Dec. 3. 1960

Iron: John Ema, Mei-tent to the Governor

we have received a 1mm: inquiriea tron paper- and radio-TV
stations on the subject of whether Grunt Ir. Bryant will take hie oath
of office at midnight on January 2.!" u: this point we have made
no cement, but the inquiriee have become eutcieot to call for a

response .

Mr. Bryant will be guided in determining the time or time of

taking an oath by what he believes to be the beat inteteet of the

state government and his mini-cat).
M to etatmente that a midnight oath-taking would make a

'aham' of the public inaugural cerexmny, hr. Bryant hae thie mutt
'nuch more is involved here than a public spectacle at 7-1- Jh noon
on inaugural day. Service to the state in ite highest office in
a matter of daily dedication to the principlee eet forth in the
words of the oath. A governor must have two ml! consummate:
an inner conniunent beet deecribedvjto thine own aelf be true.
and a public connitment in which hie friende and all citizens
Join with all of the pump and circunetance dictated by tradition
and custom. I don't think it in poaaible to take the oath too
many timeeit would. perhape be a good thing if thou holding
office of public truat were to daily repeat their oath of
office aloud an an audible rehinder of their obligatione to

the people of the istate. An oath in in a real eenee a prayer.
