18 January 1951

Honorable C. Farris Bryant
M & C Bank Building
Ocala, Florida

Dear Mr. Bryant:

Some time ago this office examined the authorized Cross-
Florida Barge Canal plans, together with all available information
on the origin, direction of flow and elevations of ground waters in
Florida. We have again reviewed these materials, and find our
original conclusion to have been sound.

In View of some misunderstanding of this matter, I hope
that you can give that conclusion wide circulation:

It is my professional opinion that the cond ruction and
operation of a Cross-Florida Barge Canal with locks in the location
and to the specifications now authorized by Congress, will have no
harmful affect on the ground water supplies anywhere in Florida.

We find that Dr. Herman Gunter, the State Geologist, is
also of this opinion, and he has been asked to furnish you a state-
ment.
