Honorable Farris Bryant - __
P. O. Box 1773
Ocala. Florida

Dear Farris:

First of all. let me congratulate you upon your magnificent showing
in the First Primary. In view of so much talented opposition. I
think that the vote indicates a tremendous victory.

This morning. One of the chief representatives of the marine dealers
in this area. Mr. Sid Gefen. who owns the Duval Marine Stores in
Jacksonville, and who also has an outdoor sign advertising business.
called to see if you would be interested in using the barge which
Haydon Burns used to get advertising in his campaign. I have dis-
cussed all of this with Dave Foerster. and I am sure that he will be
in touch with you. but basically the l. 033 marine dealers in Florida.
and the 220.000 registered boat owners. believe that the tax on boats
is oppressive and unfair. They are very anxious to know whether or
not Farris Bryant will advocate exempting boats from the personal
property tax, or having boats qualied as motor vehicles so as to
come within the present exemption. or in some manner advocating
appropriate measure to relieve this situation.

This barge is presently in Miami and could be immediately changed
over from a "Burns" to a "Farris Bryant" barge, and be sent to
wherever most needed in the State of Florida. The barge is owned

by a Mr. Coppedge who rented the boat to the Burns Headquarters

for $300. 00 per month. The marine dealers and others of Jacksonville
donated all of the equipment. etc. to put it in its present form and

will continue to donate this equipment in the future. Mr. Alex Brest.
of Jacksonville. donated the tug which the Coast Guard insisted accom-
pany the barge on its trips throughout the state. The crew was partly
voluntary and partly hired by the Burns Headquarters. The gasoline
which was used was in effect. donated.

Honorable Farris Bryant Page 2 May 4. 1960

Mr. Sid Gefen also has a weekly column which runs in the sport page
of Florida Times Union. and he muld make.mention of you and of
your stand in each issue. In addition. the marine dealers who sup-
ported Burns because of his stand on this tax. posted appropriate

notices of this fact and his campaign literature in their respective
stores.

lam most anxious for you to meet Mr. Geten during one of your
visits to Jacksonville, for he is an extremely hard working campaigner
and will undoubtedly be able to secure many votes {or you among his

friends. In addition. Mr. Gefen is very well thought of among the
Jewish members of this community.

With kindest personal regards, I remain.

Very ruly yours,

Lawre Fay .
