227 medical students,
studying and working toward )1.D. Degrees at the J. Hillis Miller Health Center, a
new institution in itself, located at the University or Florida at Gainesville.

and equipaent at the University of South Florida, and we are still building there.
The Health Center required almost $17 nillion to construct and equip. These facilities
delight the eye of all Floridians win View them. They are sung the lost useful and
productive capital investments that man can make, but the building thereof is just
the beginning. The operation of the Health Center, with its Teaching Hospital and
b CollegesMedicine, Nursing, Pharmacy, and Health Related Services, requires an
appropriation of over $5 million each Ear from the General Revenue Fund of the State,
in addition to collections from patients in the hospital and fees tron students in
attendance. The University of South Florida takes its hth entering class next Fall
and will further expand the following year (1961.) to a total of well Over 5,000
students. Appropriations for its operation will exceed $5 million in that year.
These are Just two of the more dranatic of a mmher of advances in higher education
in Florida financed by your tax dollar and line. Our senior institutions, the
University of Florida and Florida State University, have developed graduate program-s
of major significance to us all in this increasingly couples: world. Florida A. & 1!.
University has truly become a university in this ten-year period, as signified by its
formal designation as Florida A. 8: M. University by our legislature, where it was
fomerly Florida A. a M. College. The faculties of all these institutions are
increasingly of top caliber, and the recruiting and continued employment of our
acadenic people has required the appropriation of larger suns for salaries as we
conpete with the great universities of the nation ibr the best brains we can find.
