FARRIS BRYANT FOR GOVERNOR
State Headquarters
Ooala, Fla.
For Release wednesday A. M. March 7
ocana, Mar.6, -~Governorship candidate Farris Bryant today released
his plank on taxation which proposed to "meet the threat of new taxes"
by instituting economy measures and holding appropriations down. He
pledged to fight additional consumer taxes.
Bryant released the final planks in his lB-plank platform, including
those on citrus, agriculture and livestock; sectionalism; states
rights; and public health.
"Taxes don't Just happent They are caused--by appropriations,
waste and graft," Bryant's taxation plank said. "To meet the threat
of new taxes as your Governor I will:
"1. Eliminate graft
"2. Bold waste to the irreducible minimum.
"3. Strive to hold appropriations at the level required by the
legitimate needs and demands of the people.
"4. Fight the imposition of additional taxes on the consumer,
who now bears 86 per cent or the tax load of the state.
"5. Reorganize the tax collection process so that from existing
taxes more revenue can be derived at less cost to the state."
Bryant promised to promote quality and marketing--"the keys
to an ever-expanding agricultural economy--" for the citrus,
agricultural and live stock industries."
"As your Governor I will:
"1. Work aggressively to cooperate with the citrus grower, the
farmer and the cattlsman, both through research and through logic-
lation, to make the name or Florida synonymous with quality.

"2. Carry on the fight against agricultural diseases, particu-
larly spreading decline and tick infestation, and work out a plan for
the compensation of those whose property is confiscated in the right
for the general good.
"3. Use the facilities of the Development Commission, and soap-
erate with all agricultural groups, to promote larger and better
markets for Florida products.u
Bryant vowed to give the people of Florida confidence "that right,
and not political might, is the basis upon which governmental decisions
are made."
"Sectionalism is born or rear and misunderstanding," he said. It
nill disappear when the people of all Florida have this confidence.
Be pledged to fight for States' Rights. "That government is
best which is closest to the people," Bryant said. "Just as I believe
in home rule for cities and counties, so also do I believe in States'
Rights. Just as I fought for States' Rights in the National Democratic
Convention or 1952, so also will I fight for them as governor of
Florida."
In 1952 Bryant was chairman of the Florida delegation at the
Chicago convention, where he vigorously supported Sen. Richard Russell
for the nomination.
In his final plank, public health, Bryant advocated that "the
reduction of communicable diseases, the development or county health
departments, the expansien of facilities for the treatment of cancer,
diabetes, and mental illness, and improved standards for nursing
homes for the aged be aggressively sought."
