JUNIOR COLLIGIS
More and lore of our young people today go on, or want to go on, from high
school to a higher education. where about 201 of the college age population in
Florida in 1952 was actually attending college, that percentage is approaching
30! today. Our junior colleges have taken much of this increasing proportion of
an increasing population.
1,164 students were enrolled in 5 Florida public junior colleges in 1951-52.
46.281 student. were studying in 25 such junior colleges in 1961-62, with 28,974
of then taking college level work. State appropriations for these locally-adainistered
institutions last year totaled alaost $15 nillion, actually $14,987,814, of which
$8,507,392 was for the building program and $6,680,622 for operations. Ian years ago
total state support for the junior colleges did not exceed $125,000.
This fabulous develop-eat, this remarkable provision, in such a short time, at
the needs of the people of Florida for education beyond the high school, has resulted
fro- close cooperation of our county school boards with the State Superindent of
Public Instruction and his staff, and fro- the wisdon of our Florida Legislature in
providing state financial support for the program. Our junior colleges are
receiving national attention, and deservedly so. But they do cost money and will
continue to require substantially greater suns, as we attempt to provide facilities,
classroous, teachers, at this level for the eany thousands of "war babies" who have
gone through our grade schools and are in our high schools now. In the next year or
two they will be graduating from high school and we will be confronted with these
great numbers of young adults seeking to continue their education and preparation for
more productive lives.
