Rev. Eilton Iyatt.
Executive Secretary
Board of Education
P. 0. Box 78
Lakeland. Florida
Dear Rev. Nyatt:
Rev. Austin E. Hollady has asked that I write you and express my feelings relative
to the need for a unit of the Wesley Foundation adjacent to our University family
housing areas. Family housing has only recently grown to any real size in this
University but the prospects are indicative of rapid future growth. we now have 288
families in Alumni Village with l85 additional units to be ready by the Fall. To
keep abreast of our needs for the future. we will need 4l5 additional family housing
units in 1963. and an additional 300 units per biennium for the indefinite future.
Effectively. this means that we now hare a small coo-unity of married students that
will probably expand rapidly into a large city of the same. Physical accommodations
for these people can be adequately met through our building program. but my limited
experience in family housing leads me to believe that it will be considerable more
difficult to offer them assistance in the area of Ioral direction and spiritual growth.
I do not know whether the individual family problems are greater or less than those of
a typical community. but they do exist, and i feel that a branch of the Neslcy Founda-
tion conveniently located to the families, could be of great assistance in offering
them guidance and help.
i think there is an excellent opportunity for our Church to make a real contribu-
tion in the lives of our married students. and hope that we can develop some sort of
program to better enable us to meet this mushrooming challenge.
i personally feel a strong need for us to reach these families somehou and tell
them that Christian living is the only foundatiOn for a successful marriage. I
believe that the proposed branch of the Foundation might be the best means of accom-
plishing this.
Thank you for your consideration in this matter.
Sincerely.
