Mayhe you hold the euro impreeeion that we do concerning the
candidntee for Governor. There are I? in all. Ten entered in the
Democratic primary Hey lrd and two entered in the ncpuhlican primary.

Meet observers concede there are air candidates in eerioue
contention Doyle Carlton, Jr., Farris Bryant, John McCarty,

Fred Diokeneon, Hayden Horne and Ted David.

We have the impression that these men are flitting ehnut the
State talking to Wamep'e Globe and freternel meetings hut not saying
too much except they are for motherhood, the American ring and a good
five-cent cigar.

ut the nit120n confronted wilh the selection of a men to nutCeed
the able Leroy Collune In a hit concerned.

All the candidates are Intelligent men; they have hackgrounde
suited for holding political office hut they have not been nhle
on a group to project Vigorouely to the nuhlic where they stand
on the hi; issues confronting the next CnVernnr of Fioride.

Most people eeem to he sizing on the men at this tine on the heels
of good ooke or had looks or on the heel! of vibrant or dull epenkipg
ebilitiea. It may well he that a good political candidate muet he
nhle to play nolitine and any thing! which will offend neither
north or sooth P1oridn or the hi2 counties or the smell counti-e
hut we are Rtlll waiting for these men to stand up and he caunted.

What theee men intend to do ahout reapnortionnent atill neeme clouded.
And the ieeue of race relations is faring no hotter.

Toke Covarnor Colline' forthright, candid and coorngeoue speech
of lent Qundey.

only one candidate gave outright eupnnrt to Colline' statement
that if department etoree open their doore to Negroes. they should

open them in every regard.

numn nnwmx murmur. mer an, 1960

Ted David agreed.

Burns said the speech made no contribution toward solving the
problem but he has no alternate solution.

Bryant ducked making a comment saying his position on segregation
is wellknowna
-n;d i exec ad Governor he would not tolnrate any

McCarty

sitdown new: =trnt10ni at lunch counters.

Dicxenson rejetted Collins moral condemnation of lunch counter
demonstrations.

Carlton naid lip service to the desire of anyone to improve his
comnumity standing, but he condemned the demonstrations es 'sgitstion
which precipitates disorder and violence.

Whether you agree with Collins or not, you have to admit that
he came forward with a suggested solution to the present tensions
raised over the demonstrations.

What we would suggest to the men who are seeking to succeed
Collins is that they in a similar wey give us their solutions
to this and the other problems which lie ahead no netter h0w

cnntrovsrliul they may he.
