Dr. Walter Kalaf

Chairman. Board of hducation
Florida Conference

4444 Fifth Avenue North

St. Petersburg. Florida

Dear Dr. halal:

A few days ago. i hml the pleasure of a brief visit with our mutual good friend. muslin
E. Holiody. Diredtor of the drslcy Foundation. Tallahassee. i stopped in for a brief
visit the day before the student conference convened at Lecsburg. and had an opportunity
to review the plans that the director and your board are considering for the near
futurr for increasing not only the facilities of the Icsley Foundation at Tallahassee.
but lhr ministry that this Foundation may have in the near future for the Methodist
clientele in Florida. i also met with a snail group at the conference at which liar

we considered further the plans that were being considered. and i want to share my
enthusiasu for the plans that are now under way to increase the effectiveness of the
service of this Foumiation to that campus. 1 consider that these plans will have for
reaching effects for the future of the student body as the number of students increases
between how and 1970.

3 18" ivafs 390. l was privriegal to be on an evaluation cannittee that made a study
of the Foumiations in ilorida. l was quite impressed with what the president at
Tallahassee. Dean of S.udents. and others had to say about the effectiVeness of the
program at the Wesley Foundation. also. 1 was glad to get some insight into the
expected increase of students within the next few years. i remember the president's
saying that if the orthodists desired to be on the grounds where the students were.
they nreded to take into consideration the growth of the campus and the direction in
which the future facilities would be located.

I consider that the plan now under advisement has taken due consideration in the
suggestions of th- administration of the university. and if you see fit to decentralize
your plant. it will make possible the more effective use of an enlarged staff that will
be necessary when hvrhodist students of that campus will number 3.500. This ought to
be considered also. if you were to stay at your present site. which is a good one. you
would haVe to increase your staff personnel in order to measure up to the heavier
f5Ponsibilities that will be placed on that staff with the increased student body.

Ulher opportunities will be opened up for staff enlargement. such as an intern for

each year for a while. which is a pattern of work being adopted by a number of our
campuses at the present time. Seminaries are Very happy to work with the student moun-
mrnr and local Wesley Foundation in working out plans for those who will be future
leaders of our Foundations to get experience at the time they get their theological
training. 1'his plan has gonr far enough to convince our leadership that it its good
one and a plan that has been very profitable to engineering schools and others in the
past. and is how bringing considerable results to the church as they adopt this plan in
adoption with further study of its young ministers and directors.

This is a suggestion that is being accepted by other campus situations in the nation.
eVon though there is not a comparable one in the state of Florida. he have more than
our Foundation that has from three to five bases of operation working uminr the sun
board. Thai ts especially true with the larger universities. such as Ohio State and
others. i do UPIIFVF that the futre experience will warrant the plan of developing
all tho student work within a given coomunity under the leadership of our administra-
tive bourda Board of Directors.

i feel that some of lht suggestions that were made by the Survey Coalition soveral years
ago would still hare some value for the planning group at the present time.

i want to take this opportunity to express my very great appreciation for the kind of
work that Austin Holludy is doing and what the Student work Committee and the slain
dirrCtnr are doing in the state of Florida. I am convinced that their planning will

progran with principles and practices that have been tried and found successful. So i
prrdict Strong work in the future under the auspices of the Cowwissinn on Student Work
and lb: Board of Eduration. as well as the interconference Co-mission. in the state of
Florida.

opprecinting very much your leadership in this phase of higher education in the state
of Honda at this Hill". 1 tun
Very sincerely.
