Senator DOYL8 E. CARLTON, JR.. candidate for Governor, lived in the
Governor's Mansion aa a child. when hia father. Doyle 8. Carlton, Sr. served
the State of Florida in that capacity from 1929 to 1933.
Doyle, Jr. waa born in Tanpa on the Fourth of July, l922. The moat
noteworthy event during hia elementary achool yeara occurred when he vaa ll
years old. It vaa then that he met a achooluate in the sixth grade who caught
his eye immediately. She vaa blonde Hildred Hoodbery, the young lady that
Doyle waa to court iron that day on, until they were narried in 1943.
Doyle started to dietinguieh hinaeli as a leader early in hia achool
career when he was elected Preaident of the Student Body of Hoodrov Hilaon
Junior High School in Taupe. he also received the American Legion Medal ea
the school's outatanding graduate.

Prom Junior High School, Doyle went on to Plent High School, eleo in
Tempe. where he cepteined the basketball teen and wee honored by being selected
President of the Student Body. In the tell of l9h0. he entered the University
of Florida to uejor in Business Aduinietretion. At the University, he vee
elected captain of the basketball teen.
The ver interrupted Doyle'e college cereer in his junior year when he
enlisted in the Air Corpe Reserve in l9h2. He was celled to native duty in
Merch, l9h3, end served for 32 nonthe. He left the service at the were end
with the reek of Sergeent.
In the fell of 1965, the young Ceritone decided to move to Wenchule.

In 1952, Doyle Cerlton. Jr. decided to enter public service. He would
seek e seet in the Stete Senate, just so his fsther hsd done successfully in
1915. And thus he was to continue e history of public service by the
Cerltons thet extended beck through five generetions. In the 1850's, his

Doyle 2. Carlton, Jr. won the 27th Senatorial District race in the first
primary. He was sent to the State Senate to represent the people of Hardee.
Highlands. DeSoto and Glades Counties. In 1956, Doyle returned to the Senate
when he was nominated to that office by all four counties --- without opposition.
iron the very outset of his senatorial service. Doyle established himself
as a senator whose legislative policies and actions were designed for the
entire State of florida rather than for a particular county or section. In
recognition of this high principled approach. after his first session. Doyle
Carlton, Jr. wee naned Outstanding Freshnan Senator by a vote of his colleagues
in the Allen Harris Award Poll. He was also named as one of the States four
outstanding senators by the press.
In each of the four legislative terms which he has served, Doyle has
received recognition for outstanding service. In 1955. he was honored by the
press as one of the Senate's two most outstanding numbers. In the sane year,
he was nened as hardee County's Outstanding Young Man by the Hardee County
Junior Chamber of Commerce. In the Jaycee's State Convention at Ocals that
sane year, that group named him as one of Ilorida's five Outstanding Young
Hen of 1955. In the 1957 legislative session. Doyle was named Vice-Chairman
of the Legislative Council, an interim legislative study group. That year,

the press again voted him one of the two most outstanding senators.
Bis four sessions in the Senate saw Doyle emerge as one of the outspoken
leaders in the fight for the rights of the state's more populated counties.
Doyle's colleagues. in l959, selected hin as one of two most outstanding
legislators in both houses of the legislature. He was also named in 1959
as "Most Valuable Senator" in the St. Petersburg Times poll of the rlorida press.
Doyle Carlton, Jr.s legislative record has been distinguished by his
application of sound business principles to the matters of Operation of State
government. He has been a leading advocate of economy. yet his leadership
has not been pointed in the direction of false economy. He has led the tight
for sound expansion of state services and for improvement in administration of
state expenditures.
Doyle is s Baptist. In his church --- as in his legislative post ---
he has chosen active service over were participation. He was recently
elected First Vice-President of the Florida Baptist Convention. He has served
as Chairman of the Board of Deacons of the First Baptist Church of Hauchula;
teacher of an intermediate Boy's Sunday School Class for the last 12 years;
member of the Ixecutive Committee of the Florida Baptist Children's Home at
Lekeland and State Brotherhood Delegate to the Southern Baptist Convention.

of Commerce. Be is an ardent hunter and fisherman, two diversions that he shares
with close friends in all sections of the state.
Doyle 2. Carlton. Jr. is an outdoor man of strength and vigor. He stands
62" tall and carries his 190 muscular pounds with the agility and grace of a
trained athlete. Re walks with an easy, long-legged stride --- a stride that
his many supporters believe will carry him to the Governor's Mansion in
Tallahassee in 1960.
