J. R. 'Iommy' Tomlinson, Vernon Strickland tmd Baal Kingrey
were interviewed. After talking with them it was not considered
necessary to pursue the matter with others. It is obvious to me
the less said now the better.
Kingrey admitted giving the first story to the pper but said
he had not given any others since that time. Max Brew:- oulled him
following the first sto and cussed him out he said. The second
story come from one o! t e Bryant supporters, not Iingrey, and Kingrey
has called him on the carpet for melting the statements. Kingrey
wanted to get a public retraction but my advice was for him to accept
the private retraction and not cmtinus the argument in the paper.
Kingrey agreed to this procedure and told me he would not give out
any 0th r stories.
I advised Xingrey to remain quiet until after the November
election. Keep his organization intact and ready for action. He
was told that when he and his organization was needed he would hear
from Bryant or hie spokesman. Xingrey is standing by to carry out
your wishes.
The court house poblem is a local one. Stacy Rogers is vi tally
interested in the project. It seems to be a one-man emsdde on his
pal-t. I did not talk with him for after talking with the others I
thought it might be better for Bryant to talk with him. Rogers has
rssigxed publicly from the Bryant advisory committee and attached is
a letter of resignation. However, his resigiation does not remate
him from the voters minds as being active for B. ant. As I understand
it era is going all out to fight what they as the "second street
crowd This ms is for hes the co t house where t s It
is similar ingnstgre to what gigantic! inuiallahassee with mistion to
relocating the mansion.
There seems to be seven men or means who control Fat Pierce.H They
are: John McCarty, George Stanley who owns timnoe companies in Lenn
thud Carlton and attorney and cousin of Doyle, mks darren who is in
the laundry business, David Putnam who owns consddemhle been property,
ind hurl hills an attorney and spokesman for the seven. Only six are

McCarty scene to want the court house rebuilt where it ie for
he one property adjacent to it end it would enhance the wluecr hie
property .
Rogere ie Sighung McCarty and the rest and vante the court houee
moved. Personal! I agree with Bag re. A trip over the overpaee to
the court house i1 convince anyone, I believe, that it ehculd be
moved and thue remove a bottleneck. However, this is a local tight
end Bryant should stay out of it.
It night be well for Bryunt to cull Rog-we and it pceeible, get
him of! the fight.
Kelly home who we 0. rlton'e cadmign Manager has now changed
to the Republican candidate for Governor and in hie District Manager
for that area.
This situation is one you whould watch. It would not be well to
have this kind or development occur it it becomes Wideenead. Many
Republicans regietered as Democrats and voted for Bryant. Many will
continue to vote for Bryant. They ehould be cold on the idea it ie
better to vote for e u. lified candidate then follow the party line.
Syd Herlong has the same d. motion in hie district.
iingrey has a great deal or respect for Bryant and in loyal to
him. He is not interested in personal gain, according to his etetemnt.
He doee went Bryant to be a good governor of when he can he need.
He 10 icelly pointed out that the votee that came to Bryant did not
come rem the "uecond etreet crowd but from the people cuteide that
area.
he said there are some 27 membere of the Bryant group. They are
intact and will rennin so if it ie Bryant's wish. Kingrey ie the
bend.
Vernon atricklend, McCarty'e traveling hugger, corroborates thie.
Strickland, or course, ie new with Bryant.
I oelidve if B t will guide thie group thinge will work out
satisfactory. Jhe-t d muddled part or the situation is the newcomers
trying to wreet the pow-=r from the originel Bryant group. It Bryant
wishes to keep the situation etutue quo he ehould let it be known
Kingsy ie to rennin at the top. It not, then let it be known or let
it continue to voreen.

mike warren seems to be. causing some of the meet. Be (2119
Kingrey and Strickland and tells them he use Just talked with Bryant
and etc. They are at a loss to understand why warren is tel with
Bryant so much and wondering if it is something they should be 01113
that Bryant has not talked with then.
Kingrey feels that damn is Joining up now. at first he didnat
feel there was much friendship but now feels that warren is warming up.
I have known Duke derren for many years. Attended high school
with his. He is a fine nan mt has never been noted for having much
diplomacy or being able to work with finesse. he usually puts his
foot in his Inuuth without intending to do so. His purpose is god,
but his approach blunt.
The Fort Pierce Tribune is owned b G rdner Coulee, owner of
Look magazine. John Harrison is the ed tor. Harrison, Kingrsy and
Strikklend believe, is s Bryant son but has to take orders from above.
ynnt might do 4 selling job on Harrison the next time he is in
rt Pierce.
It is my considered Judgment that there willnot be any more
publicity in the m costing from Kingrsy. However, Doug Silvers
is seemingly trying to continue publicity on Bryant. He my come
up with other stories.
My euggeution isthe: this phase of the problem be forgotten and
keep it out or the press it possible. Stacy Rogers is the only one
who may continue to males as problem. His outlook 891,0an to be one or
s ienstic, coupled with his dislike of HoOart and the "second street
crowd." Practienlly all the lgwyers in Fort erce lem toward leaping
the court house where it is. Their clients seem to influence their
thinking.
So much for this.
Tommy Tomlinscn runs a restaurant. Be is an engineer by profession.
He who a member of the North Carolina State Highway Commission. During
the war he was engaged in airport construction for the government.
He appears to know much about highway construction. Heresre some
or his observations on where improvements can be mode and money saved.
1. Shake up the entire rend depaxtmeht.
2. Check out the top prsonnel in the eld to find it they are
working or spending their time outing and m drinking ct bore. His

personal observations gained from running his revtaurant and bar is
that much time is wasted at his place when they should be working.
3. Cement based roads in his area wouldoost less due to the
fact that limerock costs three times asmud: due to freight rates.
4. Insist thatspeoifioations are met. Cited the rebuilding of
the :11: turnpike as due to the fact that they allowed low grade
limsrock to be used when it shouldn't.
5. Consider appointing an advisory board to recommend to Governor
how roads should be built. Appoint men who would be unbiased and
do what is best, not political beat.
6. Consider eliminatin the duplication of inspection services
on restaurants and bars. Be ieve one inspector could do all the work,
rather than two or three coming by to do the job.
7. Require more stringent health reguirements for all people
handling food. Employees should be required to undergo blood, X-Bay,
stool specimen, T. B. and others. Says present requirement is a force.
Also feels these requirements should apply to all food handlers, even
to events tugs: staged by fraternal, civic and other organizations.
8. Beverage Department should rework rules on paying for whiskey.
Says wholesalers have 30 days to gay distiller, but rettiler has only
10 days to pay wholesaler. Oonsi are this unrsir, especially in his
area where whiskey is delivered once a week.
Mr. Tomlineon says he has much more suggestions to make. I spent
some three house with him. Bill Horria may ind it profitable to
Call on him the nevt time he is in the area.
