ENROUTE WITH FLORIDA F8 R RELEASE AFTER
EgggiggTIC CANDIDATES SEVEN P. M. OCTOBER 24, 1960

Tampa Governor-nominee Farris Bryant has pledged a 'tOp-to-
bottom reorganization of the Florida State Road De artnent" to
restore the much criticized agency 'to a position n which it can
command the respect and confidence of the people of Florida.

Bryant released a statement on the road situation as he and
seven other state Democratic nominees stepped off at Tampa on a
two da 'Aircade' tour of Florida. The Goals attorney said revela-
tions y a Le islative investigating committee of improper conduct
on the part o Read Department supervisory engineers and contractors
in several areas of the state emp asized his campai n statement
'that the greatent weakness in our highway program s the adminis-
trative structure of the Road Department.

Bryant said he will establish lines of authority and a workable
chain of command within the Department to provide closer supervision
of work programs and employee activity at all levels. He said
audits of the Department are not made often enough. He pledged that
under his administration audits will be made as quickly as possible
and as often as necessary to enable us to review the wisdom of
decisions made and of contracts let. Br ant said his road board
will work closely with city and county of icials in the planning
of highway programs.

The nominee said he holds no illusion he will solve all road
problems, but promised to rebuild the Department to a position of
respect and to "combine the most capable minds with the hinhest
purpose to achieve the best roads in the areas of greatest need.
