The Honorable Farris Bryant
Director of Emergency Planning
Washington, D. C.
Dear Governor Bryant:
As i mentioned to you before, the American Correctional Association is holding
its 97th Congress of Correction at the Americana Hotel the week of August 20,
and we are trying to make this the best Congress ever.
We Would still like for you to make every effort to arrange to have President
Johnson speak at the congress on Tuesday evening if it is at all possible. i
realize that it is impossible to engage him this far in advance and am wonder
ing it you could schedule Ramsey Clark to he. the speaker on this occasion with
the understanding that if President Johnson could attend at the last moment that
he would withdraw in favor of President Johnson.
I am sure no one knows better than you the emphasis being placed on crime and
corrections these days by the President as well as many others, including the
Governor of Florida, and since we will have between 1, 500 to 2, 000 registrants
at this congress it would appear to be a golden opportunity to get the President's
message to correctional personnel throughout the country.
Would you please contact the Attorney General and see it' you can schedule him
to appear in Miami Beach on Tuesday, August 22, for the Joint Meeting to be
held at 8:00 p.m.
I am sure you realize that if the President would consent to speak to us and
cannot make the Tuesday evening meeting that we can arrange our schedule to
hear him at any time day or night between Monday, August 21, and Thursday,
August 24, 1967.
I am sure you too would like for us to have the congress held in Florida turn
out to be the best one ever held and will assist us in any way you can to get an
outstanding speaker for this occasion. If it is impossible, also, for the Attorney
General to schedule time to speak to us, we would very much appreciate
