EDUCATIONAL TELEVISION IN FLORIDA
AP!" N. 1952 The Federal Communications Commission released
its Sixth Report and Order in which the allocation
of television channels titraoghout the country was
announced. The order included 9 channels reserved
for non-commercial, eduaationol use in Florida.
July 1, 1952 Lindsay Hopkins Vocational School (under the Dada
County Board of Public Instruction) filed with the
Federal Communications Commission for a constmc-
tion permit for an educational television station in
Miami .
October 1, I952 Steering Committee of the Southern Regional Pmlect
on Educational T.V. met in Atlanta. Florida was
represented.
October 22, l952 The budgets for the Florida University System were
presented to the Finance Committee of the Board of
Control at a meeting in Jacksonville. Members of
the Education Committee of the Legislative Council
attended the matings.
December 11-13, i952 The Southern Regional Conference on Educational
Television was held in Atlanta. The conference was
the culmination of the Southern Regional Education
Boards T.V. Proiect. Conference was attended by
sixteen Florida representatives of educational inter-
ests.
January 29, I953 The Board of Control was asked by the University of
Florida to approve a resolution encouraging the
University to apply for a permit to construct and
operate an educational television station in Gaines-
ville. The resolution was adopted.
January, 1953 The University budgets were presented at a joint meet-
ing of the Budget Commission and the appropriation
committees of the 1953 Session.

The Florida Governors Conference on Educational
Television was held at Gainesville under the leader-
ship of the University of Florida and the Florida
Extemion Division.
The Board of Control was coined by the University
of Florida to approve the creation of a school of
cmicatiom at the University. The purposes
of the school were listed as (i) the training of
students ior rst level positions in iaurnalian, rodio,
and television, (2) the operation oi laboratories in
these fields, and (3) the operation of a radio and
television program prediction center to serve the
entire State. The Board qaproved.
The Bead of Control passed a resolution encoumging
Florida State University to apply for a chmnel for
educational television in Tallahmee.
The 1953 Session of the Legislature convened.
The University of Honda led its application For
a permit to construct a station for non-commercial
educational television at Gainesville. The oppliccr
tion to the F.C.C. contained the explanation that
the proiect would utilize a part of the iacilitlel being
provided in part by salary savings by remodeling the
Florida Stadium, and that the 1953-54 operating
budget would probath contain provision for construc-
tion and operation of the proiect, or 'os a last resort",
it was explained, salary saving from the 515,000,000
annual budget would permit a start on educational tv.
A bill calling for a survey of educational television
by the Florida Legislative Council was introduced in
the House.
Some was introduced in the Senate.
The period during which the Federal Communications
Commission refused to consider applications to tenni-
nate reservation of channels for educational use expired.

The 1953 Session of the Legislature odioumed,
having enacted into law the bill calling for a
television survey.
The Legislative Council met in Talldsassee, and a
committee to consider erhscational television in
Florida was appointed.
The second Southern Regional Proiect in Television
was organized with a director appointed to the staff
of the Southern Regional Education Board. Governor
McCarty appointed the vice-president of the Univer
sity of Florida to a committee in charge of the proiect.
The Educational Television Conmittee of the Legis-
lative Council met for organization purposes and to
outline the educational tv.
The beholden in Dade County failed to cpprove the
operation of an educational television station solely
by the Bead at Public instruction.
The Eduoational Television Committee of the Legis-
lative Council met in Jacksonville. The chairman
issued a policy statement.
The Federal Commutications Comm ssian granted a
construction permit for on educational television
station in Miami to the Lindsay Hopkins Vocational
School.
Educational TV, inc. a nonprofit corporation, filed
an application with the F.C.C. for a construction
permit for on educational television station in Jackson-
ville.
The University af Florida held a conference attended
by representatives from Tampa, St. Petersburg, Jackson-
ville, and Gainesville. A committee was appointed
to produce a film on Florida and educational television
as well as to work toward statewide coordination of
educational television programming resources.

The Board of Control considered the matter: of
edicational television at the University of Florida.
The Board of Control qapainted a committee to advise
the University of Florida on the matter of educational
television.
The Joint Committee for Educational Television
reports that the University of Florida has withdrawn
the Gainesville application, hoping to rut-submit it
when financial plans are more complete.
