BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH

Doyle E. Conner

Commissioner of Agriculture-Elect

Doyle E. Conner. Democratic nominee and Commissioner
of Agriculture-elect, was born Dec. 17. 1928. in Starke.

He took over the family farm in Bradford County while
still in school at the age of 12.

in 1950. at 21. while Conner was a sophomore at the Uni-
versity of Florida, he was elected to the House of Represent-
atives. He was elected to two terms while at the University.
where he was graduated in 1952 with a B. 5. degree in agri-
culture.

At 26. Conner was unanimously elected as Speaker of the
House to become the youngest Speaker in history.

He was selected by the Outdoor Writers of America as
one of the Nation's Outstanding Youth: of 1947. He was named
the Outstanding Farmer of Bradford County in 1959. one of
Florida's Outstanding Young Men in 1950 by the Florida Junior
Chamber of Commerce and one of the Most Valuable Members
0! the Legislature in 1959.

Conner received the Allen Morris award for legislative

service in 1957.

Conner has introduced legislation (or the reorganization
of the Department of Agriculture. providing a gas tax refund
{or farmers. appropriations for research and eradication of
the screworm. prieon reiorms. establishment of the Med-
ical School at Gainesviile. eetabllehmcnt of the Northeast
Florida Mental Hospital. slum clearance and regulation of
mieleading advertising.

He also introduced legislation to protect churches. syn-
agoges and schools against bombing and the public against
homh hoax telephone calls.

Conner is a member of the Baptist Church. Elks. Masons.
Shrine. Chamber of Commerce. Farm Bureau. Florida Cattle-
rnen'e Aesociation and W. O. W. He is a past president of

the Jaycees and former member of the Florida National Guard.

Conner is married and hurt two children.
