April 15. 1955
Representative Farris Bryant
House of Representatives
Tallahassee. Florida
Dear Hr. Bryant:
Thank you very much for acknowledgement of my letter of
April 6, in regard to teacher's training in the universities.
My personal background has. I guess. no more particular
standing than that of a taxpayer or any ordinary citizen.
I am 26 years old, a resident of Tampa for the past 22 years.
a veteran of WW II. and have been a student in journalism at
PSU for tnrse years and for a brief period at the U. of Fla.
Long illnesses in the family have kept me away from school
since leaving after my 0 I Bill ended and I have not yet taken
a degree. I am interested in owning a weekly newspaper but
have iust recently ioined the Monticello News and will be here
for an indefinite period. My father is business manager of
the Olen-mills Studio in Pensacola. My mother died over a
year ago of cancer at our heme in Tampa.
I am in the field of Journalism which I intend to make
my career but I have had a long-standing interest in education--
an interest first awakened while in my innior year at F30.
Though most of my studies of education have been centered on
the liberal college.I have increasengly become aware of the
failings in our teacher's training program. I cannot speak with
authority--mine would perhaps be considered a lay interest
insofar as this implies unprofessional study. And before
attempting to write upon the program I would first like a more
thorough grounding in all facts relating to it. However.
there are enough at hand. I believe. to warrant a serious
public interest and, hence. a legislative interest concerning
fundamental features of the program.
As I had mentioned, I have had friends. men and women.
who were more than a little discouraged with the requirements
for teaching in Florida schools. Iy mother. who was born in
Florida. had been a school teacher for fifteen years thou
in out-of-state schools. In later years she had substitu ed
in Tampa schools and would have taught regularly. I believe,
had it not been for such rigorous. unnecessary requirements
for a teaching certificate.
I thank you for t§:king interest in my comments and do
hope your council meets with success and encouragement for
further study into this matter.
Yours Sincerely.
Gene 1. Purnett
