Dear Governor:

From most points of the compass Alaska is a remote and distant
land, thousands of miles removed from the well traveled paths of
world tourism.

While Alaska is a long way from the main line, the jet transport
has brought its wild beauty, scenic wonders, and broad realm of
adventure into the convenient reach of every American and of
travelers from other lands in search of new experiences.

The Federal Government is investing 34. 600.000 in the Alaska
Purchase Centennial. Alaskans are making a special effort to
win a larger share of the growing volume of world tourism, and
we are helping.

While we are employing various means of focusing attention on
Alaska, the most novel approach will be through the worldwide
syndicated feature MARK TRAIL. In a plan worked out with
Senator E. L. Bartlett of Alaska and cartoonist Ed Dodd, the
legendary outdoorsman will bring the great attractions of Alaska
to more than 98, 000, 000 people in this country and Canada and
to millions more in foreign lands.

It might interest you to note how this promotion is being launched
in major newspapers throughout the United States and the world.
We hope it will divert to Alaska tourist dollars that otherwise
would be spent abroad.

Sincerely,

. /
