when these cards have been completed to include the address they should
be sorted by Blocks (Sections), and the Block (Section) designation put
in the upper left hand corner.
PIECINCT MEETING After the voters cards have been arranged by blocks,
a meeting of the Block Workers should be called at Precinct Headquarters.
They should be coached in canvassing and the voters cards for their
blocks should be given them.
CAHVASSINC Canvassing is not difficult -- in fact, when you get used
to it, it is fun. You meet so many nice people. The following should
be used as a guide:
1. When your knock or ring is answered SMILE. After all you are
there to make friends.
2. Give your oane and state your business briefly. soeething like
this, "How do you do. l'o Mary Doe, your Republican Block Worker for
this part of the 163rd Precinct, and one of your neighbors. (whether
you are or not. you both probably live in the same county). I should
like to talk to you about our candidates.
3. Distribute literature. Ask, 'Do you need any help to get to the
polls on election day? If transportation or baby sitter is needed make
note on the card. Ask it there are any questions they would like to
ask about the candidates. Talk a little about the candidates yourself.
A. Size up the voter. Try to figure out how he will vote. Very
often you will be told.
5. Leave promptly. immediately after leaving and before you call
at the neat house, mark the voters card with a RED pencil in big letters
either 5, g, g or 2.
CODE "A" Voter will go to the polls and vote for all the Republican
candidates without urging or assistance.
3" Voter will vote (or all the Republican candidates but will
need prodding or assistance to get him to the polls.
"c" Doubtlul or splitoticket voter. Needs more convincing.

UNRBGISTERED During canvassing unreaistered potential voters will be
discovered. Put down the names. addresses and date they will become
eligible. Turn in to Precinct Headquarters.
ABSENTEE BALLOT VOTER ii a water announces that he will be absent or
if the bone is obviously eqpty, try to find out Itere he will be and
make note on the Voters Card of his address Idle absent. This Is very
important. Elections have been Inn by absentee ballots in Sarasota
County. (l952 and l956).
This information should be turned in to Precinct Headquarters at least
one month before the election. A letter is sent to the absentee voter
enclosing literature and the following post card addressed to the Super-
visor of Registration:
Dear Mr. Brown:
Please send me an application for
an absentee ballot for the
election on
My 333:... while absent is as shown
below, and I reside in the Precinct
in Dede County.

Address
This syte- has produced some remarkable results. It has never failed
to get 90 per cent of the voters to whom the letters are addressed, and
in one case two voters voted while visiting Hong Kong, China.
Al;entee hallots may also he used in a like manner by those voters
who physically are unable to go to the polls.
ELECTION TEAMS There are three electiOn teams:
I The Telephone Team;
2. The Transportation and Roby-Sittinb Team.
3. The Poll Watchers Teen.
0n the do before the slction the members of the Telephone Team
are given parts of the purged voters list to call up all voters and,
remind them, "This is your Republican Precinct Headquarters. You are
reminded that tomorrow is Election Day and we need your vote. Will you
need transportation or other help in getting to the polls?" Makes
appointment for any transpprtation needed and notifies the Precinct
Captain.
On Election Day the first relief of the P011 Watchers Team arrives
at the polls at 7:00 A.M. They should have a capy of the voters list
(with phone numbers), a folding chair, a clip board, a scratch pad and
several sharpened pencils. They should have a "Poll Whtchers Authority",
which will be furnished by the County Republican Executive Committee.
A Poll Watcher can be anywhere in the polling place so long as he does
not interfere with the election. The best place is near the exit. He
should check off the list of names of all voters who have voted. At
2:00 P.M., the Precinct Captain collects the list and gives a fresh list
to the Poll Watcher.
When these lists are obtained frOm the Poll Watchers at 2:00 P.M..
they are broken down and turned over to the Telephone Team members, who
proceed to call up all voters who have gas voted. This is a suggested
conversation, "This is yonr Republican Precinct headquarters. Our records
show that you have not voted yet. Do you need transportation or other
assistance to get to the polls? Will you please go to the polls and vote
as soon as possible, as your vote is badly needed?
Whenever transportation.is needed, two people should always go in the
car in case one is needed for babysitting.
At the close of the polls at 7:00 P.M., both the Precinct Captains
should be present and observe the count of the vote. They should then
report to the County Executive Committee at Republican Headquarters the
results of the vote.
You, the political workers of the Republicans, if you are informed
about the candidates and the issues. will soon be regarded as political
leaders by your friends and neighbors. You will often be asked, "How
do I vote? The best answer is, I wouldn't think of telling you how
to vote. Then you may add, But, I don't mind telling you how I am
going to vote. Naturally, you are going to vote a straight Republican
Ticket.
Let's all pull together for VICTORY AT THE POLLS.
