STAMNT BY GOVERNOR COLLINS -DECE0!BER 21, 1955
One or the biggest mistakes we have made in recent
years in Florida was when the 1953 Legislature cut the full length
turnpike down to the bobtail size.
To complete theturnpike now will cost us 10 to 15
million dollars/gag: if the whole project had been approved in
1953 because of higher interest rates, added right of way
costs, etc.
But even so, I believe it would be a serious mistake
to consider abandoning the full length 3 project. This state
is going to need all the highways we can build in the next 15
years In using to the limits our State resources, the Federal
Interstate and other funds, and what we can borrow for sound
and feasible toll projects. It should always be kept in mind
that under the new Federal program annual allocations will be made
over a 13 year period. Our most pressing needs now are for urban
expressways and we should concentrate our efforts for these over
the next several years under the interstate program. As I see
it, there will be no conflict whatevepbetween the interstate
system and the full length turnpike. In fact, one will supplement
the other to give a more complete network of limited access highways.
A high federal road official told me just the other day that he
was firmly of this opinion and agreed that we should go on with our
turnpike plans just as soon as our additional bonds could be
properly marketed.
