Introduction of HUBERT H. HUMPHREY, Vice. President

It i:- no small thing at any time. under any circum'stances. to be a
Vice President of the United States. But to be a Vice President who
lollows in the footstepn of that great man who is now our President. and
to do so in a mannvr which brings even added distinction to that post. is
indeed an achievement satisfying to the most demanding of men.

The Vice President of the United States comes to his high post equipped
not only with native ability. but prepared by experience. His service as
Mayor 0! Minneapolis was so outstanding that it vaulted him into national
politics. His Senate career has been marked by the promotion of
progress'we legislation. the scope and significance of which has not been
exceeded.

There have been times in our history when the Vice Presidency of the
United States was a ceremonial post, but if that was ever so it has certainly
not been true since I961.

The two Vice Presidents who have occupied the office since that time
have given it a new dimension so that it is. in fact. the second most important
elective office in the United States.

One of the rewards that has come to me from working in Washington has
been the Opportunity it has given me to know better this great man.

It is 1th pride that I present to you now the Vice President of the

U nited States.

. . . Mr. Vice President.
