Mr. Randolph C. Tucker. Jr.
P. 0. Box 563
Ucala. Florida

Dear 'Ranny':

i am in receipt of your letter of January In of this year. to-
gether with the subsequent invitation to attend the Young Democrats for
Bryant confab in Ocala last Sunday. My sincere apologies for my laclc of
communication to this date. Your telephone call today has prodded me in~

to a decision which i hoped i would not have to make.

it is with deep regret that ldecline your invitation to head
the Young Democrats organization for indian River. St. Lucie and Martin
Counties. and i do so in the best interest of Farris. Thanh l have lived
in Florida all of my pre-college days. i have been absent from the state
for the past ten years returning only this past September. Because of
this I find myself in the awkward position of nut even being able to offer
Farris my own vote in accordance with the voting restrictions. My family
has been active in politics for the past thirty years in Florida. in Volusia.
Sarasota and Brevard Counties. and thus my influence does not extend into
the three counties to which l have been assigned. Nonetheless my vigorous
support for Farris would lead me to carry the colors to the McCarty
stronghold were it not for one other factor.

I was admitted to the Tennessee Bar two years ago and last
year attended a year of post-graduate tax work before coming to Florida
without being a member of the Florida Bar. Looking forward to my antici-
pated admission to the Florida Bar as a result of the coming examination
in late March. i feel the responsibility to my family and to this firm.
which has afforded me the opportunity to return to Florida. to concentrate
my efforts during the cructal months of February and March toward an
adjustment and familarization with the Florida laws. The increased work
burden of the tax season and the acquisition oi rights at way for U. S.
Highway No. l and an additional county road leaves me virtually no time

as it is for this purpose.

The three counties in this area are on a lamilar first name
basis with the McCartys and the one assigned to this group must have

ample time to substantially combat this influence. 1 am available to do what
i can in this county to channel information and/or solicit stpport among the
various young democrats as the campaign progresses. Rest assured that my
support for Farris is undaunted and the same effort that i am able to give as
a section-head l will give independently without the responsibility. i am
convinced of his integrity, his qualifications and his election and he will not
fail from my lack of support or any influence which I am able to give. My
desire to actively assume this responsibility at the risk oi failing my family
and this firm is the cause of my belated response and i hope that this delay
has not jeopardized your organization.

Thanking you (or your consideration. I am

Most sincerely yours,

CQAQW Herring
