UNIVERSITY or FLORIDA

Dear Farris:

I read with interest your statement that Florida needs a
study of the problems or urban-strip city develop-ant. I should
like to congratulate you on your foresight in emphasizing the
importance or this problem. Since you referred to the University
or Florida in your address, it occurred to as tint you would like
to have information on the work we are doing in this area.

The Public Administration Clearing Service, a branch of the
Department of Political Science, received a $15,600 grant for the
study oi city-anger cities in Florida. This study is now in
progress, under the direction or Dr. Gladys M. Ksmercr. Because
the problem or outlying area development around established cities
is cannon to other states, the Southern Public Administration Research
Council, or which we are a somber, is applying for a grant to carry on
additional research among Southern universities.

Different members of the Deprtment of Political Science have
also carried out individml studies. I refer particularly to Dr.

Manning J. muer's work on city charters and Dr. J. E. Dovell's research
on the problem of annexation. The Bureau of Business and Economic
Research has studied. certain parts of the problems or public finance.
Dr. 3. R. Bartley has done significant work on problems or planning and

In sun-nary, we have information which bears on the problem you
hsve outlinedl Further research with additional resources would be
necessary to consider the entire problem, but it is one on which there
already is work that would be usenil.

Certainly we shall be happy to assist in any way possible.

Sincerely yours,

J. w e Reitz

The Honorable C. Farris Bryant
Governor-Nominee
