aono- 7,
Mr. Robert G. Venn
Dupont Plaza Center
Miami 32, Florida
Dear Bob:
Thank you for your letter.
I appreciate your letter and have read it
carefully.
As you were writing the letter, we were
recommending Doyle E. Carlton, Jr. to our
readers. This recommendation had come
after talking to the more serious candi-
dates, including Faris Bryant, and after
a lengthy examination of the public records
and private lives.
I think that I made it clear in the re-
commendation to our readers that Mr. Bryant
knows more about government than any man in
the race. I have known Faris longer than
you have. We have visited often and I have
a respect for his ability.
I am concernea that he galloped out with
this lnterposition argument a few years
back and that he assaulted the United States
Supreme Court in television oratory in re-
cent days. It is my opinion that his assault
was a vulgar deed.
I do not question your intentions and I never
have. It may sound strange, but I do not
question the integrity of Faris Bryant. I
do question his Judgment in this area of
civil rights and I believe that civil rights
are going to be so large an issue in the
life of our next governor that it is going
to flavor his entire administration.
I want to add one more thing. It would
be much easier to say let's stay segre-
gated for a while and then one day we
will start helping the Negro, and other
minority groups, to register to vote, to
get a better schoolhouse for his children,
to begin his development as a member of
society and abandon his status as a
second-class citizen. Moreover, there
is a question of law. I intend to advo-
cate a society of laws and I have tried
to think what I would have done in the
late years of the 19th century when the
court held that equal but separate facil-
ities were legal. I would have abided
by that law, but I would have done as a
citizen what I could to rally discussion
and argument to modify or change the
ruling by the court by those provisions
which are plain in our constitutional
processes. It is interesting to note
many people today say that the 1954 de-
cision of the court was influenced by
the popular sentiment of people in the
north. You may find it interesting to
go back to the court's ruling in the
18905. It was influenced by the same
sentiment.
This is a personal letter. I Just felt
compelled to reply to the many comments
in your letter to me.
Sincerely,
h;
