Honorable Farris Bryant
Governor

Ocala, Florida
Personal

Dear Farris:

At the outset, let me say that when you and the state cabinet
officers came to the airport and the Hellenic Center, 1 had
every intention to be in the parade, had accepted in fact, but

was in bed at home about the time you were parading from
the airport to the Hellenic Center. The long hours and the

strain apparently brought on some terrific headaches. For

the first time I tool: several Empirin tablets the eyestrain
was terrific.

i wish you could see the Corvette of the Sheldon family. It
still has the Bryant stickers on the front and back that were
placed there long before the first Primary and the big placard
is still on the pick-up truck body ITS TIME FOR BRYANT.

Farris, it you don't think i was embarrassed at the speaking
at the Court House for Senator Lyndon Johnson. I stood up on
the platform in the hot sum for an hour and a half and enter-
tained the crowd and kept the people coming and kept them
from leaving, I am enclosing a copy of Dick Lee, the Official
Court Reporter's letter, that will give you some idea of what

took place.

The embarrassment came about when someone yelled out of

the crowd, "Governor Carlton is here, call him to the platform"
and rather than appear biased, i did. or course, he took the
platform. 1 had to shake hands with him and he and his son,
Elmer Ward, and his son's father-in-law, Hoyt Woodbnry, and

a hundred and one other Baptists plagued me to support Doyle
Carlton, Jr. I told them I was sorry, that 1 supported you when
you lost and i was supporting you through and through.

Hororable Farris Bryant October 27, 1960

Onala, Florida Page 2.

Doyal Carlton took the microphone and said that he was a
Democrat 100% year in and year out and that he felt like the
little boy that dropped his bubblegum in the chicken house.

Farris, i am enclosing herewith some worthwhile data on one

i believe to be the outstanding City and Regional Planner in

this State with experience and qualications that are probably

not matched by any man his age. He has been a life long

loyal Democrat and he is anxious to become engaged in the

Gulf Coast Area of Florida. Undoubtedly, the State Road Depart-
ment or the Expressway Division or one of the numerous
Bureaus or Commissions under Governor Farris Bryant will
have reason to acquire these, that 1 consider to be exceptional
services. Will you see thatthis enclosure is placed in the

proper file for the proper consideration.

it is important that i call your attention to the fact that County
Commissioner Elbert Moore, of Hillsborough County, going \
out of office who was defeated by Nick Nuccio, Phil OHara and
some of his friends have repeatedly requested of me to call a

special meeting of the Democratic Executive Committee. They
believe there will be a vacancy created between now and election

day and they don't want to trust you with the appointment.

Farris, Cathryn and l have discussed this pro and con and
frankly, we feel that you should be trusted with the appointment,
if any. and you will have my wholehearted support and the Sheldon
family and our friends. These people who did not give you active
support that you deserved in the Primary can't expect to get

any rewards this late from iriends of yours like the undersigned.

Trust this finds you and the family well, with kind regards,
