M LNI .iiLANUJM:
The Miami Herald Editorial of May 10th again plugs Carltm.
referring to these matters:
1. A heavy prize isat me. it is the govcmship ota
state sectionally divided and apprehensive at its future. On the turn-
pike, Larlton and Bryant tend to cancel one another out on this one.
for neither by the record was a rst triend o! the big road. This is
editorial misrepresentation. '11! record clearly shows that Bryant voted
for the turnpike. The record clearly shows that Carlton voted against the
turnpike.
2. ()n special interests, they say. "me issue cmoems the
taxing or non-taxmg of enractive inatstries which have been enloying s
free ride at the taxpayers' expense. Mr. Bryant is in no apparent haste
to correct this imbalance. .mor vcariton wants to do so. i Judge they
refer here to the question of severance tax. The legislative record shows
that the House has passed many hills constituting a severance tax but that
the enate has always killed them in committee. in me 01 the sessions i
believe 1957 or i959. senator Larltm was on the Senate Finance and Taxa-
tion Committee which killed the severance tax bills.
3. They refer to segregation and say: "Both candidates are tor
it but their approaches ditfer. Mr. Bryant nds it extremely difficult to
wish away his demonstrated tmdness for 'iraarpoaition. a doctrine oi
nullication. Mr. Carlton is a moderate who vould not der the law but
would keep the races separated as far as possible. Actually. wlton
has vacillsteo on this subyect. i no not know where he really permily
stands. I do know that his county campaign pulsations have published
his tic-called replies to Collins' stand on the lunch counter situations,
which seem to me to he very favorable to him. lhavs the definite im-
pressim that they are using this method to play both sides 0! the street
at the same time. The, are keeping Farris at! balance by shouting inter-
position. which nobody understands. Actually. Carlton's matements
about what interposition did to Virginia are [scarred as shown by the
court decision in Virginia. The court did rater to the interposition am
other resolutions but then it stated. "'Iheae resolutions are not determine-
tive of the issues in these cases. The decision goes on to recite that
hp 2 my [0. 1960
the reaam Virginia's pupil aaalpment law was declared unconatittaioml
in the (act that Virginias general appropriation hill prohibited the expen-
diture of public had- in any public achool that members or both races
attended. 'Jbvioualy. titan. pupil ssaignment could never be ethane.
lpersonally valid like to get 011 9eng and interpoaitla. but I do
nu think Carlton Will lat ua. Consider should be given to statewide
local ads directed to the local situation a this lenie.
4. The Herald editorial neat states that the m isms are
horth Florida against outh Florida or. to state it anather way.
ntraliem va. urbanlsm. citing Bryant's streth comes (ran the rural
areas. tven as small In intiian liver county. to do not iii. to he told
we are rural. although compart-c to La we are. They further recue
that. 0th Florida Will find itself gixing for its political llle before
the campaign is over. Haida itself has been urban in population since
1930 and urban-minded in tit main elm l950. I! this is going to be a
light for power in which Ill population centers recognize a champion.
it is atmndantly clear trom the We 'go' that their champion is not Mr.
Bryant. Here. again. they are inconainent in their own mamas.
They started or! mmtha ago saying the gold coast had a minority oi the
voters of the state. When i wrote them a letter aaitlng them to prove it
by citing the registered democratic wars in the counties wnich they say
constitutes the gold coaat. john McDannott aaid counting bah republican
and ticmocrata. it con-tinned about --third 0! the voters and eliminating
republicans. somewhere armnd 22,- .
5. Although the Herald does not give it. the radio news this
morning gives the nal atatc taala (or the candidates for governor as
follows.
til the taai of 937.067 vuaa. Bryant is leading anth a
total 01193.50? over Lariton With a taal of 186. 288.
or 7.219 vaaa more for Bryant.
Carlton was. to me. completely on at character on his Channel
10 joint debate. He was mean. my, rude. and calling Bryant such things
as race halter. mar o! the half tr'utha. etc. lam convlnad tint he is
rehearaed to take the dbnaive to try to get Br) to lone his temper and
to prevent carlton being queuimed on any sub,ea except thoac a: which
he has been rehearaed. ome methou should be devised to knock him off
balance and to get him of! hia rehearsed schethue.
