LCOISLAIIVI RIVERENCE BUREAU

March 28, 1960 ,

Honorable Farris Bryant
M & C Bank Building
Ocala, Florida

Dear Farris:

Hr. Garwood (7) of your staff called today asking the
amount of 4 cent gas tax money that is spent on main-
tenance and administration. I told him the accounts and
reports of the State Road Department do not furnish a
precise answer to this and I referred him to Mr.

Hubert Helton, the comptroller of the SRD.

The 5RD Report shows that primary maintenance in 1957-58
was $14,786,888. As you know, the 2 cont surplus can

be used only for construction. The salaries paid by the
SRD during the calendar year of 1959 were $22,895,696,
and the travel expense of employees came to $940,619.
The Comptroller's Report for 1959, page 202. shows that
the SRD paid about $24,000,000 in salaries and adminis-
trative expense and some $140,000,000 in construction
and maintenance expenee. Also, I enclose two pages of

figures sent to the Bureau of Public Roads by the SRD.
All this is unsatisfactory, but good data on roads is

hard to get.

Best regards.
