MEMORANDUM

Re: Channel 10 Farris Em Telecast Sunday, May 8. 1960

1. Prior to next joint meeting, Bryant should pick a weak point in
Carlton's background and go on the attack before Carlton puts him on
the defensiva.

2. A solution must be found to switch Carlton off of a filibuster on
a particular subject. This might be accomplished by Bryant stating,
after Carlton has made an obviously political remark, "now that you
have finished your political speech on this topic, lets talk about roads".

3. Obviously, Carlton intends to knock Bryant for having attended
Harvard. The next time this occurs, Bryant should acknowledge that
he is pround to have worked his way through Harvard and the University
of Florida.

4. Next time Bryant brings up his trip to Virginia to seek out a solution
of the segregation problem and better prepare himself to be Governor. he
should be sure and inform the audience that this trip was at his own expense.

5. Bryant's overall appearance is much better than Carlton's, and the
first 15 minutes of the above show he was undoubtedly the best that I have
ever seen him on TV as to facial expression, demeanor. etc. I think he
should capitalize on the fact that he looks more like a govennor, possibly.
where appropriate, with statements such as "All Florida can be proud to
have me represent them no matter where I might be".

6. 80% of the discussion on this program went over the heads of the
average viewing audience. This ties in with the fact that Bryant must be
able to wrestle the offensive away from Carlton. It should be fairly ob-

vious that Carlton will be primed on one particular subject and attempt to
filibuster the whole program.

7. Bryant should come back with a strong reply every time Carlton
accuses him of half-truths. If Carlton is permitted to expound this all

over the state without rebuttal, he will convince some people that he is

accurate.

7. Bryant brought up the turnpike question contrary to the
advice of two surveys. both of which showed that the great majority
of people in Dade County do not even consider the turnpike as a real
issue in this campaign.

8. Neither Bryant's nor Carlton's explanation on the turnpike t
was effective, and this time could have been used to much better '
advantage .

9. Bryant brought up the matter of Hialeah and Tropical Park
Racetrack lobbyists supporting Carlton. yet did not get the points over [4 v v
too well and was not very effective in this regard.

to. Bryant should have turned the program into an offensive one
by him against the two local newspapers. bringing out forcefully how _
they are distorting the news and attempting to make this a sectional k L"

Having been through {our campaigns myself as a candidate. three
of which were real tough ones I believe I know the problems you are
confronted with at this stage of the campaign. I know what is going on
inside of your system. and I think I know what is going on inside of
Julia's system because of reactions I have personally experienced with
my own wife. Clotile. in our rough campaigns.

There are only two weeks remaining and you cannot afford to

Mr. Farris Bryant Page Three May 9. 1960

waste your mind and time from now until Election Day on anything but

thinking and preparing yourself properly for televisiOn programs and

speeches to large audiences You have to be protected from your

friends and well -wishers As an example just yesterday in the Tampa tp.-
Terrace Hotel where no one was present except personal friends of 51)
yours. I noticed that several just had to buttonhole you and talk to you

personally when you were trying to get away from the meeting to catch
the plane .

I feel very strongly that in addition to those traveling with you
now, each of whom has specific duties. that you need two or three well
qualified men. who are politically wise. from whom you should take
continuing advice You cannot continue to be harassed by your friends

and do the job in public and through mass media for which you are so
well prepared and qualified .

1 thin): that Julia needs several women with strong personalitiesL L... k l 4-
traveling with her at all times and affording her the same protectionuj, .. 4%

You no doubt have already thought of everything I have suggested,
however. I do hope you will put some of these thoughts into effect.

Sincerely .
