Baseball Dinner Notes:
Welcome to Florida not necessary since so many from baseball world
have made Florida their permanent home
Story of baseball and Florida one of long standing
came to Jacksonville
and many other teams
Since 1888 when WashingtOn Nationals
Boom opened state up as never before
made Florida their winter home
Over the years baseball training has given Florida an attraction
unequaled in the nation
Florida has given baseball in return appreciative audiences and fine
facilities
But changes occur, and just as the majors are expanding and as they
plan new facilities and new promotional devices so an air of unrest
seems to be brewing around the training camps
Recently had letter from too official of major league club training here
Invited me to visit
Said he would understand if I did not because the "political
Climate" was currently not good for baseball
Have written that man and have said to him what would say to all tonight
If you feel that Florida or Floridians are not giving you the
treatment you desire or feel you deserve, then tell us.
Florida is prOud of its reputatioo as basoball capital or the world in
the winter months
the major league teams here and we intend to do all
we intend to keep
teams which have strayed from our fold to
we can to bring back the
other states
a 7 y
We hone we to do this by open and aboveboard dealings...with0ut
threats of building or not building new stadiums or parking lots,
or without being threatened with the offers of other cities or
other areas
We are friends of long standing. Let us deal as Friends.
Let us open a new era of good feeling and of c00peration. We have much
to offer each other and have mutual interests too great to be injured
by petty desires
Our Development Commission is going to stress as never before the
importance of baseball to Florida...we are going to seek Sports
minded visitors as never before...And we are going to establish
channels of communication between the major and minor league teams
and the fine training locales in Florida such as we have never before
had .
Baseball we think, is for Florida.
And Florida, we Know, is for basebal .
