INTRODUC TION 01

John '1'. Secretary of Commerce

The next speaker assumed his cabinet post after a career in law,
government and industry. He also happens to have emerged from
Harvard Law School in 1939. just one year after I left that institution.

l-lis government serviCe began in 1942 with his appointment as
General Counsel of the Office of Scientific Research and Development
under Dr. Vannevar Bush. In 1944 he went on active duty with the
Marine Corps, serving as an intelligence ofcer in the Pacific.

Returning in 1945 he resumed a career in the government and
soon became Special Assistant to Secretary of the Navy, James Forrestal.

In 1947 he joined Merck 8: Company as General Attorney. Eight
years later, after traveling through a number of key, executive posts.
he was elected President of the firm. That's where President Johnson
found him when he needed a Secretary of Commerce.

Elected to Phi Beta Kappa and other honor societies during his
years at school, John '1. Connor is a member of numerous professional
associations and a rec1pient of a Presidential Certificate of Merit for

his civilian service during World War II.
A distinguished career in industry and government combine to make
him a most successful Secretary of Commerce. I present to you my

colleague and friend, the Honorable John T. Connor, Secretary of

Commerce.
