Representative Farris Bryant
Deals, Florida

Dear Mr. Bryant:

The classroom teachers or Polk County are gravely coop
corned about the recommendations of the Legislative
Council at its recent meeting in Jacksonville relative

to the increase in teachers' salaries for the coming
year: $100 for Rank I, $200 for Bank II, and $350 for

The Board of Directors or the Polk County Classroom
Teachers Association, meeting in Lakeland, January 20,
1953, and representing nearly one thousand classrooa
teachers, voted unanimously the writing or this letter
to inform you that we are opposed to any salary increase
that does not offer the same percentage increase or the
same dollar increase for the first three ranks.

The legislative program for education proposed by the
teachers' organisation, the Florida Education Association,

voices the thinking and desires of the teachers or Polk
County and Florida. The $560 increase for teachers in
the first three ranks is needed to attract to and retain
in the classrooms or Florida sell-qualified teachers.
The request for this across-the ~bosrd increase is based
on the 22% rise in the cost or living as determined by
the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

The teachers or Polk County disapprove heartily or the
use or pressure by a hired lobbyist to achieve school
legislation. We wish our legislative needs to be voiced

by the Florida Education Association, and we expect the

program of school legislation as proposed by the Florida
Education Association to serve as a guide to our legis-

lators in formulating and passing such legislation.
a. trust that this information will be of Value to you.

Very sincerely yours.

Virginia Killer
President
