Honorable C. Farris Bryant

Ocala, Florida
Dear Mr. Bryant:
Sorry you were unable to be present at the meeting of
the Waterway Improvement Committee of the Jacksonville
Chamber of Cemmerce last Thursday. They had a pretty good
meeting with Colonel Robinson from the Division Engineers'
Office and Colonel Pearson from the District Engineers' Office.
They tried to concert ways and means to garner appropriations
to start the Cross-Florida Barge Canal. As I recall the meeting
they proposed to contact the Office of Defense Transportation under
the Secretary of Defense to get a ruling that the Cross-Florida
Barge Canal is essential to national defense. If they can get this
statement they then propose to move, with the full support of the
District and Division Engineers, for the inclusion of a proper
item in the next year's Federal Budget. More on this when I
see you but it was an interesting and, I think, effective move on
behalf of this project.
John Beachman's successor in the State Senate. R. O.
Morrow, wrote me asking a number of very pertinent questions,
among them being a request for data on the Cross-Florida Barge
Canal. The inclosed is a copy of the material I sent him on this
particular project.
I know that the Central and Southern Florida Flood Control
District is much concerned to assist in the early initiation and
completion of the Cross-Florida Barge Canal. The Governing
Board of that District is only too aware of the great c00peration
given it by the other portions of the State and is eager to reciprocate.

judging by his news releases and editorial comments. I think
we will find Senator Morrow from Palm Beach County also aware
of this necessity for cooperation and unity of purpose.
Cordially yours,
x F. ,
