This is an assemblage of people whose presence requires no
explanation --
Henry Flagler
Henry Plant
Governor Napoleon Bernard
Governor Andrew Jackson
There are many reasons which would Justify the presence of each cf
you
But your name is on the roster of the Council of 100 for only 2
reasons:
1. Your faith in Florida
2. YOur sense of responsibility broader than your own welfare

It may seem strange that in this day of omnipotent, omniscient

governments the head of a government should call upon a group
of private citizens for anything other than punishment or largess
Three basic political categories
Status quo
Utopia
Individualists -- government created for men, not men for government
Yen are in the last group -- in the conviction that you can have an
impace on the record of our times
I would hope that in the creed of the Council of 100 you will include
the belief:
I. That Florida is different
We are not hidebound
we are not cut from the same cloth

Nor by the same pattern

2. That we need not make the old mistakes
We do not have to be slaves to autos and other means of

transportation, as have other great states air age.
We do not have to destroy the public domain, sell our

beaches, despoil our rivers, waste our land
We do not have to build our schools and colleges as they
are built elsewhere, nor leave them vacant while children

are free to help with the harvest, nor use the techniques
of a small school in a day or mass education

3. That there is no "tide of history" about to carry us out to

some Communist sea

"Inevitables of destiny" -- Mussolini, Hitler

"We will bury you" -- the grave he digs is his own
"It matters not how straight the gate
How charged with punishment the soul

I am the master of my rate

I am the captain of my soul."

I hepe you will be inspired by the conviction that Florida can be and

must be the finest place in the world to live, work, raise
children, play, achieve
With clear air, that strikes the nostrils like perfume,
that carries the energy of the sun, not the germs of

disease or the stench of poverty

With industry that beautifies the land, with the magic of design
and landscaping

With schools that tease minds and excite ambitions

with a social philosOphy that recognizes that nothing is free
but the elements that God gave, and the Opportunities we share

because we are our Father's children

With cities where yards are large enough for lawns and streets
are wide enough for speed and safety and parks and pools
draw our children out or doors
With beaches and streams reserved for all
With forest lands dedicated to timber, conservation of water,
soil or recreation
These are dreams, but no greater than
A railroad from Miami to Key West
A bridge across the Tampa bay
The Ringling Museum
The vast telephone network -- radio and tv
The magic of a pocket radio
The concentration of citrus Juice
There is so much to do
Inland waterways to develop
An inter-American center to build
A young generation to train
Crime to fight
Libraries to stock
Industry to promote
Tourists to attract
Research to stimulate and finance
My conviction that government should create the climate -- this is
not even half the Job
Individuals must do the rest

There is nothing the mind of man can conceive which man cannot achieve
Chambers of Commerce -- promote business

Labor unions -- promote labor

PEA PTA -- promote education

This organization promotes Florida
A task big enough to challenge, an Opportunity vast enough to
excite Henry Flagler or Andrew Jackson or any member of

the Council of 100.
