Mr. Ralph E. Page, Dean
College of Arts and Sciences
University of Florida
Gainesville, Florida

Dear Dean Page:

I appreciate so very much the active interest which you are
showing in the proposal which I made for the employment of the
tremendous intellectual facilities of the University in behalf
of the State Legislature and its work. The trouble to which you
went in considering this matter is a tribute to the University.

After further considering the subJeot of our conversation it
seemed to me best to revise some of the tentative conclusions we

reached in this particular: 30 as not to require two members or
the faculty full time beginning in January, 1953.

As I have discussed this with various people in whom I have
confidence tne one objection which is constantly cropping up,
largely from a political viewpoint, has been the possible mis-
understanding on the part of the Legislature and the public of
the need for or wisdom of taking two valued professors off of the
start or the University, and two from the F.S.U. staff, without
specific legislative approval, and before the committee system
will have been set up to properly utilize their services. I
would therefore like to propose that the two men to which you
referred, J. E. Dovell and wylie Kilpstrick, be not relieved

of their University duties for this purpose at the first or the

year.

After the committees nave been determined, formulated their
problems and begun seeking solutions of them, it may well be
that they will want to call on your staff on s more or less
