Mr. Farris Bryant
508 iilvor gprinue Blvd.
Ocala. Florida

Dear Farris:

it goes without saying that we are particularly and cenuinely
happy over your overwhelming victory; 1, along with the rest

of the Parker family qgggggtulate you on your election as our
next Governor (I do no lieve the Republicans can muster
enough strength to up-set you in the November election). It
was especially sweet because of the vindictive manner in which
too opposition waged the battle and the depths they stooped in
tieir vain effort to uain victory. An you stated. more than
once in your campaign. it was not necessary to win this can-
paign but it was necessary and eesEETTElTnt it be conducted
in such a manner that you could look back without remorse and
without regret on what was done and what was said during the
course of the campninn. I believe you certainly conducted your-
self that way and can certainly look backward and feel tiat you
conducted n clean. vigorous campuinn.

is you well know, the press in this area. at least. fabricated
issues "phantom issues that were never present. Tngninn

you as a "school closer", sectional candidate", and "pork
chopper" were typical. No one was ever able to substantiate

how these names were given to you; just that they were readinq
them in the paper. We did what we could to disoel and disprove
but it is always difficult to argue with the paper, nd as an
aftermath in talking with some of my mic-hard friends who were
for the opposition. it would appear that they began to believe
this propaganda. And partii'h'fter Kilian! Caldwell came
out with his stronn "NAACP3~r e t after the election. they seem-
ed to think that you had followed the course as he would advo-
cate it. For some reason they seemed to think that Millard
Caldwell was your right hand adviser. I did what l could to
dispel this idea and the influence that Millard Caldwell or any-

one, was going to dictate the policies that you were going to
follow as Governor.

i give you this background to say that though you have won a
tremendous victory there is ahead of you a much ureater and much
more challenging job. That job is to be the best Governor
Florida has ever had in these next four years! I say this to

Ir. Farris Bryant -2- May 31, 1980

you regardless of whether you have any further political aspira-
tions or not. I know you are launching forth in this tremendous
job with that attitude and I have assured those who have appre-
hensions as to the kind of Governor you will make that the proof
of the pudding is the eating and that you are fully capable of
being the best Governor this State has ever had and I telt
confident in my own heart that you would put forth your finest
effort to carry Florida forward. This. I an confident, you will
accomplish. Needless to say. that if in my small way if I an
able to help and assist you in any way. please do not hesitate
to call on me at any time and any where. I am seeking nothing
in this; I have sought nothing in my support of you because I
felt you were the nan for the job; and I was convinced of that
and therefore would do what I could to see that you were elected.
You have received many opinions as to what occurred hero in Dade
County I an sure. but it all boils down to the fact that you
have a tremendous Job in winning the people in this section of
the Rtate who were opposing you in this election. I know you can
do this by competent and efficient administration as Governor.
Appointment in this area, of course, will be one of the big fac-
tors in Judging you as Governor. You, of course, know the impor-
tance of that and will give the most careful consideration to
your appointments in this area particularly.

As your friend of long standing I know you will accept these
comments in the spirit in which they are given, for I would not
be so presumptuous as to attempt to tell you how to run your job.

When you are down this way again I would appreciate a chance for
a brief word with you and, of course. to personally congratulate

you on this tremendous victory you have achieved. Give my host
to Julia and the tanily. l have written Julia a short letter,
telling her what a fine Job she did in the campaign and how well
suited she is to be our finest FIRST LADY.

iincerely.
