I think the candidate should make a talk of about 15 minutes duration
Class A time, preferably on Monday or Euesday reiterating his belief in
conItitutional government and his abhorrence of the Communists, (ellow
travelers and other historical methods of confusing and destroying by
dividing and conquering.
Th%as been going on in the capitol city of our State
whereby a mixture of white students from Florida State University and
Negro students from A I: M University on a mass basis have conducted
sitcin demonstrations trespassing on the property of others and interferring
with reputable business establishments in the operation of their businesses
have embarrassed our State nationally and is causing considerable trouble
at home. lt was a small percentage of each school that participated, and l
hasten to pay tribute to the students of both universities who either refused
to participate or ignored the entire matter.
The right to work and own, use and control private property is one
of the most sacred rights under our form of governmenL....lt is generally
admitted that these and other businesses have a lawful right to control their
prOperty, but in the usual fashion at one of our strong international enemies
these wicked people seek to destroy that right. The disgraceful spectacle
0! white college students arm and arm with Negro students and moving
in deance of the law oi the State government which provides and supports
the various schools which offers them an education is indeed difficult to
understand. One may ask what can a governor do about such citizens.
I say to you that strong and well executive leadership could have stapped
these performances immediately. For those 0! you who may not have had
an opportunity to study the problem, the public universities in Florida
are operated under wt policies made by the State Board oi Control, a
group of persons appointed by and directly responsible to the Governor. He
can at his will direct his own Board of Control affecting the policies at the
universities involvui.
It seems to be a matter oi common knowledge that these wicked
performances were spawned, matured and developed on the campuses of
Florida State University and A b M University (or Negroes. lt doesnt
seem to be any secret that the has been building up (or sometime on
these campuses, but i know oi nothing that our present chief executive
did to discourage or control it. Bu} he could have by a mere phone call to his

own Board 0! Control. Since he could have but did not, we must ask ourselves
the logical question, did he really want to prevent it?
In his 30 minute diatribe in Jacksonville last Sunday he showed no
evidence of wanting to prevent it, but denounced as immoral all of the reputable
business establishments in Florida who are not willing to accept his plan
{or immediate integration.............lor a chief executive who has had the support
of the people to denounce as immoral in one...sll of the peeple who believed
in the traditional separation of the races. The general interpretation of his
speech was that he was calling for immediate race mixing in defiance of
our customs and traditions. It is true he had but s little...
but l hold in my hand an editorial appearing in the Florida Times Union
of Jacksonville, one of Florida's oldest and most reputable newspapers,
and in their lead to the story you may see what they said "Governor says
Mix or Else."
It is now expected and understood that the chief executive has a
candidate in this race who he would naturally expect to carry on his plan {or
race mixing. All of you know it is not Bryant.
It is my firm belief! that the sentiments in favor of race mixing
expressed by our present governor does not represent the sentiments of
the pe0ple of this State. I believe the majority of both races, white and
Negro prefer the original segregated w of life which we enjoyed prior to
the present leadership.
businessmen
And so it is that we find theta-imam oi our state have been
WW denounced as immoral by their governor because they refused
to accept integration and race mixing. lt thereiore becomes of
paramount importance that the peoPle of Florida in the present campaign
elect a governor who believes in the sovereignty of the State and who will
mm resist with all of his power and influence the inroads of the
"South haters" from the North, the Communists, fellow travelers, race
mixers and others who seek to destroy our way of life, and who will get
our universities out of the race mixing business and back into the business
of education.
My stand on this matter is well understood.
