DOYLE E.

4- CANDIDATE FDR GOVERNOR

May 16, 1960

Mr. Duncan Thigpen, Manager
Sumter Electric Cooperative, Inc.
Sumterville, Florida

Dear Mr 'I'higpen:

Ivon Tilyou has given me a little down the river for not making my position
clear with respect to the REA cooperatives. It is purely an oversight,
probably since my connection with the farmers. citrus growers and csttlemen.
I thought. was pretty well known and to me our rural economy is wrapped up
quite intimately to the programs which you people haVe been conducting.

I truly feel that the REA program has done a tremendous amount of good for
the Florida farmers. I don't belieVe that any program could be put before it
in its accomplishments. I have been a member of Ivou's cooperative since its
beginning and came very near to being a member of his board about eight years
ago. I was not on the ballot, but write-ins nearly put me to work.

Rest assured, Mr. Thigpcn, that I shall never do anything in public life which
will endanger the lot of our Florida farmers and to endanger these cooperatives
would be a serious blow to their economy. I believe all thinking people in our
Florida government should take the position and carry it out that supporting

your programs is one and the same thing as supporting the programs of the
Florida {annex-s.

I would certainly appreciate any help that you can give me to take me to the
governors chair where I may wield a good influence in your service.

Sincerely.

Doyle E. Carlton, Jr.
